Download or read book Old Testament History Classic Reprint written by Ismar J. Peritz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament History The present treatment of Old Testament history aims to conform to the object of the series as handbooks to Bible study. The Bible itself is, accordingly, the main primary source. In each Section the biblical text, as indicated in the margin, is the basis Of the discussion, and requires the first attention of the student. Where the biblical material is most abundant the history is consequently the fullest. But it has become increasingly evident that the material of the Bible is not chronologically arranged, but that accounts centuries apart in their origin and point of view are Often found side by Side or interwoven with each other. The recognition of this fact is the result of the historical and scientific method of the Bible study of our day. It will account for the order and method here adopted. If the reason for the procedure is not always fully stated, it is due to the design of the series not to deal SO much with the process as with the results achieved. Only where Silence would leave the biblical situation obscure was it deemed necessary to enter into the discussion of critical questions, and then only in the briefest way possible. The logical movement of Old Testament history which is the outcome of the critical use of the biblical material proves ultimately its strongest justification. Download or read book Primer of the Bible Classic Reprint written by William Henry Bennett and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of the Bible The Object of this Primer is to sketch, in the light of recent criticism, the history of the Bible the composition of the books - as far as possible in chronological order; their relations to one another, and to the history of Israel, of Judaism, and of the Church and the process by which they were chosen, collected, and set apart as Sacred Scriptures. In order to furnish a clear and intelligible outline of the subject, its treatment has been limited in two important directions. First, alternative theories are only referred to when they are based on the same general principles of criticism as those assumed in the Primer. An attempt to compare, in this little work, the opposing views of radically difi'erent schools would have only led to obscurity and confusion. Secondly, facts which must be familiar to anyone who is likely to read this work, are only referred to when some mention of them is necessary to make the treatment of a subject clear, continuous, and complete. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Biblical History: Old Testament Religious education is one of the many problems of our day, and nowhere is the difficulty more acute than in the case of the Old Testament. Under no circumstances is it an easy task to arrange the different component parts of a volume so varied in such a manner as to give a young student a clear idea of its meaning and purpose. Isolated stories may arouse interest, but their connexion with the rest is not very obvious. Here and there a psalm or prophecy may touch the heart; but it stands as a thing apart, without anything to account for its origin. Not unfrequently, moreover, in the course of instruction in a particular book we meet with narratives apparently unedifying, or sentiments which are certainly not in accord with the highest views today. There is the further difficulty of answering questions like Is such an account true? Is this or that statement in accordance with what we are taught in a lesson on science or geography? Do people really believe this? For youth is a season of credulous scepticism. A child will accept much on authority, and at the same time is ready with questions going to the Very root of a matter. He also possesses an instinctive power of detecting that the teacher is himself doubtful as to the facts on which he is insisting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Old Testament History: With Three Maps Hastings' Dictionary of tite Bible. Nevertheless, though I have drawn freely upon the learning of previous writers, I have throughout endeavoured to verify their assertions and to check their inferences, so that the opinions ex pressed have not been formed without independent inquiry and a sense of responsible judgment. Of the many defects of my work, due to limitations partly of space and partly of capacity, I am fully con scious, but its deficiencies will perhaps appear less serious if account be taken of the class of readers whose wants it is meant to supply. It is not intended for scholars, who will find in it little that is unfamiliar except the mistakes, but for less advanced students, who require in a text-book not so much extensive erudition as simplicity of method and perspicuity of statement. If it satisfies in any degree the needs of such, it will have achieved its purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Manual of Bible History Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Bible History Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Charles Hart and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Bible History, Vol. 1 That a Bible History for Catholic students should be brought out by one of our laity is a hopeful and encouraging sign. Would that a lively interest in all Biblical studies, and indeed in all branches of Christian learning, were not, as some seem to think it may be and should be, confined so closely to the ranks of the clergy! Nowadays the Church, the custodian of Revelation, needs champions drawn from all classes of her sons; and she is right in expecting that amongst the foremost of her defenders should be found some, at least, of those who, though not sharing in the priestly character, yet exercise in her name the sacred office of teaching. Of all who exercise that office she has a right to exact something more than a mere skin-deep acquaintance with that which they teach. Such an acquaintance naught can beget in them but a genuine love of their subject, and the more exalted and sublime the subject, the more ardent ought that love to be. That our teachers are, as a body, thoroughly in love with their subject we have had wide and abundant proof, and the publication of this Manual will be one more welcome evidence of the fact. Particularly is it encouraging to see it brought out at the present moment, when the hands of the invader seem to threaten the existence of our schools, and one is perforce reminded of the sturdy Roman who paid costprice for a field outside the city gates at the moment when Hannibal was encamped upon it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the slaying of Goliath, David was made the constant companion of Saul; and he and Jonathan became sworn friends. But as the women of Israel sang the praises of David after the slaying of Goliath, and ascribed tens of thousands of slain to David and only thousands to Saul, Saul began to dread him as a possible rival. -from "The Reign of Saul" This concise overview of the Old Testament, from a respected and prolific Biblical scholar, strives to offer a level-headed assessment of the oldest tales in the world's oldest book. Brief synopses of the major characters and storylines-from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob to the Flight of Israel, the Syrian Wars, and the Settlement of Judah-are presented with an awareness of the different moral climate in which we live today, with a critical bent toward the historicity of the events depicted, and with a skeptical eye toward the miraculous. While never dismissing the importance of faith, this classic 1924 work embraces the necessity of both the heart and the mind in gaining a full understanding of the Old Testament.

Book A Smaller Scripture History

Download or read book A Smaller Scripture History written by William Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Smaller Scripture History: In Three Parts: Old Testament History; Connection of Old and New Testaments; New Testament History to A. D. 70 To Simplify the plan, and to suit the comprehension of the young, the book is confined for the most part to a narrative of leading facts, avoiding critical discussion on the one hand, and theological exposition on the other. The Notes, which have been added very sparingly, on points which could scarce ly be left unexplained, are intended chiefly, for the teacher. Other matters, which the teacher may desire to introduce at his discretion, will be found in the Student's Manuals of Old Testament and of New Testament History, the order of which is here generally followed. As the book is meant to be used with, and not at all in place of, the Bible, many of those exquisite stories, which are only Spoiled by the attempt to repeat them in other words, are merely referred to, leaving the details to be read in Scripture itself; and thus space has been gained to make the general narrative more complete. All the Old Testament and almost all the New were written by Jews, and Jesus Christ was born a Jew. The history of the Jews is part of the story of Jesus Christ, because it explains how God prepared the way for Christ; how the teaching of the prophets helped men to understand the words of Christ; and how wealth and poverty, victory and defeat, imperial power and shameful slavery, alike fashioned the Jews to be kinsfolk of the Saviour of the world. This book was released on 2018-07-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to the Old Testament by John Edgar McFadyen Excerpt THE ORDER OF THE BOOKS In the English Bible the books of the Old Testament are arranged, not in the order in which they appear in the Hebrew Bible, but in that assigned to them by the Greek translation. In this translation the various books are grouped according to their contents-first the historical books, then the poetic, and lastly the prophetic. This order has its advantages, but it obscures many important facts of which the Hebrew order preserves a reminiscence. The Hebrew Bible has also three divisions, known respectively as the Law, the Prophets, and the Writings. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff.
