An awareness of the communist threat dominated French literature on the Franco-Vietminh war, and this concern with the perils of communism undoubtedly had racial overtones, thereby combining the new ideological fear of communism with the more traditional European concern with the Asian 'Yellow Peril'. It was through this concern over the spread of communism in Asia that Indochina became a front-line in the Cold War, and consequently attracted the attention of American writers and polemicists. The Cold War dimension of the Indochina conflict was a central aspect of The Ugly American, and dominated the other polemical works of Lederer and Burdick and the very important memoirs of Dr. Thomas Dooley.
