Book Error Estimation and Adaptive Discretization Methods in Computational Fluid Dynamics

Download or read book Error Estimation and Adaptive Discretization Methods in Computational Fluid Dynamics written by Timothy J. Barth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is applied to ever more demanding fluid flow problems, the ability to compute numerical fluid flow solutions to a user specified tolerance as well as the ability to quantify the accuracy of an existing numerical solution are seen as essential ingredients in robust numerical simulation. Although the task of accurate error estimation for the nonlinear equations of CFD seems a daunting problem, considerable effort has centered on this challenge in recent years with notable progress being made by the use of advanced error estimation techniques and adaptive discretization methods. To address this important topic, a special course wasjointly organized by the NATO Research and Technology Office (RTO), the von Karman Insti tute for Fluid Dynamics, and the NASA Ames Research Center. The NATO RTO sponsored course entitled "Error Estimation and Solution Adaptive Discretization in CFD" was held September 10-14, 2002 at the NASA Ames Research Center and October 15-19, 2002 at the von Karman Institute in Belgium. During the special course, a series of comprehensive lectures by leading experts discussed recent advances and technical progress in the area of numerical error estimation and adaptive discretization methods with spe cific emphasis on computational fluid dynamics. The lecture notes provided in this volume are derived from the special course material. The volume con sists of 6 articles prepared by the special course lecturers.

Results and conclusions that will no doubt be useful to engineers and computational and applied mathematicians who are focused on various aspects of non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics. - New review of well-known computational methods for the simulation viscoelastic and viscoplastic types - Discusses new numerical methods that have proven to be more efficient and more accurate than traditional methods - Articles that discuss the numerical simulation of particulate flow for viscoelastic fluids

Book A Review of Posteriori Error Estimation Adaptive Mesh Refinement Techniques

Download or read book A Review of Posteriori Error Estimation Adaptive Mesh Refinement Techniques written by Rudiger Verfurth and published by Wiley. This book was released on 1996-06-11 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wiley—Teubner Series Advances in Numerical Mathematics Editors Hans Georg Bock Mitchell Luskin Wolfgang Hackbusch Rolf Rannacher A Review of A Posteriori Error Estimation and Adaptive Mesh-Refinement Techniques Rüdiger Verfürth Ruhr-Universität Bochum, Germany Self-adaptive discretization methods have gained an enormous importance for the numerical solution of partial differential equations which arise in physical and technical applications. The aim of these methods is to obtain a numerical solution within a prescribed tolerance using a minimal amount of work. The main tools utilised are a posteriori error estimators and indicators which are able to give global and local information on the error of the numerical solution, using only the computed numerical solution and known data of the problem. Presenting the most frequently used error estimators which have been developed by various scientists in the last two decades, this book demonstrates that they are all based on the same basic principles. These principles are then used to develop an abstract framework which is able to handle general nonlinear problems. The abstract results are applied to various classes of nonlinear elliptic partial differential equations from, for example, fluid and continuum mechanics, to yield reliable and easily computable error estimators. The book covers stationary problems but omits transient problems, where theory is often still too complex and not yet well developed.

Book Computational Rheology

Download or read book Computational Rheology written by Robert G Owens and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002-05-29 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern day high-performance computers are making available to 21st-century scientists solutions to rheological flow problems of ever-increasing complexity. Computational rheology is a fast-moving subject — problems which only 10 years ago were intractable, such as 3D transient flows of polymeric liquids, non-isothermal non-Newtonian flows or flows of highly elastic liquids through complex geometries, are now being tackled owing to the availability of parallel computers, adaptive methods and advances in constitutive modelling.Computational Rheology traces the development of numerical methods for non-Newtonian flows from the late 1960's to the present day. It begins with broad coverage of non-Newtonian fluids, including their mathematical modelling and analysis, before specific computational techniques are discussed. The application of these techniques to some important rheological flow problems of academic and industrial interest is then treated in a detailed and up-to-date exposition. Finally, the reader is kept abreast of topics at the cutting edge of research in computational applied mathematics, such as adaptivity and stochastic partial differential equations. All the topics in this book are dealt with from an elementary level and this makes the text suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as experienced researchers from both the academic and industrial communities.

Book Numerical Simulation of Incompressible Viscous Flow

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Incompressible Viscous Flow written by Roland Glowinski and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-09-20 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on finite element-based computational methods for solving incompressible viscous fluid flow problems shows readers how to apply operator splitting techniques to decouple complicated computational fluid dynamics problems into a sequence of relatively simpler sub-problems at each time step, such as hemispherical cavity flow, cavity flow of an Oldroyd-B viscoelastic flow, and particle interaction in an Oldroyd-B type viscoelastic fluid. Efficient and robust numerical methods for solving those resulting simpler sub-problems are introduced and discussed. Interesting computational results are presented to show the capability of methodologies addressed in the book.
