Book A Preliminary Survey of Department of Energy Microelectronics Capabilities Related to Department of Defense Needs

Download or read book A Preliminary Survey of Department of Energy Microelectronics Capabilities Related to Department of Defense Needs written by Robert Rolfe and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined how key selected Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory capabilities align with Department of Defense (DoD) microelectronics requirements. DoD microelectronics, electronic materials, and electronic integration technology requirements were identified in the annual Defense Technology Area Plan (DTAP). An analysis of open information was used to select the key DOE laboratories with focused activities in the microelectronics area. The selected organizations were visited by the study team. The resulting analysis shows that the selected DOE laboratories and facilities have strong microelectronics capabilities in a wide range of areas relevant to the DTAP areas examined. A number of opportunities are identified for cooperative DoD-DOE microelectronics activities. Recommendations are made on areas of further analysis particularly in better coordinating and managing the defense interests across agencies.

Book Defense Energy Information System A Preliminary Analysis Volume I Conceptual Design

Download or read book Defense Energy Information System A Preliminary Analysis Volume I Conceptual Design written by Richard A. Schmidt and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey was performed of the energy data needs of the Department of Defense to serve as the basis for the design of a Defense energy information system. Concerns and typical problems of DoD managers related to energy were identified and categorized in order to define types of data the information system would have to handle. Data deficiencies and limitations of existing DoD information systems were described. Using ARPA developed advanced information system technology a concept was designed which would be capable of integrating the data bases into a central computerized data structure that could be accessed remotely via terminals on the ARPA network. A stepwise program for modular implementation of the concept was recommended including tests and user trials. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of the DoD's energy information-related capabilities and requirements was performed, with special emphasis on the Defense Fuel Supply Center. Patterns of energy transactions in the DoD were examined in routine, hardship, and military operations situations. Requirements for information about energy by DoD were assessed, and these were used to establish design considerations for a coordinated Defense Energy Information System (DEIS). Elements of a program plan for implementation of an immediate problem-solving DEIS capability were presented, and recommendations for evolutionary growth to a longer term capability were included. This book was released on 2020-01-09 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors have done a masterful job of charting the important story of DARPA, one of the key catalysts of technological innovation in US recent history. By plotting the development, achievements and structure of the leading world agency of this kind, this book stimulates new thinking in the field of technological innovation with bearing on how to respond to climate change, pandemics, cyber security and other global problems of our time. The DARPA Model provides a useful guide for governmental agency and policy leaders, and for anybody interested in the role of governments in technological innovation. —Dr. Kent Hughes, Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars This volume contains a remarkable collection of extremely insightful articles on the world’s most successful advanced technology agency. Drafted by the leading US experts on DARPA, it provides a variety of perspectives that in turn benefit from being presented together in a comprehensive volume. It reviews DARPA’s unique role in the U.S. innovation system, as well as the challenges DARPA and its clones face today. As the American model is being considered for adoption by a number of countries worldwide, this book makes a welcome and timely contribution to the policy dialogue on the role played by governments in stimulating technological innovation. — Prof. Charles Wessner, Georgetown University The U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has played a remarkable role in the creation new transformative technologies, revolutionizing defense with drones and precision-guided munitions, and transforming civilian life with portable GPS receivers, voice-recognition software, self-driving cars, unmanned aerial vehicles, and, most famously, the ARPANET and its successor, the Internet. Other parts of the U.S. Government and some foreign governments have tried to apply the ‘DARPA model’ to help develop valuable new technologies. But how and why has DARPA succeeded? Which features of its operation and environment contribute to this success? And what lessons does its experience offer for other U.S. agencies and other governments that want to develop and demonstrate their own ‘transformative technologies’? This book is a remarkable collection of leading academic research on DARPA from a wide range of perspectives, combining to chart an important story from the Agency’s founding in the wake of Sputnik, to the current attempts to adapt it to use by other federal agencies. Informative and insightful, this guide is essential reading for political and policy leaders, as well as researchers and students interested in understanding the success of this agency and the lessons it offers to others.

Book China s Strategic Modernization Implications for the United States

Download or read book China s Strategic Modernization Implications for the United States written by Mark A. Stokes and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional wisdom portrays the People's Republic of China (PRC) People's Liberation Army (PLA) as a backward continental force that will not pose a military challenge to its neighbors or to the United States well into the 21st century. PLA writings that demonstrate interest in exploiting the revolution in military affairs (RMA) are dismissed by a large segment of the PLA- watching community as wistful fantasies. The author offers an alternative perspective by outlining emerging PLA operational concepts and a range of research and development projects that appear to have been heavily influenced by U.S. and Russian writings on the RMA. Fulfillment of the PLA's vision for the 21st century could have significant repercussions for U.S. interests in the Asia-Pacific region.

Book Rising Above the Gathering Storm

Download or read book Rising Above the Gathering Storm written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-03-08 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world where advanced knowledge is widespread and low-cost labor is readily available, U.S. advantages in the marketplace and in science and technology have begun to erode. A comprehensive and coordinated federal effort is urgently needed to bolster U.S. competitiveness and pre-eminence in these areas. This congressionally requested report by a pre-eminent committee makes four recommendations along with 20 implementation actions that federal policy-makers should take to create high-quality jobs and focus new science and technology efforts on meeting the nation's needs, especially in the area of clean, affordable energy: 1) Increase America's talent pool by vastly improving K-12 mathematics and science education; 2) Sustain and strengthen the nation's commitment to long-term basic research; 3) Develop, recruit, and retain top students, scientists, and engineers from both the U.S. and abroad; and 4) Ensure that the United States is the premier place in the world for innovation. Some actions will involve changing existing laws, while others will require financial support that would come from reallocating existing budgets or increasing them. Rising Above the Gathering Storm will be of great interest to federal and state government agencies, educators and schools, public decision makers, research sponsors, regulatory analysts, and scholars.

Book Midsize Facilities

Download or read book Midsize Facilities written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-04-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the instruments now used for materials research are too complex and expensive for individual investigators to own, operate, and maintain them. Consequently, they have become increasingly consolidated into multi-user, small to midsized research facilities, located at many sites around the country. The proliferation of these facilities, however, has drawn calls for a careful assessment of best principles for their operation. With support from the Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, the NRC carried out a study to characterize and discuss ways to optimize investments in materials research facility infrastructure with attention to midsize facilities. This report provides an assessment of the nature and importance of mid-sized facilities, their capabilities, challenges they face, current investment, and optimizing their effectiveness.
