Book A Treatise on the Nature of Club Foot and Analogous Distortions

Download or read book A Treatise on the Nature of Club Foot and Analogous Distortions written by W. J. Little and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Nature of Club-Foot and Analogous Distortions: Including Their Treatment Both With and Without Surgical Operation, Illustrated by a Series of Cases and Numerous Practical Instructions The non-existence of any work in the English language on the treatment of Club-foot and analogous distortions by division of tendons, may perhaps plead the apology for the appearance of this Treatise. The importance of the subject has been rapidly engrossing the attention of the profession, from the valuable publications of Stromeyer, the numerous reports of the labours of other surgeons which have appeared in the continental periodicals, the recent discussions in the medical societies of this metropolis, and more particularly from the announcement in our medical journals of several successful cases treated by this method. Having in January 1837 published a Dissertation on this subject, and having since possessed ample opportunities of confirming the accuracy of nearly the whole of the opinions then entertained, I venture to hope that this work will be useful in promoting the study and improving the treatment of a class of affections which, until within the last three years, has been to a considerable extent confined to the care of the instrument-maker. Book Congenital Club Foot Its Nature and Treatment

Download or read book Congenital Club Foot Its Nature and Treatment written by Robert William Parker and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Congenital Club-Foot; Its Nature and Treatment: With Special Reference to the Subcutaneous Division of the Tarsal Ligaments To Stromeyer belongs the honour of having introduced subcutaneous division of tendons into surgical practice, and thus indirectly, the credit of having founded on its present basis the principles and practice of orthopaedic surgery. The discovery was introduced into this country, and first practised by one of Stromeyer's earliest patients - Dr. Little - to whose courage and subsequent practice and teaching subcutaneous tenotomy owes much of its present success. It was largely Dr. Little's enthusiasm which helped the new operation over its earliest difficulties and over the opposition it at first met with on the Continent, and in this country also. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Club-Foot: Its Causes, Pathology, and Treatment, Being an Essay to Which the Jacksonian Prize for 1864, Given by the Royal College of Surgeons, Was Awarded The Jacksonian prize offered by the Royal College of Surgeons in 1864 for an "Essay on Club-foot, its causes, nature and treatment," was awarded to the present Essay in April, 1865. In the hope that this work may also prove acceptable to the profession, it is now reproduced in its present form without any substantial alterations; but with such modifications as are rendered necessary by the altered circumstances under which a competitive essay is written, and afterwards published. In writing a competitive essay, the necessity of concealing the Authorship must be a primary consideration; whilst at the same time it is impossible to avoid reference to any original observations and researches which the Author may have made. In the essay when subsequently published as a monograph, the right to claim any such observations and researches must be acknowledged; and in the exercise of this privilege, I have limited myself to making such alterations only as appeared to be necessary. For the purpose of further illustrating the subject, I have added in an "Appendix" a series of cases affording well marked examples of the several varieties of club-foot and contractions described in the Essay. Book The Care of the Foot

Download or read book The Care of the Foot written by William A. Woodbury and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-19 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Care of the Foot: A Practical Text-Book on Chiropody and General Care of the Foot, for Professional and Private Use Style and Comfort are not necessarily synonymous terms, but it is safe to state that a very great deal of the discomfort caused by shoes is not the fault of the style. Many young persons and some not so young find it hard to accept a shoe quite long or wide enough. While many older persons who have realized the folly of their earlier notions, make the less painful and seri ous mistake of selecting shoes that are unnecessarily large. It is the business of this little book to show in a simple, practical manner how the more common ail ments of the foot may be overcome. In New York State a Regent's license is necessary to become a prae ticing chiropodist, so that a working knowledge of the care of the feet is no mean accomplishment for anybody. Just what would happen if the feet were left free and unhampered we do not know. Adam and Eve are pictured with bare feet, but almost every bit of knowledge we have of man shows him with some sort of foot protection - and apparently this is the result of well defined necessity. And not all style, for do we not shoe horses and other animals when pressed into regular daily service? The shoes that are made now here in America are probably more nearly than ever before adapted to the shape of the foot and the use that is expected of both the shoe and the foot.
