When Charles McIntyre founded Defiance, he was more than happy to rule in hell rather than serve in heaven. But things have changed. Now, he has faith, a new wife...and a ten-year-old half-breed son. Infamous madam Delilah Goodnight wants to take it all away from him. How can he protect his kingdom and his loved ones from her schemes without falling back on his past? How does he fight evil if not with evil? Logan Tillane carries a Bible in his hand, wears a gun on his hip, and fights for lost souls any way he can. Newly arrived in Defiance, he has trouble, though, telling saints from sinners. The challenge only worsens when Delilah flings open the doors to the scandalous Crystal Chandelier. She and the new preacher have opposite plans for the town. One wants to save it, one wants to lead it straight to hell. For Tillane and McIntyre, finding redemption was a long, hard road. God's grace has washed away their sins, but the consequences remain and God will not be mocked. For whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap...and the harvest is finally at hand.

Book Defiance in Exile

Download or read book Defiance in Exile written by Waed Athamneh and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2021-09-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a glimpse into Syrian refugee women’s stories of defiance and triumph in the aftermath of the Syrian uprising. The al-Zaatari Camp in northern Jordan is the largest Syrian refugee camp in the world, home to 80,000 inhabitants. While al-Zaatari has been described by the Western media as an ideal refugee camp, the Syrian women living within its confines offer a very different account of their daily reality. Defiance in Exile: Syrian Refugee Women in Jordan presents for the first time in a book-length format the opportunity to hear the refugee women’s own words about torment, struggle, and persecution—and of an enduring spirit that defies a difficult reality. Their stories speak of nearly insurmountable social, economic, physical, and emotional challenges, and provide a distinct perspective of the Syrian conflict. Waed Athamneh and Muhammad Musad began collecting the testimonies of Syrian refugee women in 2015. The authors chronicle the history of Syria’s colonial legacy, the torture and cruelty of the Bashar al-Assad regime during which nearly half a million Syrians lost their lives, and the eventual displacement of more than 5.3 million Syrian refugees due to the crisis. The book contains nearly two dozen interviews, which give voice to single mothers, widows, women with disabilities, and those who are victims of physical and psychological abuse. Having lost husbands, children, relatives, and friends to the conflict, they struggle with what it means to be a Syrian refugee—and what it means to be a Syrian woman. Defiance in Exile follows their fight for survival during war and the sacrifices they had to make. It depicts their journey, their desperate, chaotic lives as refugees, and their hopes and aspirations for themselves and their children in the future. These oral histories register the women’s political outcry against displacement, injustice, and abuse. The book will interest all readers who support refugees and displaced persons as well as students and scholars of Middle East studies, political science, women’s studies, and peace studies.

Book excerpt: Have you ever asked God a question and received no reply? Did you ever seek guidance from God and heard nothing? At eighteen, Kimi, though a Buddhist, vaguely knowing about God, addressed Him wanting to know Him. Though she heard nothing back, His invisible hand guided her life through others and Kimi's own choices. We often make life changing choices relying on our emotions but how different would it be if we sought His hand and be obedient to His Word. He is with us no matter what we choose, but less heart breaks and more blessings are ours if we pick the choice He has for us. Close to seventy years later, Kimi attended a Japanese speaking church and in her own heart language finally understood His love for her. God never forgets our heart's desire of knowing Him. He keeps His promise. "For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And the door is opened to everyone who knocks. Matt. 7:8 (NLT)" Within this true story is proof that God does come through with His promises and our right choices at the crossroads of our life truly does bring unexpected blessings beyond our expectations. Niki Baker, a retired special education teacher, lives with her husband, Robert, in St. Mary's County, Maryland along with two dogs and three cats. Book Studies in French Poetry of the Fifteenth Century

Download or read book Studies in French Poetry of the Fifteenth Century written by C.S. Shapley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My purpose in these studies is to example a careful reading of the too easily despised, too hastily evaluated and too frequently misunderstood poetry of the French fifteenth century. I have begun at the tum of the century with three of the more substantial writers of the first generation (Nesson, Char tier, Taillevent), and while I have in each case read the poet's entire work I have tried to concentrate my efforts on the single poem which seemed his most substantial in terms of the number and importance of the concerns which animate it, the vigor and complexity of his response, and the expres sive richness of the poem as a whole. I have tried in each instance to say only what seemed most relevant and essential, not with respect to any preconceived system but by allowing the categories of my treatment to arise out of a full and extended response to the work itself. When one interrogates a poem in terms of pre-established categories one is all too apt to find what one is seeking and to find only that.

