This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preparing students for the 21st century learning standards has become paramount. Calls for reform in education and an emphasis on college and career readiness in the 21st century have been prescribed as key to providing proper instruction. The implementation of these skills often require changes to the traditional high school schedule. One solution that has regained popularity is the creation of block scheduling. There has been an abundance of research conducted on the advantages and disadvantages of block scheduling, however little research has been conducted as to whether or not alternative scheduling has an effect on students once they attend college. The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of current college students and their preparedness for college and career experiences based on receiving instruction in a block scheduling format while in high school. The information collected in this study included seventy-eight valid surveys for 49 females and 29 males, three focus groups of 15 participants (4m, 9f), and six individual qualitative interviews (1m, 5f) with students who had graduated between the years of 2001 and 2019 from a specific school district in Suffolk County, Long Island where block scheduling was present. Responses were coded using nVivo software and themes were analyzed. Results from this study indicate that participants perceived to have an advantage in their preparedness for college after experiencing block scheduling throughout their high school career. Perceived advantages included having the stamina to stay focused, being familiar with the structure of the schedule, and a greater skill set in the areas of collaboration, time management, organization, work/study habits, and communication through rigorous high school experiences.

Book The Impact of Block Scheduling on Student Achievement Attendance and Discipline at the High School Level

Download or read book The Impact of Block Scheduling on Student Achievement Attendance and Discipline at the High School Level written by Smooth (Poet) and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the impact block scheduling has on (a) student academic achievement, discipline, and attendance, and (b) administrator, teacher, and student perceptions. The study compared 2005-2010 data from a high school utilizing the A/B block schedule and a high school under a traditional schedule, in one suburban school district. The study used mixed methods. The quantitative data described, analyzed, and interpreted reading and math FCAT [Florida Comprehensive Achievement Test] scores, attendance rates, and discipline referrals from 2005-2010. A total of seven repeated ANOVAs were conducted to analyze the difference between the two schedule designs with respect to two achievement indicators; reading and math FCAT scores. The qualitative data offered a voice to administrators, teachers, and students, and was gathered through individual face-to-face, email, or phone interviews. The quantitative findings for the study yielded the following conclusions: (1) students experienced higher FCAT reading scores on the A/B block schedule than the traditional schedule; (2) students experienced higher FCAT math scores under the traditional schedule than the A/B block schedule; (3) attendance rates decreased for students under the A/B block schedule and increased for students under the traditional schedule; and (4) discipline referrals decreased at a higher rate for students under the traditional schedule than students under the A/B block schedule. The administrator, teacher, and student perceptions contributed to the following qualitative findings for the study: (1) block scheduling fosters extended learning sessions when properly planned; (2) with fewer transitions discipline issues decreased; (3) attendance was not affected by the block schedule; (4) block schedule allows for the implementation of various instructional strategies; and (5) transitioning from a traditional to a block schedule was thought to be difficult at first, but attainable, and would alleviate any feelings of being rushed. Four appendixes present: (1) Florida High School Report Card; (2) Interview Questions; (3) Participant Consent Form; and (4) Parental Permission Form. (Contains 22 tables.).

Book Block Scheduling and Its Impact on the School Library Media Center

Download or read book Block Scheduling and Its Impact on the School Library Media Center written by Marie Shaw and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-02-28 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Across the country educators are facing the challenge of restructuring the secondary school to meet the needs of students in the twenty-first century. Block scheduling provides sustained time and fosters an environment for active and experiential learning, a key to student success in life. The author, who has spearheaded the adoption of block scheduling in her school's library media center, has prepared a complete guide for library media specialists contemplating or moving to block scheduling. In preparing this guide she has incorporated the experiences of twelve secondary school libraries across the country that have also moved to block scheduling. Step by step, this guide walks the library media specialist through planning, networking, curriculum and instruction, professional development, technology, and assessment. Practical suggestions, forms, lesson plans, and case studies of other media centers that have successfully adopted block scheduling will help the library media specialist to make the transition to the block. Block scheduling places a high demand on staff, materials, and information technologies. Shaw stresses that networking of people and resources is essential to successful adoption of block scheduling. She takes the reader through the planning and transitional phases of a high school adopting block scheduling and addresses concerns about instructional change, ongoing curriculum, and the role of the library media specialist as a teacher of information technology. She provides ideas on where to find professional development and how to network with other library media specialists with expertise in the block and offers practical suggestions on resource sharing, study hall, flexible scheduling, budget, collection development, substitute teachers, and assessment techniques.
