Book excerpt: “A doozy of a doom-laden crime story” from the author of Small Crimes—now a major film—and The Caretaker of Lorne Field (The Washington Post). Stan Green is a jaded New York City cop assigned to the most shocking homicide of his career—and he finds only one witness, a neurologically damaged recluse subject to demonic hallucinations. Then the murderer strikes again. Stan’s best hope is a man who claims to be surrounded by ghoulish apparitions. And there’s just a chance this witness isn’t insane, but instead terrifyingly perceptive . . . Dave Zeltserman’s grisly crime novel is backgrounded by the 2004 ALCS playoffs, when the Red Sox triumphed over the Yankees. A knuckle-whitening, surprising, and compelling trip into Stan’s obsession with a brutal case, this serial-killer mystery is Zeltserman’s darkest, most gripping work yet. “Zeltserman’s lean but muscular style, so evident in A Killer’s Essence and The Caretaker of Lorne Field, is just as sharply honed here . . . Riveting.” —The Boston Globe “This eerie thriller deftly blurs the lines between madness and the perception of reality.” —The Star-Ledger “[A] chilling page-turner attuned to the most discerning of avid crime lovers. Well written and well paced. Recommended.” —New York Journal of Books “Zeltserman’s signature creepiness is available here and there, but what really drives this novel is the engaging portrait of an honest, hardworking cop who, on the job and off, gives the best he’s got, knowing how rarely it will be enough.” —Kirkus Reviews

She knows that Angela will be right by her side when she does. On one momentous day, a hot air balloon passes overhead and Leah discovers their ticket out of their normal lives. Using all of their resources, and Angela’s amazing sewing skills, the pair build their own hot air balloon that will literally lift them to new heights. After months of planning, building, and packing, the day has arrived when they will set off for unknown destinations, purely at the whim of the wind and natural elements. After battling through storms and an attack by an aggressive group of albatross, Leah and Angela find themselves on an isolated island that they can’t wait to explore. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Second Wave feminism collapsed in the early 1980s when a universal definition of women was abandoned. At the same time, as a reaction to the narcissism of white middle class feminism, "intersectionality" led to many different feminisms according to race, sexual preference and class. These ongoing segregations make it impossible for women to unite politically and they have not ended exclusion and discrimination among women, especially in the academy. In Inclusisve Feminism, Naomi Zack provides a universal, relational definition of women, critically engages both Anglo and French feminists and shows how women can become a united historical force, with the political goal of ruling in place of men.

Download or read book Time Is of the Essence written by Phoebe Wilby and published by Time Is of the Essence. This book was released on 2017 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Time marches on. Use it wisely... These stories all have 'time' as their theme. Some deal with a specific point in time while others explore time in other ways. For example, A Moment In Time is a mystery with overtones of ages past, A Modern Fairy Tale tells a light-hearted story of how two people might meet, and Bonnie and Claude explores how relationships might develop over time. I have included stories resulting from interviews I had with three ex World War 1 soldiers, two of whom were imprisoned during the war, one in Europe and the other in the South Pacific. My favourite of these results from a 2002 interview with Eric Abraham, who at the time was 102 years old. I wrote a short piece about some of his experiences, intending to write more. He died a few years later and I regret not taking the time to speak with him again. I hope you enjoy this collection!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential of Literature Thought, Feeling, Imagination and beauty are the essential ingredients of literature. Literature is one among the foremost powerful instruments for forming character. Writers teach us to understand man and know attribute. “Literature may be a record of the simplest thoughts.” - Emerson. Literature is that the artistic expression of thought which is replete with feeling and imagination. “Literature consists of all the books where moral truth and human passion are touched with a selected largeness, sanity and attraction of form.” - Lord Morley. Literature heightens our awareness of human life. Literature enables us to seem at nature with new eyes. Literature interprets with charm of language the experiences and spiritual intuitions of man. Writers teach us to understand man and know attribute. “Great literature is straightforward language charged with going to the utmost possible degree.” - Emerson. Literature could also be a record of man’s dreams and ideals, his hopes and aspirations, his failures and disappointments, his motives and passions, his experiences and observations. It appeals to the widest human interests and thus the only human emotions. It knows no nationality, nor any bounds save those of humanity. In a nutshell, thought, feeling, imagination and beauty of style and form are all equally essential to literature. Here we quote, Lowes Dickinson, “To feel, and in order to express, or at least to understand the expression of all that is lovely in Nature, of all that is poignant and sensitive in man, is to us in itself a sufficient end. A rose in a moonlight garden, the shadow of trees on the turf, almond blossom, scent of pine, the wine cup and guitar, these are the pathos of life and death- to all or any this stuff we are trained to reply , and therefore the response is what we call literature.
