Book excerpt: Under contract with the US Army Corp of Engineers, Mobile District, Brockington and Associates, Inc., performed Phase I cultural resources survey within the proposed areas of the Big Escambia Creek Restoration Project, Escambia County, Florida, and Escambia County, Alabama. Background research, fieldwork (archaeological resources survey and site evaluation), laboratory analysis, and report production were completed in compliance with Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 and with regulations implementing this legislation (36 CFR Part 800: Protection of Historic Properties). Our field investigations were conducted between 2 and 6 September 2002. Background research focused on documenting previously recorded significant or potentially significant cultural resources (archaeological resources considered potentially eligible, eligible, or listed on the National Register of Historic Places). Field investigations focused on identifying and evaluating all archaeological resources within the approximately 74-acre project tracts. We recorded and evaluated two archaeological sites 1 ES92 and 1 ES93 during our field investigations. Both sites are historic/modern refuse dumps and are located adjacent to an active railroad. Both areas are located in highly disturbed areas and are not recommended eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and no further archaeological investigations should be required at this location. Cultural resource clearance is recommended.

Book Cultural Resource Management Report of the Phase I Cultural Resources Investigation of a Proposed Flood Control Project Along the Pembina River at Neche Pembina County North Dakota

Floodman and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A phase I cultural resources investigation was conducted for the Neche flood control project in Pembina County, North Dakota, in May, 1986. The project components include a channel cutoff, a borrow area, two new levee sections, and two interior drainage ponds. The study utilized surface inspection, cutbank profiles, subsurface shovel probes, and soil corings, to locate cultural materials. As a result of the inventory, no prehistoric or significant historic sites were recorded. The shovel probes were also negative, indicating a low potential for buried cultural resources. No further archaeological work is recommended at these locations, with one exception. It is suggested that landowner permission be obtained to survey two acres to which Powers was denied access.

Book Cultural Resources Assessment of the Hanford Reach of the Columbia River State of Washington

Download or read book Cultural Resources Assessment of the Hanford Reach of the Columbia River State of Washington written by David G. Rice and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emphasis of the report is on the description of ethnographic, historical, and prehistoric cultural resources affected by the Ben Franklin Dam alternative and the importance of the sites themselves. Major findings include: The project area was traditionally occupied by a Plateau Indian group called the Wanapam. Remnants of the Wanapam people still reside at Priest Rapids. The Wanapam of today are concerned about the preservation of their traditional cemeteries and fishing areas. There are 166 known prehistoric cultural resource sites in the immediate area of the proposed dam that document the prehistory of the Wanapam and their predecessors. There are numerous historical resources present that have not yet been assessed. The history of the Hanford Reach is essentially the history of the Wanapam Indian people, the Hanford-White Bluffs settlers, and the Hanford project reservation. Prehistoric archaeological sites in an unusually good state of preservation represent a variety of settlement types and span at least 5000 to 7000 years. The sequence of prehistoric cultures within the Hanford Reach is similar to that of the larger Middle Columbia Region and represents the Vantage, Frenchman Springs, and the Cayuse phases in stratified sites of the Reach. There are seven National Register sites and archaeological districts within the project area.

Book Additional Cultural Resources Investigations at Selected Portions of the State Road Coulee Pammel Creek Flood Control Project at La Crosse Wisconsin

Download or read book Additional Cultural Resources Investigations at Selected Portions of the State Road Coulee Pammel Creek Flood Control Project at La Crosse Wisconsin written by Robert F. Boszhardt and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a cultural resource investigation of three areas within the State Road Coulee-Pammel Creek flood control project area. The three areas include a downstream section of the mississippi River floodplain at the mouth of Pammel Creek, and two adjacent areas upstream at the mouth of State Road Coulee. In project area I, shovel testing was unfeasible because of the high water table. It is recommended at a qualified archaeologist monitor the construction of the stilling basin in case cultural resources are located. Project area II should be spared disturbance because of the findings of Oneota cultural remains. Much of the sand rise in Project Area III was found to be disturbed from previous scraping. Therefore, this area appears not to contain significant cultural resources, and does not require additional investigation.
