Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2017 APA William James Book Award The concept of passion is one we regularly use to describe our interests, and yet there is no broad theory that can explain the development and consequences of passion for activities across people's lives. In The Psychology of Passion, Robert J. Vallerand presents the first such theory, providing a complete presentation of the Dualistic Model of Passion and the empirical evidence that supports it. Vallerand conceives of two types of passion: harmonious passion, which remains under the person's control, and obsessive passion, which controls the person. While the first typically leads to adaptive behaviors, the obsessive form of passion leads to less adaptive and, at times, maladaptive behaviors. Vallerand highlights the effects of these two types of passion on a number of psychological phenomena, such as cognition, emotions, performance, relationships, aggression, and violence. He also discusses the development of passion and reviews a range of literature on passion for activities.

Book excerpt: Eyes down, little wolf. In her world, the strong were broken young or they didn’t survive. Eyes down, little wolf, Zee’s father would say. You aren’t strong enough yet. Zennia Day kept her eyes down and stayed quiet, knowing that one day, she’d escape. When her chance comes, she finds herself on a road that takes her far from Massachusetts, all the way to North Carolina. She has her eyes on the future…until she meets Niko, a dominant Therian male and future Prime. When she looks at him, instead of a challenge for dominance, Zee sees a promise of forever. Niko charmed her, teased her…and stole her heart. Mere days later, after making a public, permanent claim, he crushed that same heart in his fist, tossing her aside in front of the entire world and casting her out of pack lands. Ten years later, she's an outcast, living far from her own when she gets word her father is dying. She can do nothing—she was banned. Violating Niko’s order was to court punishment, even if it was just to tell her father good-bye. “Day is dying.” The blunt words almost had him on his knees until Niko realized his second-in-command wasn’t talking about Zee, but her father. No Therian is ever left to die alone, so Niko sent orders the Day family to come home. Niko is unprepared for Zee’s message. I have no pack. I have no home. The words leave him shattered. Realizing what he’d done in his rage, Niko pushes harder for answers. It doesn’t take long to discover that what he’d heard a decade earlier had been based on lies. Because of those lies, he’d thrown away the love of his life. Zee’s been paying the price ever since. Now he must mend a heart he’d broken...and convince her to give him one more chance.

Book Kazantzakis Volume 1

Download or read book Kazantzakis Volume 1 written by Peter Bien and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2012-08-16 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "No author who lives in Greece," writes Peter Bien, "can avoid politics." This first volume of his major intellectual biography of Nikos Kazantzakis approaches the distinguished--and controversial--writer by describing his struggle with political questions that were in reality aspects of a fervent religious search. Beginning with Kazantzakis's early career in fin-de-siècle Paris and his discovery of William James, Nietzsche, and Bergson, the book continues by describing his experiments with communism in turbulent Greece, his visits to Soviet Russia, and the publication of his epic Odyssey in 1938. Bien demonstrates that politics and religion cannot be separated in Kazantzakis's development. His major concern was personal salvation, but the method he employed to win that salvation was political engagement. Did deliverance lie in nationalism? Communism? Fascism? He eventually rejected each of these possible solutions as morally appalling. Abused by both left and right, he insisted on an "eschatological politics" of spiritual fulfillment. This compelling biography will be essential reading for Kazantzakis scholars and for a wide audience of those who already admire the Greek author's work. In addition, it will provide an introduction to the first three decades of Kazantzakis's career for those who have yet to enjoy such passionate and stirring novels as Zorba the Greek, The Greek Passion, and The Last Temptation of Christ. This first volume provides an introduction to the initial three decades of Kazantzakis's career for those who have enjoyed such vibrant and stirring novels as Zorba the Greek, The Greek Passion, and The Last Temptation of Christ.

Book Passion Capital

Download or read book Passion Capital written by Paul Alofs and published by Signal. This book was released on 2013-01-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Passion Capital is a revolutionary asset that will completely change your idea of how to build long-term success for your career, company, or cause. Ask leaders in any country this essential question: "What is your most valuable asset?" and they may suggest one of three traditional forms of capital - financial, human, or intellectual. These are intelligent, well-meaning answers, but they are also completely wrong. More valuable than money, human resources, and intellectual property, Passion Capital is what separates leaders from followers, and innovators from imitators. It is the foundation upon which all other forms of capital are built. Passion is an emotion, but Passion Capital is tangible. It is the energy, intensity, and sustainability leaders use to build lasting value and competitive advantage. Organizations that possess Passion Capital - Apple, Johnson & Johnson, Four Seasons Hotels, the Montreal Canadiens, among others - lead their sectors, while those that rely on established forms of capital may get stuck in neutral and fail to achieve their full potential. Passion Capital presents seven principles for growing and investing in this new asset class and includes over fifty insightful stories drawn from business, not-for-profit, the arts sector, and politics. In this groundbreaking book, veteran business leader Paul Alofs ushers in a whole new way of thinking about the very definition of success and reveals how to acquire the world's most valuable asset and apply it to your career, company, or cause.

Book Speculum Spinozanum 1677 1977

Download or read book Speculum Spinozanum 1677 1977 written by Siegfried Hessing and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 653 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1978. These essays are written by distinguished philosophers from many countries and were published as a homage to Spinoza in the year which marked the three-hundredth anniversary of his death. A special feature of the book is that it includes a recently discovered letter by Spinoza, reproduced for the first time in English and in facsimile, with a commentary. The controversial influence of Spinoza on Freud is discussed, and illustrated by facsimile reproductions of original letters, hitherto unknown to Freudians and Spinozists alike. These letters direct revealing light on some of Freud’s attitudes. Important parallels between East and West will also attract the student of Spinoza.

Book The Passionate Mind of Maxine Greene

Download or read book The Passionate Mind of Maxine Greene written by William F. Pinar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-08 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maxine Greene is the most important philosopher of education in the United States today. The author of Teacher as Stranger (1973), Landscapes of Learning (1978), Dialectic of Freedom (1988), and Releasing the Imagination (1995), Greene has influenced tens of thousands of teachers in North America as well as her colleagues in philosophy of education, teacher education, and curriculum studies. While widely cited, Greene has not - until now - been the subject of sustained scholarly analysis and investigation. William F. Pinar has organized a systematic study of Greene's contribution from several points of view: studies of the four books; studies of the intellectual and aesthetic influences upon her theory; and her influence on the various specializations within the broad field of education: the teaching of English, arts education, philosophy of education, curriculum studies, religious education, cognitive theory, and theory of teaching. The book opens and concludes with Maxine Greene's own autobiographical statements.

Book The Gentle Barbarian

Download or read book The Gentle Barbarian written by V.S. Pritchett and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2011-10-28 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A gentle giant', as the Goncourts called him, Turgenev emerged from the barbarous yet doting rules of a terrible mother, whose cruelties to her serfs are at the heart of his hatred of serfdom. He was saturated in femininity and could not write unless he was in love. When he freed himself from his mother, he became enslaved by the famous Spanish singer, Pauline Viardot, married to a Frenchman. He was heir to vast estates, a convinced Westerner, proud to be both European and deeply Russian, and one of the most civilized men of his time. This is his story.
