Book excerpt: Given the increasing number of location-based applications in wireless networks, efficient solution to the problem of source localization and tracking has become more and more important. In this dissertation, we present our works on improving source localization and tracking in wireless networks. First we investigate localization algorithms for the time difference of arrival (TDOA) measurement model. Taking into account the colored measurement noise, we adopt a minmax principle to develop semidefinite relaxation algorithms that can be reliably solved using semidefinite programming with low complexity. The reduction of algorithm complexity is achieved through a simple but effective method for reference node selection among participating measurement nodes such that only a subset of selective time-differences of signal arrival are exploited. Our estimation methods are less sensitive to the source locations and can be used either as the final location estimate or as the initial point for traditional search algorithms. We also consider the more practical time of arrival (TOA) measurement model, in which the source start transmission time is unknown. We present two new methods that utilize semidefinite programming relaxation for direct source localization. We further address the issue of robust estimation given measurement errors and inaccuracy in the locations of receiving sensors. Our results demonstrate some potential advantages of source localization based on the direct TOA data over time-difference preprocessing. Next, we investigate the emitter source tracking problem in which a mobile tracking sensor and multiple anchored sensors cooperate to track and estimate a mobile source node locations. We propose a min-max approximation approach to estimate the location for tracking which can be efficiently solved via semidefinite programming relaxation, and apply a cubic function for mobile sensor navigation. We jointly estimate the location of the mobile sensor and the target to improve the tracking accuracy. To further improve the system performance, we propose a weighted tracking algorithm by using the measurement information more efficiently. Our results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm provides good tracking performance and can quickly direct the mobile sensor to follow the mobile target. Lastly, we consider the multi source localization problem. With nknown source node index of each received signal, we need to identify the source of each received signal as well as estimate the locations. The combinational nature of the receive signal mixing and ordering makes the problem very complicated. We propose two algorithms based on semidefinite relaxation, and provide corresponding refinement method for each algorithm. In addition, we consider the localization problem given ambiguous anchor node measurement. We propose to identify the ambiguous anchor nodes based on the estimated noise amplitude. After identifying the ambiguous anchor nodes, we can remove the incorrect TOA measurements and obtain more accurate location estimation. In summary, the works presented in this dissertation provide several effective approaches to localization and tracking in wireless networks under different measurement models. The proposed algorithms improve the performance with relatively low complexity. As the demands for location based service rise, our methods will have applications in real systems.

In this class of problems, even if the location of a node is known, the wireless links and transmission modalities between two nodes may be unknown. In this case, sensor nodes are used to detect the location and estimate pertinent data transmission activities between nodes. In addition to the broader problem of sensor localization, this booklet studies also specific localization measurements such as time of arrival (TOA), received signal strength (RSS), and direction of arrival (DOA). Book excerpt: [ANGLÈS] Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are used to monitor physical or environmental conditions, and to pass their data through the network to a central location. These networks have applications in diverse areas including environmental, health monitoring, home automation or military. The devices that form the network have limited resources, such as power and computational capacity.\par This thesis focus on the localization and tracking problem, presenting a method that can be used with objects that emit a signature signal.\par The localization step is performed using a mixed-norm minimization to retrieve a sparse vector with a discrete set of locations, whereas the tracking step is performed updating the amplitudes and locations explicitly by using a gradient descent algorithm. None of these methods rely on having the full set of measurements. Therefore, the network architecture is developed having in mind that the methods only use a subset of the measurements, with the objective of reducing the energy consumption of the system, which is one of the main challenges in designing a WSN.\par Focusing on the localization step, clustering algorithms are studied in order to improve the accuracy of the estimates. Concerning the tracking step, feedback of the estimated positions from the FC to the network is added. The feedback is used to instruct the sensors to increase/decrease their sampling rate, and, when mobile, to adjust their position. The goal in doing so is to improve both the energy efficiency of the system and the accuracy of the tracking. Additionally, a method to monitor the error in the tracking parameters is introduced. This method is used to re-start the localization step when necessary.

