Book A Practical Application of a Study of Errors of College Francophone Students Learning English

Download or read book A Practical Application of a Study of Errors of College Francophone Students Learning English written by Louise Godin and published by Centre international de recherche sur le bilinguisme = International Center for Research on Bilingualism. This book was released on 1982 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research on which this study is based found that 50% of the errors in English of French-speaking students were due to interlingual causes and 50% had their source within the target language itself. The question of a correlation between the errors and the teaching method used is explored. Five methods are discussed and evaluated: grammar-translation, direct, audiolingual, transformational grammar, and cognitive code. In each case, a correlation is made of the method with varieties and frequency of errors, and the value of elements of the method is noted. Other pedagogical implications are drawn from the study of the frequency of errors for fifteen types of errors, chosen as representatives of important classes of grammar or as general trouble makers. Rank-ordered lists are provided as well as tables and graphs illustrating the relative frequency of the errors. Some of the conclusions are that negative transfer is an important source of errors and that, with regard to intralingual errors, overgeneralization seems to be the most common cause. To reduce errors of all types and promote communication and fluency, an eclectic method is suggested. It is also noted that some errors persist on all levels even after many years of study. (AMH)

Book Errors in Language Learning and Use

Download or read book Errors in Language Learning and Use written by Carl James and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-02 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Errors in Language Learning and Use is an up-to-date introduction and guide to the study of errors in language, and is also a critical survey of previous work. Error Analysis occupies a central position within Applied Linguistics, and seeks to clarify questions such as `Does correctness matter?', `Is it more important to speak fluently and write imaginatively or to communicate one's message?' Carl James provides a scholarly and well-illustrated theoretical and historical background to the field of Error Analysis. The reader is led from definitions of error and related concepts, to categorization of types of linguistic deviance, discussion of error gravities, the utility of teacher correction and towards writing learner profiles. Throughout, the text is guided by considerable practical experience in language education in a range of classroom contexts worldwide.

Book The Relationship Between the Use of Communication Strategies and Aspects of Target Language Proficiencies

Download or read book The Relationship Between the Use of Communication Strategies and Aspects of Target Language Proficiencies written by Tahereh Paribakht and published by International Center for Research on Bilingualism = Centre international de recherche sur le bilinguisme. This book was released on 1984 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four hypotheses are addressed concerning the relationship of the types and proportion of strategies adopted by the subject groups to the proficiency levels, and the subjects' rate of success and effective use of communication strategies for conveying intended meaning as they relate to proficiency level in the target language. The subjects were 40 Persian students in Canada at two distinct proficiency levels, and 20 native English speakers as a comparison group. Communication skills were elicited by a concept-identification task using concrete and abstract nouns, and involving both oral production and interaction between members of the two groups. A taxonomy of communication strategies was developed, with classification into four communicative approaches (linguistic, contextual, conceptual, and mime) based on the type of knowledge used by the speaker for their adoption. Results also showed that differences between groups in the adoption of communication approach types were minimal except in the relative frequency of use of some strategies, and that the groups differed in success rate at getting meaning across and in their effective use of strategies to communicate abstract concepts. It is concluded that use of communications strategies and target language proficiency level are related, use of communication strategies is dynamic, and that differing surface realizations of speakers' communication skills cumulatively affect success in conveying meaning. Book La classe de conversation en L2

This book was released on 1984 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An annotated bibliography of works concerning the second language classroom, and especially oral language instruction, has four sections. The first addresses general issues in second language instruction: its nature, the component parts, goals, and problems. The second part focuses on the classroom participants, teachers and learners, and the kinds of exchanges that occur in the classroom, group dynamics, the teacher's preparations, the teacher's role in classroom communication, correction of errors, and evaluation of oral expression. The third section contains items concerning the evolution or unfolding of the class from the point of view of theme and mood. The fourth section looks at pedagogical trends and the implications of their application. Annotations of works published in French are written in French; those of works published in English are written in English. (MSE).

Colletta and published by International Center for Research on Bilingualism = Centre international de recherche sur le bilinguisme. This book was released on 1983 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effects of different variables on second language acquisition, specifically the effect of parental influence, were tested on the Gardner (1979) model of second language acquisition. Data were obtained from 68 anglophone students in grades 7-10 enrolled in a French immersion program and also from their parents. A factor analysis of parental data indicated that parental influence can be divided into passive and active components, with the passive component being the early development of language learning attitudes, and the active component being the continued effort to influence attitudes. The data also supported an expanded version of the Gardner (1979) model of second language acquisition. Significant relationships observed include: language aptitude and linguistic outcomes, motivation and nonlinguistic outcome, student attitudes and motivation, active parental influence and student confidence with French, and socioeconomic status and active parental influence. Questionnaires and data analyses are appended. (RW)

Abstract: Abstract Many studies have revealed how one's native language (L1) can influence learners in second language (L2) learning. Due to the influence of the L1, learners are often said to produce an 'interlanguage'. According to different studies at different time in Hong Kong (Webster et la, 1987; Tse, 1988; Newbrook, 1990; Bunton, 1991; Bolton 2005), the frequency of the errors concerning determiners varies a lot. Tse and Bolton found that determiners are high frequency errors in students' work. The present study aims to (i) analyze the interlanguage / transfer errors concerning determiners in English writing of Chinese learners from a secondary school in Hong Kong, (ii) categorise these errors in terms of error types in a systematic and coherent fashion and (iii) attempt to discover whether such errors occur as the result of transfer from the students' L1 or as the result of other factors. The findings suggest that around two thirds of the errors identified are greatly influenced by learners' L1, and that about 20% of the errors in total may be related to other factors intrinsic to the system of determiners in English.
