Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise on Foundry Irons This volume has been prepared at the earnest request of many founders seeking practical information on Foundry Irons and their manipulation in the production of the various lines of castings. It has been the aim of the author to present, in a condensed form, only such matter as is of practical value to the founder and to eliminate as far as possible all theories that have not been established as principles and all laboratory experimental work that has not been fully demonstrated to be useful in actual foundry practice. It has been endeavored to give all useful up-to-date data on the manipulation of Foundry Irons as actually practiced in foundries, by both the old and the new methods; and thus, it is hoped to place before the founder, foundry foreman, moulder and melter such a variety of methods that he cannot fail to obtain desired results under any and all of the various conditions met with in the manipulation of these irons. Semi-Steel, the new foundry iron, has been treated on to the fullest extent, from knowledge gained by the author in producing this metal and from information obtained from practical foundrymen casting it. But by reason of the wide variations in foundry pig the satisfactory production of this metal will be uncertain until, by experimental work with a grade of pig iron used in its manufacture, a standard mixture shall be attained. When this has been done a semi-steel may be produced with as great certainty as to quality as any of the various grades of cast iron. Book The Founding of Metals

Download or read book The Founding of Metals written by Edward Kirk and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Founding of Metals: A Practical Treatise on the Melting of Iron With a Descriptive of the Founding of Alloys In ten years spent at molding, and in the foundry business, and four years in traveling through the United States, in introducing a chemical flux, for iron, I have seen the lack of regularity, and the bad effects of it, in the construction and management of foundry cupolas and furnaces, and the want of a guide or rule for their construction and management. At the earnest solicitation of many foundrymen, I have undertaken the publication of this small work, with a view of throwing some light upon the subject of melting iron, and the construction and management of cupolas and furnaces - a subject that always seems to be enshrouded in mystery. All the theories that I have advanced in this work, are from notes taken from practical observation, while visiting different foundries, in the flux business, and from a chemical knowledge of the laws of combustion and heat, as well as of the laws of chemical affinity of one element for another. By giving a few explanations of causes and effect, I hope to establish some regularity in the melting of iron for foundry purposes. I have also added a few recipes for the forming of alloys, and a general description of all the metals, minerals and gases used in the art of founding, as well as their application, all of which I have endeavored to place before the reader, clothed in popular language, so that all who can read may fully understand this interesting subject; for this reason, I have endeavored to avoid using any of the chemical and technical terms which are usually applied to this subject, as they often have a tendency to embarrass, rather than to enlighten, the reader. Book Modern Iron Foundry Practice Vol 1

Download or read book Modern Iron Foundry Practice Vol 1 written by George Robert Bale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-23 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Iron Foundry Practice, Vol. 1: Foundry Equipment, Materials Used, and Processes Followed With the rapid advances made of late years in most depart ments of the iron and steel industry the foundry can scarcely be said to have kept pace, although the growing tendency towards specialisation, so noticeable in other departments, will undoubtedly affect the iron foundry in the near future, when not only will there be no foundries for general work, but every shop and every workman will be confined strictly to a particular class of work. Moulding machines will be employed in greater numbers and variety, adapted to the work; the purchase of pig iron by analysis will become universal; foundries will be better equipped with suitable appliances for transporting the cupola charges and the molten metal, a system of narrow-gauge tracks extending throughout the entire works, with a more general use of lifts and cranes, advances which have already been made in many of our modern foundries with improved economy, and which, in conjunction, amongst other things, with a more intelligent treatment of mixtures of different kinds of iron, has led to their seldom losing a casting, a habit which is a most important element in the financial success of a foundry. The small iron foundries run in connection with machine shops or steam-engine works are fast disappearing, as it has been found that they could seldom be run profitably and successfully except in the case of large establishments. In these small foundries it was the custom for each moulder to prepare his own sand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book General Foundry Practice

Download or read book General Foundry Practice written by William Roxburgh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General Foundry Practice: Being a Treatise on General Iron Founding, Job Loam Practice, Moulding and Casting of the Finer Metals, Practical Metallurgy in the Foundry, and Patternmaking From a Moulder's Point of View The whole work is light and practical reading, and is intended to give the greatest amount of information on foundry methods, materials, and metals, with the least possible study. A book such as this, although primarily intended for moulders and founders of every description, is also written for draughtsmen, patternmakers, and the engineering profession in general. As a text book it will be most interesting to many students of metallurgy and users of metals, who either cast or con struct. Nevertheless, to some it may show but little new in founding, and probably something which may be objected to. Still, on the other hand, there may be just as many, nay more, to whom the book may, at least, be a source of relief in times of difficulty, and to such, and all that are interested in the abstruse problems of founding in its many phases is this book specially commended. Book Dr Edward Kirk s System of Foundry Practice

Download or read book Dr Edward Kirk s System of Foundry Practice written by Edward Kirk and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dr. Edward Kirk's System of Foundry Practice: Metallurgy of Foundry Irons and Foundry Practice This iron is the strongest of all the foundry irons and has the most marked tendency for chill when suddenly solidified against a cold chill. It was the only iron used for malleable iron and car wheels for many years, but at the present time the entire output of this iron in a year in this country is not sufficient to supply these foundries for one day, and only a few of the smaller malleable iron and car wheel plants favorably located continue to use it exclusively. Others only use about 10 per cent. To tone up their mixture of other irons, while others have been compelled to abandon its use entirely and use coke iron with steel scrap as a strengthener and chill giver. This iron is so strong that it is cast 1n pig of only about two thirds the width of those of coke iron, and the pigs are notched on both sides to facilitate breaking them for charging and melt ing. All the iron cannon used before the introduction of steel cannon were cast with this iron, and it was frequently termed gun metal. This iron, at the present time, is principally used for chilled rolls alone and in mixtures with coke iron. Outside of the Lake Superior-iron region it is principally graded by fracture indica tions. Book The Principles of Iron Founding Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of Iron Founding Classic Reprint written by Richard Moldenke and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Iron Founding The object of this work is the elucidation of the principles underlying all of the processes involved in the art of iron founding. The author has himself often felt the need of such a study, for while a number of books on the foundry exist - some very excellent in their way - these are either a collection of data often very poorly digested, or a series of descriptions of methods of operation without giving all the underlying reasons therefor. The author, himself a foundryman, took up this work long after the completion of his University training, and subsequently occupying a chair of engineering at one of the American mining schools. He therefore knew how unsatisfactory any work performed must be to the thinking man if the reasons for so doing are not fully understood. Ever since 1890, therefore, he has worked in the laboratory and at cupola and furnace seeking the why and wherefore of the things that were done and not done. In the course of this scientific and practical experience, the author gained the cooperation and friendship of nearly all the worlds great foundrymen - many of whom are still with us; and his connection with the foundrymen of America, as secretary of their National organization for a seventh of a century has put him rather closely in touch with the numerous and varied problems met within and without the foundry. In all this active - almost frenzied rush of work, the author having made nearly quarter of a million tons of castings in his time - the great need of a thorough understanding of the principles involved in iron founding was ever present, and as so little was definitely known every new problem when fully worked out meant a definite advance. American foundrymen and metallurgists can properly claim the credit for the modern foundry development, and this because the disinterested workers gave the world the benefit of their investigations. The transactions of the foundrymen's associations and the great iron trade journals are still the repositories of this growing fund of information which nevertheless requires discriminating study to separate the kernel from the chaff.
