Download or read book Independent Kashmir written by Christopher Snedden and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many disenchanted Kashmiris continue to demand independence or freedom from India. Written by a leading authority on Kashmir’s troubled past, this book revisits the topic of independence for the region (also known as Jammu and Kashmir, or J&K), and explores exactly why this aspiration has never been fulfilled. In a rare India-Pakistan agreement, they concur that neither J&K, nor any part of it, can be independent. Charting a complex history and intense geo-political rivalry from Maharaja Hari Singh’s leadership in the mid-1920s to the present, this book offers an essential insight into the disputes that have shaped the region. As tensions continue to rise following government-imposed COVID-19 lockdowns, Snedden asks a vital question: what might independence look like and just how realistic is this aspiration?

Download or read book Kashmir written by Arundhati Roy and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2011-10-24 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kashmir is one of the most protracted and bloody occupations in the world—and one of the most ignored. Under an Indian military rule that, at half a million strong, exceeds the total number of US forces in Iraq and Afghanistan, freedom of speech is non-existent, and human- rights abuses and atrocities are routinely visited on its Muslim-majority population. In the last two decades alone, over seventy thousand people have died. Ignored by its own corrupt politicians, abandoned by Pakistan and the West, which refuses to bring pressure to bear on its regional ally, India, the Kashmiri people’s ongoing quest for justice and self- determination continues to be brutally suppressed. Exploring the causes and consequences of the occupation, Kashmir: The Case for Freedom is a passionate call for the end of occupation, and for the right of self- determination for the Kashmiri people.
Download or read book Once a Prince of Sarila written by Narendra Singh Sarila and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2008-03-30 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Princely India in the 1930s and '40s enjoyed a golden age which already seems immeasurably distant from the thriving, modern nation of today. These were halcyon days of bejewelled and autocratic Maharajas; life in marble palaces mirrored in lakes or in mighty stone fortresses on craggy hills; tiger hunts on elephant-back and elephant hunts on foot; and lavish house parties ringing with the sound of polo and music and laughter. As heir apparent to the central Indian kingdom of Sarila, Narendra Singh Sarila was born into the very heart of this society and his life offers a unique vista on a vanished world. This warm and unsentimental personal history beautifully evokes life at the end of the British Raj in vivid and colourful detail. But it also reveals how, despite their position, Sarila and his family embraced the changes occasioned by Independence and adapted rapidly to its new demands. In 1947, at the age of just 21, Sarila put his childhood concerns firmly behind him when he became Aide de Camp to Lord Mountbatten, the last British Governor General of India. Once a Prince in Sarila draws on his experiences and his detailed diaries from the period and includes intimate and revealing portraits of Lord Mountbatten and his wife, Edwina, as well as their many prestigious visitors - including Jawaharlal Nehru and Sardar Patel among other top civil and military leaders, both British and Indian."Once a Prince in Sarila" is a unique history of a forgotten world and Sarila is a sensitive and perceptive guide to India's transition from Empire to an independent nation.

Download or read book The Making of Early Kashmir written by Muhammad Ashraf Wani and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-02-22 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-length history of early Kashmir locating it beyond its regional context, from pre-history to the thirteenth century. Drawing on a variety of sources—including conventional archaeological and literary sources, as well as non-conventional sources like philology, toponym and surnames—it presents a connected history of early Kashmir over the longue duree. It challenges tendencies towards nationalist historiographies of the region by situating it in the context of the shared histories of humanity. The volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of history, archaeology, anthropology and South Asian studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After 1945, the face of Indian State of J&K was allowed to be painted by some to the benefit of external and internal disruptive elements. Not only this, questions like delayed accession of Indian State of Jammu and Kashmir, ‘conditional’ accession, Article 370 of Constitution of India, dual ‘citizenship’ for subjects of Jammu & Kashmir and ‘commitments’ made with Kashmiries have not been adequately addressed even by Government of India for six decades. Even Art370 of Constitution of India has been pushed into unfair controversies. Affairs concerning the Indian state of J&K have been the victim of mishandling. Local J&K political leadership has been resting her stakes more only on local governance. In 1950s the school children in J&K were told stories about one Maqbool Sherwani (a 19 yr youth who stood against ‘Pakistani’ invaders in October 1947) where as in 2014 one would hear more of Maqbool Bhat (founder of JKLF who was sentenced to death in 1968, who allegedly also masterminded hijacking of Indian aeroplane in 1971 to Lahore) who was hanged in Tihar Jail on 11th February 1984. All these years focus has remained more on Kashmir Valley only (just 10% of whole area), still common man there has been no less a sufferer, one would ask ‘Why’?
Download or read book Shi ism in Kashmir written by Hakim Sameer Hamdani and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Muslim rule in Kashmir ended in 1820, Sikh and later Hindu Dogra Rulers gained power, but the country was still largely influenced by Sunni religious orthodoxy. This book traces the impact of Sunni power on Shi'i society and how this changed during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book identifies a distinctive Kashmiri Shi'i Islam established during this period. Hakim Sameer Hamdani argues that the Shi'i community's religious and cultural identity was fostered through practices associated with the martyrdom of Imam Husayn and his family in Karbala, as well as other rituals of Islam, in particular, the construction and furore surrounding M'arak, the historic imambada (a Shi'i house for mourning of the Imam) of Kashmir's Shi'i. The book examines its destruction, the ensuing Shi'i -Sunni riot, and the reasons for the Shi'i community's internal divisions and rifts at a time when they actually saw the strong consolidation of their identity.
Download or read book Kashmir s Contested Pasts written by Chitralekha Zutshi and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-09 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering and comprehensive study of the historical imagination in Kashmir, this book explores the conversations between the ideas of Kashmir and the ideas of history taking place within Kashmir’s multilingual historical tradition. Analysing the deep linkages among Sanskrit, Persian, and Kashmiri narratives, Kashmir’s Contested Pasts contends that these traditions drew on and influenced each other to imagine Kashmir as far more than simply an unsettled territory or a tourist paradise. By offering a historically grounded reflection on the memories, narrative practices, and institutional contexts that have informed, and continue to inform, imaginings of Kashmir and its past, the book suggests new ways of understanding the debates over history, territory, identity, and sovereignty that shape contemporary South Asia.
