Book A PROPOSAL TO MEASURE THE CROSS SECTION OF THE SPACE STAR IN NEUTRON DEUTERON BREAKUP IN A RECOIL GEOMETRY SETUP

Download or read book A PROPOSAL TO MEASURE THE CROSS SECTION OF THE SPACE STAR IN NEUTRON DEUTERON BREAKUP IN A RECOIL GEOMETRY SETUP written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nucleon-deuteron (Nd) breakup is an important tool for obtaining a better understanding of three-nucleon (3N) dynamics and for developing meson exchange descriptions of nuclear systems. The kinematics of the nd breakup reaction enable observables to be studied in a variety of exit-channel configurations that show sensitivity to realistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) potential models and three-nucleon force (3NF) models. Rigorous 3N calculations give very good descriptions of most 3N reaction data. However, there are still some serious discrepancies between data and theory. The largest discrepancy observed between theory and data for nd breakup is for the cross section for the space-star configuration. This discrepancy is known as the "Space star Anomaly". Several experimental groups have obtained results consistent with the "Space Star Anomaly", but it is important to note that they all used essentially the same experimental setup and so their experimental results are subject to the same systematic errors. We propose to measure the space-star cross-section at the Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) using an experimental technique that is significantly different from the one used in previous breakup experiments. This technique has been used by a research group from the University of Bonn to measure the neutron-neutron scattering length. There are three possible scenarios for the outcome of this work: 1) the new data are consistent with previous measurements; 2) the new data are not in agreement with previous measurements, but are in agreement with theory; and 3) the new data are not in agreement with either theory or previous measurements. Any one of the three scenarios will provide valuable insight on the Space Star Anomaly.

Book Differential Cross Section Measurement for the D n Np Reaction

Download or read book Differential Cross Section Measurement for the D n Np Reaction written by Sho Uemura and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The differential cross section for the quasielastic d(n, np) neutron-induced deuteron breakup reaction was measured as a function of incident and scattered particle energies and angles, using a liquid deuterium target at the Weapons Neutron Research (WNR) spallation neutron beam at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center at the Los Alamos National Laboratory. Cross sections were computed for the incident neutron energy ranges of 10010, 20010, and 30010 MeV. We used proton detectors covering a range of = 17 - 25 in the lab frame, and neutron detectors covering a range of = 55 - 76 in the lab frame. Experiment setup and data analysis are discussed, and preliminary results are presented for the cross section.

This book was released on 2018-07-09 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron total cross sections are represented for Li to Pu targets at energies above 0.1 MeV and less than 100 MeV using a modified nuclear Ramsauer formalism. The formalism is derived for energies above 100 MeV by fitting theoretical cross sections. Neutron absorption cross sections are represented by analytic expressions of similar form, but shape resonance phenomena of the Ramsauer effect is not present. Elastic differential cross sections are given as a renormalized impulse approximation. These cross section data bases are useful for nucleon transport applications. Wilson, J. W. and Townsend, L. Book Scattering Length Measurements from Radiative Pion Capture and Neutron deuteron Breakup

Download or read book Scattering Length Measurements from Radiative Pion Capture and Neutron deuteron Breakup written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The neutron-neutron and neutron-proton 1S0 scattering lengths a{sub nn} and a{sub np}, respectively, were determined simultaneously from the neutron-deuteron breakup reaction. Their comparison with the recommended values obtained from two body reactions gives a measure of the importance of three-nucleon force effects in the three-nucleon continuum. In order to check on the result obtained for a{sub nn} from the two-body [pi]−-d capture reaction, a new measurement was performed at LANL. Preliminary results of the three experiments are given.

Book Radiation Shielding

Download or read book Radiation Shielding written by J. Kenneth Shultis and published by Amer Nuclear Society. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 537 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly published book is intended for dual use as a textbook for students in radiation shielding courses and a reference work for shielding practitioners. It emphasizes the principles behind techniques used in various aspects of shield analysis and presents these principles in many different contexts. This approach is intended to provide a strong base of understanding in order to facilitate use of the large shielding codes that have come to dominate shielding design and analysis. An assumption is made that the reader has an understanding of mathematics through basic calculus and vector analysis as well as a knowledge of the nuclear physics of radioactive decay. For most chapters, problem sets are provided.
