This book was released on 2017-05 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Progressive Course in English Literature Composition IN this volume an attempt has been made to bring into close natural relations elementary work in litera ture and composition. The primary principles of rhetoric have been developed inductively, and applied immediately to the work in literature and composi tion. As in the other books of this series, as much opportunity as possible has been given to the pupil for the cultivation of his powers of self-discovery and self-expression. It has also been the aim of the writer to make this, in reality, a progressive course in English. Not only does the subject-matter proceed from the simple to the complex in the order of the subjects treated; but in the treatment of the various subjects, the advance ment goes forward a single step at a time. Funda mental elements are treated first in every case, suggestive helps being given until such time as the pupil should be able to do without them. This makes it possible for the teacher to omit any chapter or to take any chapter in an order different from that of the book, if he so desires. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Progressive Course in English for Secondary Schools: Literature Composition; Rhetoric Grammar In the present work an attempt has been made to bring into as dose natural relations as possible, for first year pupils of secondary schools, the work in literature, composition and rhetoric and grammar. In this undertaking certain principles based upon the needs and interests of the pupil have been kept constantly in mind. 1. The author's experience has led him to believe that, in the main, the pupil has been told too much; he is surfeited with instruction. Too little scope has been allowed him for the exercise of his powers of discovery and application. The first aim, therefore, of this book is to lead the pupil to do for himself rather than to learn "what it were good to do." A child could hardly learn to walk by sitting tied in a chair, observing the motions of other people. Neither will a pupil ever come to use language correctly and effectively, by studying rules and definitions. Consequently, in the following pages, study ind practice of an inductive nature usually precede definitions. 2. The study of composition and rhetoric is too often disassociated from the life of the pupil. It is a seemingly natural tendency for teachers, under the pressure of work and the demands of school routine, to make the study a formal thing. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English: Composition and Literature W. F. (William Franklin) Webster In July, 1898, I presented at the National Educational Association, convened in Washington, a Course of Study in English. At Los Angeles, in 1899, the Association indorsed the principles of this course, and made it the basis of the Course in English for High Schools. At the request of friends, I have prepared this short text-book, outlining the method of carrying forward the course, and emphasizing the principles necessary for the intelligent communication of ideas. It has not been the purpose to write a rhetoric. The many fine distinctions and divisions, the rarefied examples of very beautiful forms of language which a young pupil cannot possibly reproduce, or even appreciate, have been omitted. To teach the methods of simple, direct, and accurate expression has been the purpose; and this is all that can be expected of a high school course in English. The teaching of composition differs from the teaching of Latin or mathematics in this point: whereas pupils can be compelled to solve a definite number of problems or to read a given number of lines, it is not possible to compel expression of the full thought. The full thought is made of an intellectual and an emotional element. Whatever is intellectual may be compelled iv by dint of sheer purpose; whatever is emotional must spring undriven by outside authority, and uncompelled by inside determination. A boy saws a cord of wood because he has been commanded by his father; but he cannot laugh or cry because directed to do so by the same authority. There must be the conditions which call forth smiles or tears. So there must be the conditions which call forth the full expression of thought, both what is intellectual and what is emotional. This means that the subject shall be one of which the writer knows something, and in which he is interested; that the demands in the composition shall not be made a discouragement; and that the teacher shall be competent and enthusiastic, inspiring in each pupil a desire to say truly and adequately the best he thinks and feels. CHAPTER VIII English Classics The Sketch Book 392. Questions for Study. -- There are, in-general, three kinds of questions below: one kind deals with the impressions which the author aims to produce in his descriptions and reveries; another kind concerns the means he uses to produce the desired impressions; and the third aims to discover what the author tells us of himself in his work. Keep these three things constantly in mind in your study, and try to formulate your ideas into definite answers. The Voyage 1. What is the effect of the temporary absence of worldly scenes and employments upon the voyager? 2. What are some of the subjects for meditation on a sea voyage? 3. What things in Irving's description of the sea are real? what imaginative? 4. What is the central thought in Irving's meditation about the "distant sail gliding along the edge of the ocean"? 5. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Rhetoric: Embodied in Rules, Illustrative Examples, and Progressive Course of Prose Composition To amend incorrect sentences, while of course necessary, is after all a negative thing, and the mental attitude it requires is the critical. Composition is positive, requiring the construc tive attitude on the part of the writer. It seems a pity to keep the student working exclusively at crooked English, without doing something even from the outset to foster that desire to contrive, to build, to bring to pass, which is so necessary to any fruitful literary work. For this reason, there are introduced from the beginning of the book certain problems to solve, the object being to give the student all along something creative to do. As the book progresses, the relative proportion of this con structive work is increased, while the merely critical, which was so predominating at first, becomes more and more subordinate. Not a few of the topics have been suggested by pupils and still others by fellow teachers. I am indebted espe cially to my associate Miss Mercy Brann. It has occurred to me that if carefully grouped the tasks could be made to form a progressive course of some value, and this I have tried to do. Download or read book Practical English Composition Classic Reprint written by Carolyn M. Gerrish and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical English Composition IT is the purpose of this book to accomplish four things for the student: (i) to give him continually increasing power in original composition; (2) to train him in habits of accuracy in mechanical form (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, (3) to develop his interest in good literature; and (4) to stimulate his interest in the affairs of the world in which he lives. From the beginning of the book to the end, students are required to do creative work and are trained to select, ar range, and express ideas so as to make the best use of what they know. The method of teaching is inductive. Models are used in such a way as to encourage and to develop original thought and expression. No blind imitation of models is possible if the method of the book is followed. This requires persistent effort along definitely indicated lines. Beginning with very simple work, the exercises gradually increase in difficulty in both subject matter and technical requirement. The assignments for student practice are varied and very extensive, ranging from the practical to the theoretical, from matters of everyday experience to matters of imagination and fancy. The subjects assigned have been taken almost entirely from lists made out by students when asked to hand in subjects in which they were interested and on which they would like to write. Necessarily, these subjects touch all phases of the lives of young people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is intended for the use, not of schools only, but of that large and increasing class of young men in our great cities, who desire to be guided to the acquirement of a respectable knowledge of our national literature. I believe that there is sufficient novelty in its plan and execution to entitle it to a fair trial; and I am not without hopes that it may help to keep alive that interest in the great masters of the past, which cannot perish without injury.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It would have been hard to do so without the addition of a large number of footnotes which would have been out of place in what is designed as an elementary textbook, and pedantic in what pretends to be no contribution to poetic theory but only the re statement of a position as old as criticism. Download or read book Essentials of English Composition Classic Reprint written by Homer E. Woodbridge and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of English Composition Sir Philip Sidney says of the lawyer that "our wickedness maketh him necessary, and necessity maketh him honorable." Something of the kind, I suppose most teachers would agree, might be said of textbooks of composition. Whether or not necessity makes them honorable, our deficiencies make them necessary. The best teacher of composition I have known did not use a text-book; and if we could all teach like Dean Briggs, we might wisely make a bonfire of the books. As matters stand, however, they are generally regarded as a necessary evil. On another point, I believe, a majority of teachers would agree. Experience has shown, if it has shown anything, that the amount of rhetorical theory which most students can assimilate and put into practice is small. The average college freshman finds it extremely difficult to grasp even the simplest abstract idea; the most that we can reasonably hope is that he may be induced to lay firm hold upon a few basic principles. To multiply abstractions and distinctions is to confuse him hopelessly. If the study of rhetorical theory in the freshman course were an end in itself, we might still, for the sake of the best students, be justified in presenting it elaborately and in detail. But it is not an end in itself; it is admittedly ancillary to correct and clear writing. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
