Book A Primer of Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Primer of Socialism Classic Reprint written by Thomas Kirkup and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Socialism Not long ago Socialism was a theory of a few adventurous thinkers. Now it has millions of earnest and ardent adherents in the most advanced countries of the world. With many fluctuations in its apparent growth, it has been making vast progress during recent years. It is still spreading and exciting attention in all quarters. A most surprising feature of a remarkable movement is the too obvious fact that, while all men are talking about it, so few understand it. Might we not reasonably expect that a subject which has raised so much hope and enthusiasm among the most advanced of the working classes of the world should receive very careful examination? Such a movement may be misguided; but it is hardly a fit theme for passion and prejudice, for epigram, paradox, or pedantry. It is a matter for the most serious study. Book The Road Ahead

Download or read book The Road Ahead written by Harry W. Laidler and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Road Ahead: A Primer of Capitalism and Socialism A Brilliant American editor has recently written that a period of great change in this country "is not only indicated; it is certain." We in America will soon find ourselves "in one of the great periods of reorganization and pioneering." Other countries have already entered that era. The old generations of Americans have given little attention to social pioneering. They have sought to build up the nation's power to produce and have let it go at that. On the question of distribution they have adopted a policy of drift. Many of these problems will be left for solution to the generation of boys and girls, young men and women, now in the schools and colleges of the country. This generation should begin now to prepare themselves for the great task ahead. This little primer is a modest attempt to help them to make a start in that preparation. It was written chiefly for boys and girls from the seventh to the tenth grades, the higher grades in grammar schools and the lower grades in high schools. It is hoped, however, that interest will not be confined to these groups. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book A History of Socialism Classic Reprint written by Thomas Kirkup and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 506 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Socialism We all know that the propaganda of socialism has been attended with intemperate and violent language with wild opinions which are often inconsistent with the first principles of social order, with revolutionary outbreaks leading to bloodshed, desolation and long-con tinned unrest and suspicion. These things are greatly to be deplored. But we shall be wise if we regard them as symptoms of wide-spread and deep-seated social disease. The best way to cure such disease is to study and remove the causes of it. No physician will have any success in combating a malady if he content him self with suppressing its symptoms. For the study of socialism two things are essential on the part of the reader - good-will and the Open mind. Socialism has at least a most powerful pro visional claim on our good-will, that it professes to represent the cause of the sufferers in the world's long agony, of the working-classes, of women, and of the down-trodden nations and races. If it can make any solid contribution in such a far-reaching cause it has the strongest right to be heard. Book Introduction to Socialism Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Socialism The report is on a crop of bushels, and the commissioner divides the total data by giving the cost for 20 bushels. Human labor 2 hours, 58 minutes (call it 3 hours). Animal labor (an item that we shall later see will soon be eliminated), 8 hours. Twenty bushels for three hours' labor. Add 1-3 that it may more nearly conform with our definition of labor cost, and we have 20 bushels for four hours, or our assumed Socialist day. How many bushels can you now get for a 10-hour day? And mark this, that this report includes every item of labor from the time men go forth to plow the ground until the wheat is sacked and stored in the granary. But men do not go to this work with a single plow, a pair of bob-tailed mules and chain harness - do not go forth to wear them selves out plodding all, day to turn over about one and one-half acres. They go with steam plows and steam threshers; they do the work as it should be done. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Studies in Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Studies in Socialism Classic Reprint written by Jean Jaures and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Socialism The following essays were first published in a Socialist daily paper in Paris, and are therefore addressed to a public not only well versed in the main theories of Socialism, but in the various questions that have arisen since Socialist ideas have ceased to be merely theories and have be come crystallised into party programmes. In America, however, we cannot take for granted, as M. Jaures does, a familiarity with these ideas, and it has therefore seemed best to prefix to a translation of his essays a summary of the funda mental Socialist theories and of the various methods advocated. Although Socialists differ upon many points, they all agree on the following main definition: Socialism is the doctrine that the means of pro duction (that is, capital, land, and raw materials, or in other words, all wealth which is used for the creation of more wealth) should not be owned by individuals, but by society. Book The Case for Socialism Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Case for Socialism Classic Reprint written by Fred Henderson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case for Socialism One of the most remarkable and hopeful aspects of the present great revival of Socialism, and one of the earnests of its ultimate triumph, is the sudden multitude of capable workers it has called into activity. The older movement in the "eighties" had only a few spokesmen and writers; now one can scarcely take up a local newspaper without finding evidence of capable exponents. Socialism, it is scarcely too much to say, has given men souls, has created minds; never was there a movement so independent of its leaders, so sure to produce men at its need. Here, for instance, is Mr. Henderson, with this admirable tract of his. I know he will forgive my confessing that I had never heard of him until my friend Mr. Gerald Gould called my attention to his manuscript. And here it is, closely and clearly reasoned, persuasive, plain, and easy. Let the reader compare it with Mr. Arnold Forster's recent ridiculous attack upon the Socialist position - or rather, I should say, his recent misunderstanding and misstatement of the Socialist position. Let the reader put it thoughtfully beside the utterance of any contemporary anti-Socialist, except, let us say, Mr. Mallock. There is no gainsaying its superior grip, its force, its conviction. It is one more good weapon for the propaganda of the most inspiring movement, the best-equipped movement intellectually, that the world has ever seen. Download or read book A Plain Examination of Socialism Classic Reprint written by Gustave Simonson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plain Examination of Socialism In Book I., I state certain fundamental facts of human nature, as well as certain economic principles which I believe to have the character of immutable natural laws. In Book II. Is given a brief description of the present system of human society with respect to its economic dealings; the socialistic attack on this present system, the weakness of the objections thereto, and the insuperable difficulties of remedying them. In Book III we step into the socialists' camp, take up their general proposals, examine them in detail, and show what, if anything, they must lead to. I have endeavoured to treat the subject strictly from an economic standpoint, believing that socialism in any form can only be combated successfully by presenting valid economic arguments against it.
