Book Boundary Value Problems for Transonic Flow

Download or read book Boundary Value Problems for Transonic Flow written by Alexander G Kuz'min and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transonic flow occurs around moving objects as they approach and cross the sound barrier. Serious problems can occur at this point, such as shock-induced flow separation which can cause the aircraft to spin out of control. Another important practical problem is the achievement of higher aerodynamic performance of aircraft at cruise conditions, which leads to considerable fuel savings. The success in application of numerical methods for simulation of transonic flow and aircraft design depends on developments in the underlying mathematical theory. This book presents a breakthrough in the solvability analysis of boundary value problems, which makes it possible to establish convergence of finite element approximations for shock-free flow and to provide a framework for putting the existing numerical methods on a more sound basis. Also, physical aspects concerned with patterns of formation and propagation of weak shock waves are analysed. This contributes to the understanding of the extreme sensitivity of transonic flow to perturbation of freestream conditions. The developed theoretical knowledge base yields promising concepts of the airfoil design and active flow control by airfoil/wing shape modifications or suction/blowing through a perforated surface. Boundary Value Problems for Transonic Flow * Focuses on Computational Fluid Dynamics. * Addresses practical problems, such as airfoil design and flow control. * Presents developments made in the last two decades. In essence this is a much needed monograph for researchers and engineers in applied mathematics and numerical analysis applied to aerodynamics and for algorithm developers in Computational Fluid Dynamics in the aircraft industry. It gives design engineers the underlying mathematical theory necessary for developing new concepts for airfoil/wing design and flow control.

Book A Separation Model for Two Dimensional Airfoils in Transonic Flow

Download or read book A Separation Model for Two Dimensional Airfoils in Transonic Flow written by Frank A. Dvorak and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A calculation method for transonic separated flow about two-dimensional airfoils at incidence is presented in this report. The method is capable of predicting the effects of both leading- and trailing-edge separated flows, although the former is usually associated with a complete collapse of the airfoil flow field, in which case the flow is no longer supercritical. A viscous potential flow iteration procedure provides the connection between potential flow, boundary layer and wake modules. The separated wake is modelled in the potential flow analysis by thin sheets across which exists a jump in velocity potential. These sheets are analogous to vorticity sheets in incompressible flow. The basic potential flow method is a modification of Jameson's full potential method. Calculations for four different airfoils have been compared with experiment for pressure distributions as well as integrated forces. The agreement between theory and experiment is generally good even when shock waves are present. (Author).

Book Boundary Layer Effects

Download or read book Boundary Layer Effects written by Anthony W. Fiore and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 962 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1975 the U.S. Air Force and the Federal Republic of Germany signed a Data Exchange Agreement numbered AF-75-G-7440 entitled 'Viscous and Interacting Flow Fields.' The purpose was to exchange data in the area of boundary layer research. It includes both experimental and theoretical boundary layer research at speeds from subsonic to hypersonic Mach numbers in the presence of laminar, transitional, and turbulent boundary layers. The main effort in recent years has been on turbulent boundary layers, both attached and separated in the presence of such parameters as pressure gradients, wall temperature, surface roughness, etc. In the United States the research was conducted in various Department of Defense, NASA, aircraft corporations, and various university laboratories. In the Federal Republic of Germany it was carried out within the various DFVLR, industrial, and university research centers.

Book Boundary Layer and Flow Control

Download or read book Boundary Layer and Flow Control written by G. V. Lachmann and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 768 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boundary Layer and Flow Control: Its Principles and Application, Volume 2 focuses on the layer of fluid in the immediate area of a bounding surface where the effects of viscosity are substantial. This book is organized into two main topics—boundary layer control for low drag, and shock-induced separation and its prevention by design and boundary layer control. It specifically discusses the nature of transition, effect of two-dimensional and isolated roughness on laminar flow, and progress in the design of low drag aerofoils. The onset of separation effects for aerofoils and wings, shock-induced separation for laminar boundary layers, and shock-induced separation for laminar boundary layers are also deliberated. This volume is recommended to physicists and specialists interested in boundary layer and flow control.

Book Numerical and Phyical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flow III

Download or read book Numerical and Phyical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flow III written by T. Cebeci and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third Symposium on Numerical and Physical Aspects of Aerodynamic Flows, like its immediate predecessor, was organized with emphasis on the calculation of flows relevant to aircraft, ships, and missiles. Fifty-five papers and 20 brief communications were presented at the Symposium, which was held at the California State University at Long Beach from 21 to 24 January 1985. A panel discussion was chaired by A. M. O. Smith and includeq state ments by T. T. Huang, C. E. lobe, l. Nielsen, and C. K. Forester on priorities for future research. The first lecture in memory of Professor Keith Stewartson was delivered by J. T. Stuart and is reproduced in this volume together with a selection of the papers presented at the Symposium. In Volume II of this series, papers were selected so as to provide a clear indication of the range of procedures available to represent two-dimensional flows, their physical foundation, and their predictive ability. In this volume, the emphasis is on three-dimensional flows with a section of five papers concerned with unsteady flows and a section of seven papers on three dimensional flows: The papers deal mainly with calculation methods and encompass subsonic and transonic, attached and separated flows. The selec tion has been made so as to fulfill the same purpose for three-dimensional flows as did Volume II for two-dimensional flows.
