Book excerpt: Excerpt from Caesar Borgia: An Historical Romance This too famous leader was the natural son of Alexander VL, whom, to the scandal of the whole Christian world, he had raised to the highest honours which it was in his supremacy to bestow - honours which were far from satisfying the ambition of the recipient, to whom the princes of Italy ascribed the vast project of uniting its shattered sovereignties into an imperial crown for his own head. The great abilities which he had displayed in war, his unmatched subtlety, his courage, which seemed to defy both God and man, the unbounded ambition which he was known to cherish, justly rendered him the terror of Italy. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Young Lovell: A Romance In the darkness Young Lovell of the Castle rose from his knees, and so he broke his vow. Since he had knelt from midnight, and it was now the sixth hour of the day, he staggered; innumerable echoes brushed through the blackness of the chapel; the blood made flames in his eyes and roared in his ears. It should have been the dawn, or at least the false dawn, he thought, long since. But he knew that, in that stone place, like a coffer, with the ancient arched windows set in walls a man's length deep, it would be infinitely long before the light came to his eyes. Yet he had vowed to keep his vigil, kneeling till the dawn... When the night had been younger it had been easier but more terrible. Visions had come to him; a perpetual flutter of wings, shuddering through the cold silence. He had seen through the thick walls, Behemoth riding amidst crystal seas, Leviathan who threw up the smoke and flames of volcanoes. Book Antonina Or the Fall of Rome Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Antonina Or the Fall of Rome Vol 1 of 2 written by Wilkie Collins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Antonina, or the Fall of Rome, Vol. 1 of 2: A Romance of the Fifth Century The book which thus decided my vocation in life, is now presented to the reader in a compact form. It would be idle to say that I do not look back at my first work of fiction with a partiality which I cannot expect others to feel for it. But I am not, on that account, altogether blind to its defects. My) later and better experience shows me blemishes in treatment and in style, which it is now too late to remove from these pages. I can only hope I am justified in believing that there are merits in this performance, which may fairly be set against the faults. Antonina may, I think, claim to be founded on a well chosen subject. The treatment of that subject, however far it may be from rising to the importance of one of the grandest past events which the world has ever witnessed, is at least free from the fatal display of learning which has hopelessly damaged the popularity of the historical romance in these times. And the story (if I may be allowed to say so) has, with all its youthful crudities of execution, a certain freshness and vigour of dramatic interest, which may carry the reader to the end though the characters live in the fifth century, and the events pass in the twilight magnificence of old Rome. This is all I need say, in regard to the presen edition. The critical principles that guided me i: framing the story, with other explanatory matters re lating to details, will be found in the extract from th original preface, which follows these lines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seraphica: A Romance In the youth of the eighteenth century, when France had for nominal ruler the boy king Louis XV., and for actual master the Regent Philip, Duke of Orleans, the province of Artois was big with a problem. The problem was as old as Eve, and consequently very nearly as old as Adam. Other French folk might have taken such a problem more lightly, more philosophically, more humorously, but the folk of Artois were not as other French folk, and were inclined, at times, to insist not a little upon the distinction. Artois had not always been French. Once she had been Flemish, even as French Flanders had been Flemish. The Flemish threads were still tightly twisted in the fibre of her being. If her people were French subjects by law of sword and law of treaty, they were often Flemings at heart, with all the stubbornness, doggedness, and obstinacy that had made their ancestors so fine a fighting race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mozart: A Biographical Romance At the same time, the higher task of the historical to mance has never been lost sight of and pains have been taken to unroll before the reader's eyes a true picture of the history and social circumstances of the epoch which it represents. Such is the object of this book, and the task it has set before it. Perhaps it will a little touch the conscience of the German people, which so gladly raises monuments to its heroes, when once it has allowed them to perish. And so may right many turn over these leaves and listen with loving pleasure to what they shall tell them. All along the road the Australian, who had placed the letter in the breast of his shirt, walked with outstretched arms, lest he should crush the words that it contained. He often stopped to see if anything was stirring in the paper, and put his ear to the letter to listen if the words were talking among themselves. When he went to sleep he placed it in his pouch and put it under his head, in hopes that during the silence of the night he might hear their discourse. Book Cleopatra of Egypt Antiquity s Queen of Romance Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cleopatra of Egypt Antiquity s Queen of Romance Classic Reprint written by Philip W. Sergeant and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cleopatra of Egypt, Antiquity's Queen of Romance The present book may be described as an experiment. I wished to ascertain whether one of the great women rulers of antiquity could not be made as interesting to the general reader as I some of the queens and empresses of more recent times would appear to be, if I may judge by the reception given to their biographies in this country and elsewhere. Among the women of old none seemed a more promising subject than Cleopatra the Great; for, while she is a character of world-wide celebrity and therefore requires no introduction to the most exclusive of readers, she has hitherto been treated almost always as though she were a follower in the train of two of the great personages in Roman history instead of meriting to be considered by herself. Cleopatra appeared to me undoubtedly to furnish a worthy subject for a biography, if sufficient material could be got together to render her life intelligible. One great disadvantage in writing of the Egyptian Queen, as compared with the Empress Josephine, for instance, lies in the absence in ancient days of the host of memoirists, brilliant or otherwise, but always somehow valuable, who make vivid the stories of modern heroes and heroines.
