Book excerpt: Professionals coming to remote Kimberley communities can find both the work and life environments very stressful. This research project interviewed five long-serving pastoral counsellers who have lived and worked with professionals in remote Aboriginal communities in the far north of Australia and investigated the self care strategies used by workers these counsellors have assisted. Using Grounded Theory anaylsis the interviews were synthesized to form a narrative image that suggested a possible self care strategy. The image that is used is that of a five link chain, each link representing a relationship, which carries the strain of and mitigates the effects of stress for the professional. The links represent the personal qualities of the professional, the environment, the collegial community of other professionals, prior relational networks and relations with the local community. Proper use of each relational link, without overstressing or under utilization, gives the professional living and working in a remote Kimberley community a sound self care strategy with which to handle the stress that comes with working in isolated, cross cultural situations.

Addiction has serious symptomology and can negatively impact an individual's life in several areas. Not only can the person addicted become negatively impacted, but the addiction professional that treats this disorder can become negatively impacted as well. Because there is often a high co-occurrence of addiction and trauma among addiction clients, this intensifies the clinical profile of such clients which compounds the risk for addiction professionals. It is the addiction professional's response to this combination of addiction and trauma that can cause these professionals to experience compassion fatigue. Research has been done to examine compassion fatigue among a variety of populations, but there has been limited research specifically with addiction professionals. This study aims to add to the literature by focusing on addiction professional's experiences with compassion fatigue and associated symptomology, and to explore the participant's training and their self-care strategies in relation to compassion fatigue. Seven addiction professionals in the Tampa Bay area participated in in-depth interviews that focused on their experiences with compassion fatigue, training, and self-care. The data collected was analyzed qualitatively using thematic analysis. Results indicated compassion fatigue was present among six out the seven participants and that there was a lack of training among these participants. All of the participants shared several self-care strategies they use to address compassion fatigue. The study concludes by providing implications of the research, limitations, and recommendations for future research.

This qualitative research study specifically explored how positioning the physical realm of health within Indigenous spirituality practices can benefit and promote the development of wholistic health and self-care practices for social workers. This research study used a Medicine Wheel model to create a physical well-being intervention program combined with Indigenous spirituality to address balance and wholistic self-care practices for social workers. This study encouraged 13 women-identified participants to explore their personal stories of wholistic self-care. Participants completed pre-interviews prior to the physical intervention start date to assess their current knowledge of wholistic self-care, if and how they were currently practicing self-care, and to identify the challenges and barriers to self-care. The physical wellness intervention included ten sessions, took place one day per week, and included the following wellness activities: yoga, fitness classes, Ojibwe Full Moon Ceremony, Indigenous Sweat Lodge, beading and kickboxing. Each wellness activity began with a "check-in circle" and smudging ceremony and closed with a "check-out circle". Each wellness activity was facilitated by the appropriate leader (further described below). A guided program and space was created for women in the social work profession to allow them to acknowledge their personal and professional stressors and to increase wholistic self-care practices to cope with and prevent burn out, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. To close the study, post-interviews were completed by all participants to capture each of their individual stories and intervention experiences. The interviews gave space for the women to capture the benefits and lessons that they learned, or to acknowledge challenges with participation and with self-care. The pre- and post-interviews were used to tell the stories of the participants and their journey of wholistic self-care and wellness. This research supported the participants to continue doing their "heart" work (social work) of helping children, youth, adults and families while providing a consistent, safe space to explore their personal and professional balance as helpers and practice their own wholistic self-care practices.
