Book A Preliminary Study on Finite Element hosted Couplings with the Boundary Element Method

Download or read book A Preliminary Study on Finite Element hosted Couplings with the Boundary Element Method written by J. V. Cox and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigated the theoretical and numerical basis of finite element-hosted couplings with the boundary element method (BEM). The emphasis of the study is on (1) conceptually unifying the different coupling approaches and (2) providing an algorithm to facilities future implementation. Overviews of both the indirect and direct boundary element formulations are included. The theoretical development of BEM stiffness matrices is limited to a physically intuitive derivation based on the indirect BEM. Discontinuity between finite element and boundary element regions is an inherent trait of the boundary element method; this behavior is not eliminated by simply matching the order of shape functions between the two methods. A discussion of the numerical implementation of BEM-formulated stiffness matrices addresses both the direct and indirect BEMs. The direct BEM is better suited in coupled solution approaches due to its simpler traction-displacement relationship. Algorithms are included which outline the calculations unique to obtaining a stiffness matrix from the BEM. Keywords: Elastostatics; Coupled solutions; Boundary element; Finite element. (jhd).

Book Time Domain Coupling of the Boundary and Finite Element Methods for Elastodynamics

Download or read book Time Domain Coupling of the Boundary and Finite Element Methods for Elastodynamics written by J. Cox and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the time domain coupling of the boundary and finite element methods for elastodynamics. The study is motivated by the need for a 'silent boundary' in nonlinear problems with infinite domains. Of the boundary element methods (BEMs) considered, formulations based on the Stokes solution appear to be the best suited. The theoretical and numerical bases for the indirect and direct BEMs using the Stokes solution are presented. The integral equation statements of the boundary-initial value problem included a convolution of the time variable and thus appear to be computationally intense. A coupling algorithm which treats the BEM region as a nonlinear boundary condition to the finite element region is presented. The potential of the coupled approach might be realized by exploiting special properties of Stoke's solution and designing the algorithm to use the advances in computer hardware (e.g. parallel processing). Book Coupled Boundary and Finite Element Methods for the Solution of the Dynamic Fluid Structure Interaction Problem

Download or read book Coupled Boundary and Finite Element Methods for the Solution of the Dynamic Fluid Structure Interaction Problem written by Siamak Amini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text considers the problem of the dynamic fluid-structure interaction between a finite elastic structure and the acoustic field in an unbounded fluid-filled exterior domain. The exterior acoustic field is modelled through a boundary integral equation over the structure surface. However, the classical boundary integral equation formulations of this problem either have no solutions or do not have unique solutions at certain characteristic frequencies (which depend on the surface geometry) and it is necessary to employ modified boundary integral equation formulations which are valid for all frequencies. The particular approach adopted here involves an arbitrary coupling parameter and the effect that this parameter has on the stability and accuracy of the numerical method used to solve the integral equation is examined. The boundary integral analysis of the exterior acoustic problem is coupled with a finite element analysis of the elastic structure in order to investigate the interaction between the dynamic behaviour of the structure and the associated acoustic field. Recently there has been some controversy over whether or not the coupled problem also suffers from the non-uniqueness problems associated with the classical integral equation formulations of the exterior acoustic problem. This question is resolved by demonstrating that .the solution to the coupled problem is not unique at the characteristic frequencies and that it is necessary to employ an integral equation formulation valid for all frequencies.

Book A Study of Coupling the Boundary and Finite Element Methods in Two Dimensional Elastostatics

Download or read book A Study of Coupling the Boundary and Finite Element Methods in Two Dimensional Elastostatics written by T. A. Shugar and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report investigates the potential advantage of a combined boundary element-finite element solution approach by examining the behavior of coupled elastostatic domains. A theoretical investigation of coupling the displacement-based finite element method with the indirect boundary element method was conducted and the results were implemented within a microcomputer framework. It is believed that a combined finite element and boundary element computer program could reduce the high cost now associated with nonlinear finite element programs, but it is shown that further work is needed to make the boundary element method more effective. A quadratic, isoparametric boundary element, which would allow a better evaluation of accuracy and cost in the solution of coupled elastostatic problems, should be investigated. Additional keywords: Numerical analysis, Integral equations.

Book The Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method

Download or read book The Scaled Boundary Finite Element Method written by John P. Wolf and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-03-14 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel computational procedure called the scaled boundary finite-element method is described which combines the advantages of the finite-element and boundary-element methods : Of the finite-element method that no fundamental solution is required and thus expanding the scope of application, for instance to anisotropic material without an increase in complexity and that singular integrals are avoided and that symmetry of the results is automatically satisfied. Of the boundary-element method that the spatial dimension is reduced by one as only the boundary is discretized with surface finite elements, reducing the data preparation and computational efforts, that the boundary conditions at infinity are satisfied exactly and that no approximation other than that of the surface finite elements on the boundary is introduced. In addition, the scaled boundary finite-element method presents appealing features of its own : an analytical solution inside the domain is achieved, permitting for instance accurate stress intensity factors to be determined directly and no spatial discretization of certain free and fixed boundaries and interfaces between different materials is required. In addition, the scaled boundary finite-element method combines the advantages of the analytical and numerical approaches. In the directions parallel to the boundary, where the behaviour is, in general, smooth, the weighted-residual approximation of finite elements applies, leading to convergence in the finite-element sense. In the third (radial) direction, the procedure is analytical, permitting e.g. stress-intensity factors to be determined directly based on their definition or the boundary conditions at infinity to be satisfied exactly. In a nutshell, the scaled boundary finite-element method is a semi-analytical fundamental-solution-less boundary-element method based on finite elements. The best of both worlds is achieved in two ways: with respect to the analytical and numerical methods and with respect to the finite-element and boundary-element methods within the numerical procedures. The book serves two goals: Part I is an elementary text, without any prerequisites, a primer, but which using a simple model problem still covers all aspects of the method and Part II presents a detailed derivation of the general case of statics, elastodynamics and diffusion.

Book TWO DOMAIN HEAT TRANSFER STUDIES USING A COUPLED FINITE DIFFERENCE AND BOUNDARY ELEMENT PROGRAMS

Download or read book TWO DOMAIN HEAT TRANSFER STUDIES USING A COUPLED FINITE DIFFERENCE AND BOUNDARY ELEMENT PROGRAMS written by Serap Dikmenli and published by Serap Dikmenli. This book was released on 1988-05-05 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An iterative coupling of a finite-difference boundary layer code "STAN5"[1] and a boundary element code "BEASY”[2] have been used to study two dimensional convective-conductive problems. The coupling method essentially leaves undisturbed the codes of these programs and uses their custom features in their applicable domains. The boundary layer program is used in the convective domain, while "BEASY” is used in the solid domain. Compatibility conditions are established between these domain solutions and an iterative scheme is used until these conditions are mutually satisfied. The indirect communication of compatibility (boundary) criteria between these programs was achieved by two editor/data-transferor like programs. Combined entire package controlled by systems dependent communication program. Numerical scheme used by boundary layer program incorporates a stepwise method. The method presents certain advantages, which makes it suitable for coupling with any other domain method such as the boundary element method. A number of applications have been studied to verify the results for each program as well as the coupling scheme. These include flows over Cylinder inclining surfaces, airfoil and wedge shaped models with internal regions subjected to convective or isothermal environments. The results of the conjugate coupling showed the following: 1) Total job-time reduction due to high convergence rate, and time required for the model preparation. 2) A data storage reduction. 3) A substantial collection of system characteristics. The result of iterative coupling scheme is a useful engineering tool that can be used to study conjugate system consisting of boundary layer and conductive domains of arbitrary shapes.