Book Nuclear Power or a Promise Lost

Download or read book Nuclear Power or a Promise Lost written by Edward T. Burns and published by BrownWalker Press. This book was released on 2020-05-01 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book captures the status of current electrical energy markets including the principal forces affecting decisions on selecting an energy source. It represents a seminal work that lays out the electrical energy decision tree for selecting an energy source in a world that is on the verge of catastrophic global warming because of the choices that have been made in the name of cheap energy. The impetus for this book includes the dire need to mitigate continued anthropogenic causes of global warming by turning to carbon free energy sources. Nuclear energy represents such a carbon-free energy source and could be a partial solution to the existential threat facing future society---the threat of a warming planet and its consequential, catastrophic effects on future generations. The world is at a crossroads in human interaction with their environment. The effects of radiation and the relationship of nuclear power to nuclear weapons are both discussed in an understandable and compelling manner. Nuclear energy is contrasted with other energy sources including fossil fuels and renewable energy sources regarding the risks and benefits imposed by each. Important personalities and world events that shaped nuclear power's development are recounted. The historical origins of nuclear power are outlined and the continued impetus to include nuclear power as part of the electric grid energy mix is assessed exposing the obstacles and road blocks to the continued use of nuclear power. Specific attention is paid to revealing the causes and lessons learned from the three severe accidents in commercial nuclear plants: TMI-2, Chernobyl, and Fukushima. An extensive discussion of nuclear waste disposal is provided as part of the decision tree for energy selection. The context for the future of nuclear power as a viable energy source is illuminated by the current battle between economic growth and the harm created by burning fossil fuels. The status of the world's climate and projections for the disruptive effects of global warming on future populations, migration, economics, and world strife are debated against the backdrop of an increasing world population and the drive by developing nations to achieve economic parity with the industrialized nations. Within the context of increased world strife, the quest by nations to obtain nuclear weapons is also discussed. The steps taken by the world to limit nuclear weapons proliferation are examined with emphasis on potential links between nuclear power generation and access to nuclear weapons. The final chapter discusses the moral responsibility of current generations with respect to future generations, specifically, the applicability of "intergenerational equity" in political and social decision-making regarding the actions that add to global warming and those risk averse actions that can be taken to minimize global warming.

Book The Defiance of Global Commitment

Download or read book The Defiance of Global Commitment written by Brian Castellani and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brexit vote; the election of Trump; the upsurge of European nationalism; the devolution of the Arab Spring; global violence; Chinese expansionism; disruptive climate change; the riotous instabilities of the world capitalist system...While diverse in nature, these events share a common denominator: they are less a failure of policy, and more a complex social psychological reaction to globalization, the result of which presently threatens our survival on Earth. Based on a critical reading of Freud’s Civilization and its discontents, The defiance of global commitment constructs a complex social psychology of how people all over the world are addressing globalization. Drawing on the latest advances in the cognitive, social, and complexity sciences, this timely volume presents a global model of defiance and the triangular tensions between nostalgic retreat, global aggression, and civil society, as manifested in forms ranging from nostalgic resentment and LGBTQI issues to racism and ecological aggression. Revealing how globalization and its discontents manifest the darker reaches of the human psyche and its conflicted relations with others, this insightful monograph will appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, interested in fields such as globalization studies, complexity sciences and social psychology.

Book Resistance

Download or read book Resistance written by Agnes Humbert and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2008-11-03 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Agnès Humbert bears devastating witness to her time ... An insider's account of the germination of the French Resistance' William Boyd 'Sober and testifying, sardonic and humorous ... A beautiful and powerful work of literature' The Times In the summer of 1940, as the German Occupation tightened its grip on Paris, Agnès Humbert helped to establish one of the first resistance cells. She had no experience in warfare: she was an art historian, as were most of her early comrades, colleagues from the Musée de l'Homme in Paris. All they had was an unquenchable desire to free their country from the horrors of Nazi occupation. Within a year the group was publishing a news bulletin, helping allied airmen escape and passing military information back to London. Then came the catastrophe of betrayal, followed by arrest and interrogation, imprisonment and trial and, for Agnès, deportation to slave labour camp in Germany. Résistance is the secret journal of a woman who never gave up hope, even in the face of impossible odds.
