Book The Behavior of Turbulent Boundary Layers in Adverse Pressure Gradients

Download or read book The Behavior of Turbulent Boundary Layers in Adverse Pressure Gradients written by Hal L. Moses and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of predicting the behavior of the incompressible turbulent boundary layer in an adverse pressure gradient is re-examined. An outline of the problem is given along with a brief summary of the work that has already been done, including both experimental investigation are presented for a separating turbulent boundary layer with various pressure distributions. An approximate theory is developed in which the momentum integral equation is satisfied for each half of the boundary layer. The velocity profiles used in the analysis consist of the well known wall and wake regions, resulting in a two-parameter family with the Reynolds number as one parameter. It is assumed, with some experimental justification, that the eddy viscosity can be reasonably approximated from zero pressure gradient experimets. The numerical calculations, using the Runge-Kutta procedure, show good agreement with the experiments. The reliability that can be expected of such approximate methods is discussed. (Author).

Book On the Theory of the Turbulent Boundary Layer

Download or read book On the Theory of the Turbulent Boundary Layer written by Julius C. Rotta and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulent energy, dissipation, and momentum relations are discussed. A procedure is given for computation of turbulent skin friction in boundary-layer flow with pressure gradients. The boundary layer is divided into a region near the wall where viscosity and surface roughness are important, an outer region which is dependent on friction coefficient and pressure gradient, and an intermediate zone between these two which is unaffected by wall roughness, viscosity, and the outer flow. Analytical confirmation is obtained for the empirical fact that turbulent boundary layers are able to overcome a greater pressure rise than laminar ones.

Book Thoughts on Compressible Turbulent Boundary Layers

Download or read book Thoughts on Compressible Turbulent Boundary Layers written by John Laufer and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A qualitative discussion is given on compressibility effects on turbulence. An attempt is made to extract the main features of supersonic and hypersonic turbulent boundary layers from the information available and to examine the calculation techniques and transformation methods used for predicting behavior. These predictions include estimations of mean velocity and temperature distribution. In the absence of a theory for compressible or even incompressible turbulent boundary layers, most analytical studies approach the problem by reducing it essentially to the problem of an incompressible fluid. A critical examination is made in terms of both the direct approach and the transformation method. Finally, some experiments are recommended to help generate a more consistent empirical formulation of the hypersonic boundary layer problem and improve present methods of measurement regarding mean velocity and mean temperature distributions.
