Download or read book Comparing Silent Reading Comprehension and Oral Reading Comprehension in Academic Achievement written by Dustin Michael Geiser and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to compare the differences between silent reading comprehension and oral reading comprehension. Throughout this study 22 fourth grade students were assessed through multiple comprehension assessments to find the differences in results of silent vs. oral reading comprehension. This study showed that students with lower level reading abilities performed better on reading assessments that they silently read. Students with middle to upper reading levels performed better on assessments that were orally read to them.

Book excerpt: Reading fluency has been identified as a key component of proficient reading. Research has consistently demonstrated significant and substantial correlations between reading fluency and overall reading achievement. Despite the great potential for fluency to have a significant outcome on students’ reading achievement, it continues to be not well understood by teachers, school administrators and policy makers. The chapters in this volume examine reading fluency from a variety of perspectives. The initial chapter sketches the history of fluency as a literacy instruction component. Following chapters examine recent studies and approaches to reading fluency, followed by chapters that explore actual fluency instruction models and the impact of fluency instruction. Assessment of reading fluency is critical for monitoring progress and identifying students in need of intervention. Two articles on assessment, one focused on word recognition and the other on prosody, expand our understanding of fluency measurement. Finally, a study from Turkey explores the relationship of various reading competencies, including fluency, in an integrated model of reading. Our hope for this volume is that it may spark a renewed interest in research into reading fluency and fluency instruction and move toward making fluency instruction an even more integral part of all literacy instruction.

Book excerpt: Students referred for school psychology services often have reading skills deficits and experience difficulty in other academic areas. There are no procedures, detect small changes in reading growth as student grade level increases (Skinner et al., 2002). The current study was designed to extend research on CBM reading assessment procedures. Specifically, researchers compared the effects of oral and silent reading on the number of questions participants answered correctly across elementary and secondary students. Additionally, researchers compared the effect reading mode (oral versus silent) had on comprehension rates across elementary and secondary students. Finally, the relationships among oral and silent reading comprehension rate and WCPM and oral and silent reading comprehension level and WCPM were analyzed. Participants were assessed in two sessions. In one session, each student read three passages silently and answered comprehension questions. In the other session, each student read three passages orally and answered comprehension questions. The passages and questions used were selected from the Timed Readings Series (Spargo, 1989). For both reading conditions, the investigator recorded the number of seconds required for the student to read each passage, the number of questions the student answered correctly, and the student's rate of comprehension. For the oral reading condition, the experimenter recorded errors and the number of words read correctly in 1 minute. The results of this study support the validity of WCPM as a measure of comprehension rate, but not comprehension level. The results also indicate that oral reading does not hinder reading comprehension, but may actually enhance comprehension relative to silent reading. Thus, the current results suggest that during CBM, asking students to answer questions after reading aloud is appropriate, but measures obtained from the comprehension questions are only useful if converted to rates. The current results support the use of WCPM as a measure of reading comprehension rates. Although the current results support oral reading comprehension rate as a possible measure of general reading skills, future research is needed to establish the reliability, validity, and sensitivity of that measure.

Book The Comparative Effects of Sustained Silent Readings and Repeated Readings on Reading Fluency and Comprehension of Studnets sic At risk for Reading Failure

Download or read book The Comparative Effects of Sustained Silent Readings and Repeated Readings on Reading Fluency and Comprehension of Studnets sic At risk for Reading Failure written by Sarah Ann Knebel and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: This study compared the effects of sustained silent readings and repeated readings on oral reading fluency and comprehension of at-risk students from a 2nd grade class in an urban school with low performance on WJ-III subtests and DIBELS fall benchmark assessments. A multiple baseline across subjects experimental design was used. Intervention was conducted over a 4-16 week period consisting of Repeated Reading. Variables measured were reading fluency: number of correct words read per minute and reading comprehension: number of comprehension items answered correctly. During baseline condition (sustained silent reading) students read grade level passages independently and silently for 10 minutes. They were tested in fluency and comprehension during one minute timings. During the interventions condition (paired repeated reading) students worked in pairs, taking turns reading the passage orally for 10 minutes. They were also tested in fluency and comprehension during one minute timings. The dependent variables in this study were number of words read per minute and the number of comprehension questions answered correctly. Results indicate that students' oral reading fluency and comprehension skills stayed consistent with sustained silent readings, but improved with repeated readings.