The signal processing in WSN is different from the traditional wireless networks in two critical aspects: firstly, the signal processing in WSN is performed in a fully distributed manner, unlike in traditional wireless networks; secondly, due to the limited computation capabilities of sensor networks, it is essential to develop an energy and bandwidth efficient signal processing algorithms. Target localisation and tracking problems in WSNs have received considerable attention recently, driven by the necessity to achieve higher localisation accuracy, lower cost, and the smallest form factor. Received Signal Strength (RSS) based localisation techniques are at the forefront of tracking research applications. Since tracking algorithms have been attracting research and development attention recently, prolific literature and a wide range of proposed approaches regarding the topic have emerged. This thesis is devoted to discussing the existing WSN-based localisation and tracking approaches. This thesis includes five studies. The first study leads to the design and implementation of a triangulation-based localisation approach using RSS technique for indoor tracking applications. The presented work achieves low localisation error in complex environments by predicting the environmental characteristics among beacon nodes. The second study concentrates on investigating a fingerprinting localisation method for indoor tracking applications. The proposed approach offers reasonable localisation accuracy while requiring a short period of offline computation time. The third study focuses on designing and implementing a decentralised tracking approach for tracking multiple mobile targets with low resource requirements. Despite the interest in target tracking and localisation issues, there are few systems deployed using ZigBee network standard, and no tracking system has used the full features of the ZigBee network standard. Tracking through the ZigBee is a challenging task when the density of router and end-device nodes is low, due to the limited communication capabilities of end-device nodes. The fourth study focuses on developing and designing a practical ZigBee-based tracking approach. To save energy, different strategies were adopted. The fifth study outlines designing and implementing an energy-efficient approach for tracking applications. This study consists of two main approaches: a data aggregation approach, proposed and implemented in order to reduce the total number of messages transmitted over the network; and a prediction approach, deployed to increase the lifetime of the WSN. For evaluation purposes, two environmental models were used in this thesis: firstly, real experiments, in which the proposed approaches were implemented on real sensor nodes, to test the validity for the proposed approaches; secondly, simulation experiments, in which NS-2 was used to evaluate the power-consumption issues of the two approaches proposed in this thesis.

By applying minimax approximation and semidefinite relaxation, we transform the traditionally nonlinear and nonconvex problem into convex optimization problems for two different source localization models involving measured distance and received signal strength. Based on the problem transformation, we develop a fast low-complexity semidefinite programming (SDP) algorithm for two different source localization models. Our algorithm can either be used to estimate the source location or be used to initialize the original nonconvex maximum likelihood algorithm.

WASNs have recognized potential in many applications that are location-dependent, yet are heavily constrained by factors such as cost and energy consumption. Their “ad-hoc” nature, with direct rather than mediated connections between a network of wireless devices, adds another layer of difficulty. Basing this work entirely on data-driven, coordinated algorithms, the author’s aim is to present location discovery techniques that are highly accurate—and which fit user criteria. The research deploys nonparametric statistical methods and relies on the concept of joint probability to construct error (including location error) models and environmental field models. It also addresses system issues such as the broadcast and scheduling of the beacon. Reporting an impressive accuracy gain of almost 17 percent, and organized in a clear, sequential manner, this book represents a stride forward in wireless localization.

Book excerpt: In this thesis we present LaSLAT, a sensor network algorithm that uses range measurements between sensors and a moving target to simultaneously localize the sensors, calibrate sensing hardware, and recover the target's trajectory. LaSLAT is based on a Bayesian filter that updates a probability distribution over the parameters of interest as measurements arrive. The algorithm is distributable and requires a fixed amount of storage space with respect to the number of measurements it has incorporated. LaSLAT is easy to adapt to new types of hardware and new physical environments due to its use of intuitive probability distributions: one adaptation demonstrated in this thesis uses a mixture measurement model to detect and compensate for bad acoustic range measurements due to echoes. We present results from a centralized implementation of LaSLAT using a network of Cricket sensors. In both 2D and 3D networks, LaSLAT is able to localize sensors to within several centimeters of their ground truth positions while recovering a range measurement bias for each sensor and the complete trajectory of the mobile.
