Book Neutrons and Related Gamma Ray Problems Neutronen und Verwandte Gammastrahlprobleme

Download or read book Neutrons and Related Gamma Ray Problems Neutronen und Verwandte Gammastrahlprobleme written by Edoardo Amaldi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 874 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 661 tures, such as occurs in stellar atmospheres and in thermonuc1ear processes, will not be considered 1. Because photoelectric absorption predominates completely at low photon energies, and penetration theory is elementary under these conditions, attention is directed in this artic1e to photon energies above ""20 kev. On the high energy side, this artic1e does not cover the cascade shower processes which are dealt 2 with in cosmic ray studies • In this connection it is recalled that the cascade shower process, which involves electrons and positrons besides X rays, becomes predominant above 10 Mev in heavy elements, and above 100 Mev in light ones. Theories developed for the study of cascade showers in cosmic rays rely on assumptions about the prob ability of interactions with matter which are adequate only at energies of the order of 1 Gev or more. Below this energy there is a gap in which penetration phenomena are qualitatively known and understood but have not yet been calculated in detail. A few detailed experimental studies which have been made at energies up to 300 Mev will be reviewed in this article.

Book Nuclear Winter And The New Defense Systems Problems And Perspectives The 4th International Sem On Nucl War

Download or read book Nuclear Winter And The New Defense Systems Problems And Perspectives The 4th International Sem On Nucl War written by Stanislao Stipcich and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992-08-21 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series started in 1981 with the Erice Seminars when the danger of a nuclear East-West confrontation was menacing the world. The volumes reproduce the crucial steps, from the Nuclear Winter to the Strategic Defense Initiative. After the collapse of the U.S.S.R., new emergencies are now to be faced such as the danger of proliferation of Weapons for Mass Destruction (WMD), the North-South confrontation on ecological problems and the new deal for Science and Technology to help developing countries in their struggle for a better standard of life. The Erice Seminars have attracted the attention of world leaders in Science, Technology and Culture.

Book Old and New Problems in Elementary Particles

Download or read book Old and New Problems in Elementary Particles written by G Puppi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Old and New Problems in Elementary Particles provides information pertinent to elementary-particle physics. This book examines the types of problems facing high-energy physicists. Comprised of 20 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the fundamental properties of Dirac poles, with emphasis on the spin, the electric-dipole moment, and the mass. This text then examines the applications of supergain antenna, which is an interesting cautionary model against an oversimplified application of the notion of indeterminacy. Other chapters explain the uninhibited adoption of a uniform and natural experimental definition of resonance or particle with respect to hadrons. This book illustrates as well how insight into strong-interaction dynamics may be improved by a precise definition of the particle-resonance concept. The final chapter deals with the derivation of the Alder–Weisberger relation, which links the ratio of the two weak coupling constants of the nucleon with an integral over pion absorption cross-sections. Physicists and researchers will find this book useful.

Book Particle Damping Technology Based Structural Control

Download or read book Particle Damping Technology Based Structural Control written by Zheng Lu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-03-27 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a systematic introduction to particle damping technologies, which can be used to effectively mitigate seismic-induced and wind-induced vibration in various structures. Further, it offers comprehensive information on the latest research advances, e.g. a refined simulation model based on the discrete element method and a simplified simulation model based on equivalent principles. It then intensively studies the vibration attenuation effects of particle dampers subjected to different dynamic loads; in this context, the book proposes a new damping mechanism and “global’’ measures that can be used to evaluate damping performance. Moreover, the book uses the shaking table test and wind tunnel test to verify the proposed simulation methods, and their satisfactory damping performance is confirmed. To facilitate the practical engineering application of this technology, optimization design guidelines for particle impact dampers are also provided. In closing, the book offers a preliminary exploration of semi-active particle damping technology, which holds great potential for extension to other applications in which the primary system is subjected to non-stationary excitations.
