Book A Precision Measurement of the E p e p Elastic Scattering Cross Section Ratio at the OLYMPUS Experiment

Download or read book A Precision Measurement of the E p e p Elastic Scattering Cross Section Ratio at the OLYMPUS Experiment written by Brian Scott Henderson and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements of the ratio of the proton elastic form factors ([mu]pGe/Gm) using Rosenbluth separation and those using polarization-based techniques show a strong discrepancy, which has persisted both in modern experimental results and in re-analyses of previous data. The most widely accepted hypothesis to explain this discrepancy is the treatment of the contributions from hard two-photon exchange (TPE) to elastic electron-proton scattering in the radiative corrections applied to the Rosenbluth separation measurements. Calculations of the hard TPE contribution are highly model dependent, but the effect may be measured experimentally with a precise determination of the ratio of the positron-proton and electron-proton elastic scattering cross sections. The OLYMPUS experiment collected approximately 4 fb-1 of e+p and e-p scattering data at the DORIS storage ring at DESY in 2012, with the goal of measuring the elastic [sigma]e+p/[sigma]e-p ratio over the kinematic range (0.4

Book Precision Measurements of Electron proton Elastic Scattering Cross Sections at Large Q2

Download or read book Precision Measurements of Electron proton Elastic Scattering Cross Sections at Large Q2 written by Longwu Ou and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The electromagnetic form factors are fundamental quantities characterizing the internal structure of the nucleon. Their measurements have provided significant insight into the spatial distribution and interaction of quarks inside the proton. The knowledge of high Q2 form factors proves essential in understanding the properties of quantum chromodynamics in the transition region from non-perturbative to perturbative behavior. It also provides important links to generalized parton distributions, which describe the three-dimensional structure of hadrons at the parton level. In view of the significant theoretical research activities in this field, high quality experimental data are crucial for providing stringent tests and benchmarks to guide and test different models. The form factors can be accessed in experiments by measuring elastic scattering of electrons off a hydrogen target. Experiment E12-07-108, which took place at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, conducted precise measurements of the unpolarized e-p elastic scattering cross section over a Q2 range of 0.6-16.5 GeV2 . This thesis presents the results for 7 kinematic settings with total uncertainties that are 1.5 times smaller than those of the existing data at large Q2 . The proton magnetic form factors were extracted using a parameterization of the form factor ratio obtained from recent polarized e-p scattering experiments. Comparisons to existing global and phenomenological fits are presented.

Book Monte Carol Simulation of the OLYMPUS Experiment

Download or read book Monte Carol Simulation of the OLYMPUS Experiment written by Nicholas Lee Harrington and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The OLYMPUS experiment seeks to measure the ratio of the cross sections for e--p and e+-p scattering in order to determine the magnitude of two photon interactions in lepton nucleon scattering. Measuring this observable to the accuracy required is dependent on a good understanding of the systematic uncertainties associated with the scattering experiment. To accomplish this, a simulation using the GEANT4 library and reconstruction code was written and studies were performed. This paper serves to document the software written and its use in understanding the experiment and some systematic uncertainties.

Book Higher order Effects in the Elastic Scattering of Electrons and Positrons from Lead 208 and Carbon 12

Download or read book Higher order Effects in the Elastic Scattering of Electrons and Positrons from Lead 208 and Carbon 12 written by Andrew Joseph Linzey and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here we report on a precise study of the ratio of elastic scattering cross sections of electrons and positrons from $\sp{12}$C and $\sp{208}$Pb, in an effort to observe and quantify deviations from the predictions of a phase shift calculation of the scattering from a static charge density. Any deviations observed can be attributed to higher-order processes sensitive to the sign of the charge of the scattered particle. The beam energies were $\sim$450 MeV and the angular ranges covered were 26-37$\sp\circ$ for $\sp{12}$C and 26-53$\sp\circ$ for $\sp{208}$Pb. No deviations were observed within the uncertainties of the measurement.

Book Measurement of the Elastic Ep Cross Section at Q2

Download or read book Measurement of the Elastic Ep Cross Section at Q2 written by Yang Wang and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nucleon form factors have been investigated by physicists for decades because of its fundamental importance. The world data of the proton magnetic form factor GMp shows that the measurements have been focused on Q2 lower than 5 GeV2 and it has large uncertainties at higher GeV2. Experiment E12-07-108 aims to improve the accuracy of the e − p elastic cross section to better than 2% over a Q2 range of 7 − 14 GeV2. From 2015 to 2016, the e − p elastic cross section was measured over a wide range of Q2 from 0.66 − 12.56 GeV2 at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Virginia, USA. An unpolarized electron beam was scattered off a cryogenic hydrogen target and the scattered electron was detected in the single arm of the high resolution spectrometers (HRS).

Book High Energy Elastic and Diffractive Scattering

Download or read book High Energy Elastic and Diffractive Scattering written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The developments in high energy pp and p{bar p} elastic scattering in the last 30 years are summarized. The Regge pole model and the geometrical models are reviewed and their agreement with experimental data discussed. The experimental method for measuring the total cross section and the ratio of the real to the imaginary part of the forward elastic scattering amplitude, p, is described. The asymptotic behavior of the total cross section at high energy is discussed in the light of the new results on p{bar p} elastic scattering at (square root)s=1.8 TeV. Predictions from geometrical models and Regge phenomenology are compared with experimental data. The 2-gluon model of the Pomeron by Low and Nussinov is discussed. Future measurements on elastic pp and p{bar p} elastic scattering are discussed.

Here, the measurement is performed with the ALFA sub-detector of ATLAS.

Book BACKWARD K p ELASTIC SCATTERING AND 0 PRODUCTION

Download or read book BACKWARD K p ELASTIC SCATTERING AND 0 PRODUCTION written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A high precision measurement of the momentum dependence of backward −p elastic scattering from 476 to 1077 MeV/c incident momentum has been performed at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. With the same apparatus they have also measured the 0{sup o} production of pions in the reaction K−p →?−?. The forward and backward angular distributions decomposed into partial waves are particularly simple since the Legendre polynomials are either ±1, and the spin-flip amplitude is absent. The forward elastic cross section is well determined through the total cross section using the optical theorem and dispersion relations. The backward elastic cross section has been found by bubble chamber experiments to quite small, generally an order of magnitude smaller than the forward cross section. This is easily understood; the many absorption channels present make the amplitudes largely imaginary so that even and odd parity states cancel in their contributions to backward scattering. For this reason a small resonant amplitude will be expected to reveal itself most prominently in the backward direction. If a resonance has too small an elasticity to be seen in the elastic channel, but has a large branching fraction into?? then it should be observed at 0{sup o} in this reaction.
