This book was released on 2017-07-15 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical Treatise of Modern Screw-Propulsion T the request of Mr. N. P. Burgh, I agreed to write a short introduction to a new work he was about to write on Modern screw-propulsion. It was with some reluctance I acceded to his request; but, on consideration of the great pains and trouble that gentle man has bestowed on his work on Marine Engineering, collecting some of the best examples of modern marine engines, in having them illustrated in the most clear and correct manner, as well as combining in the body of the work numerous wood-cuts of details of construction peculiar to different makers, I felt sure the main importance of his publication would depend more on the excellence of its illustrations than the few remarks which I might have to offer on the subject. After all, the best and most useful information for an engineer, is that which relates to the different views and mode of construction carried out by the prominent manufacturing engineers, who have devoted the best part of their lives and labours in perfecting an especial branch of mechanical study. Those, therefore, who wish for information on the various forms and construction, of the screw-propeller, I would recommend rather to examine, and carefully to compare, the Drawings of the Screws in this work, and results of different vessels, more particularly those of the Admiralty, than to look for anything that is new in this introductory account of the history, various forms, and adaptations of the screw-propeller, which I have contributed to the present work. Book The Screw Propeller

Download or read book The Screw Propeller written by A. E. Seaton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Screw Propeller: And Other Competing Instruments for Marine Propulsion Some thirty-two years ago, when engaged in putting forth the Manual of Marine Engineering, I could not find a single book on the Screw Propeller, or any text book containing such information on it as would enable a draughtsman to get out the leading dimensions, and much less to make a complete design of a screw suitable for any particular ship and conditions. At that time John Bourne's admirable book on the Screw Propeller was not only out of print, but out of date, and I fear no engineer could at any time have designed a screw which would give satisfactory results from what was contained in it. It was, however, many years after that I first saw his work, and my wonder then, as now, is that such a book was allowed to disappear, seeing how much of interest it contained. But perhaps the strongest comment on the knowledge of the screw propeller at that time is in the admission of the then engineer-in-chief of the British Navy, that he had settled the design of those for so very important a ship as the Iris, intended to be the fastest ship in the Navy, by copying that of h.m.s. Himalaya, a ship built in 1854, with the result that the British Admiralty, with all its knowledge and opportunities, with all its records of tests and trials, perpetrated a blunder never equalled in the history of steam navigation, although in the mercantile marine there had been not a few mistakes. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Screw Propellers and Marine Propulsion The propelling screw is, in all probability, a very ancient contrivance. The date of its first application as an instrument of propulsion remains in oblivion, but it is said to have been known in China at a very early period. But it is in its connec tion with steam as a motive power to propel vessels that the following pages are chiefly devoted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Screw Propeller: An Investigation of Its Geometrical and Physical Properties, and Its Application to the Propulsion of Vessels The discovery of the surface of vanishing pressure, detailed in the second chapter, is important, as it affords an explanation of some curious pheno mena which have been observed in the practice of Screw Propulsion. The investigation of the moment of inertia of the screw blade, as given in problem chapter ii., and its application to the determination of the accelerating forces acting on the blade of the Screw Propeller, are entirely new, as well as the results obtained, in the notes at the end of the second chapter, on a subject highly interesting both to the practical Naval Archi teet and the theoretical inquirer. The formulae for the area, pitch, radius of gyration, and moment of inertia of the screw propeller blade, and the table, computed at considerable labour, for their application in practice, will, it is hoped, be found useful to practical men. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Screw Propeller Computer Computer is also of great value, giving at once the results sought, and which if calculated by the use of formulae, would involve a large expenditure of time and trouble. The action of a screw propeller in developing a thrust is relatively complex, and although a full discussion of the problem or of the many theories which have been advanced towards a solution is beyond the scope of this work, in order that an intelligent use of the Computer be made, it has been deemed desirable to give a brief outline, in the simplest possible form, of the leading features of screw propulsion. Book Screw Propellers

Download or read book Screw Propellers written by Charles W. Dyson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Screw Propellers: And Estimation of Power for Propulsion of Ships; Also Air-Ship Propellers John bourne, in his Treatise on the Screw Propeller, published in 1867, states that the screw propeller is, in all probability, a very ancient contrivance. In China it is said to have been known for ages; but in European countries the idea of a screw propeller appears to have been derived either from the windmill or smoke-jack, or from the screw of Archimedes, an instrument much used in some countries for raising water. Seaton, in his work on screw propellers, traces its develop ment from the time when man first used his hands as paddles, through the pulling oar and the scullin g oar, and the modified application of the latter in the form of the screw propeller. Book Papers and Discussions on Screw Propulsion

Download or read book Papers and Discussions on Screw Propulsion written by Navy Dept and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Papers and Discussions on Screw Propulsion: Reprinted From Transactions of the Institution of Naval Architects The main purpose of this paper is to place on record the facts respecting the steam trials of deep-draught twin-screw ships of the Royal Navy, and to compare their performances with those of similar ships propelled by single screws. From this comparison it may be possible to deduce some measure of the relative efficiency, as propellers, of single and twin screws; and the discussion will probably have a practical interest for ship builders and ship-owners generally. The opinion appears to be generally entertained that in deep-draught ships it is preferable to employ a single screw, because any assigned speed can be attained with a smaller engine-power than would be required with twin screws. This opinion is based rather upon a priori reasoning than on actual experience; very few trials having been made with twin screws in deep-draught merchant ships. Moreover, recent experience with ships of war points in the contrary direction; and, after a careful analysis of all the facts which I have been able to collect, my clear conviction is that in vessels of deep draught and large engine-power twin screws have hitherto proved to be more efficient propellers, than single screws. Before proceeding to give the principal data upon which this statement is based, I would remark that although trials on the measured mile may not compare, in scientific accuracy, with experiments like those conducted by Mr. Fronde, yet the broad deductions from a large number of such trials may be trusted. Recorded performances on the measured mile include in one result the net resistance of the ship, the augmentation of the resistance due to the action of the propellers, the efficiency of the engines, and that of the propellers; errors of observation, the influence of tides or currents, and many other circumstances, must also be guarded against It is unquestionable that a separation of these items in the performance, and an analysis of each is the process likely to yield the greatest benefits, and to secure a just appreciation of the real causes of good or bad performance. It is not easy, however, to arrange experiments which shall correctly indicate the value and tendency of each of these constituent parts, as well as eliminate disturbing influences; and for our present purpose it must suffice to have recourse to the results of carefully conducted measured-mile trials, like those to which I now invite attention.
