Teenager E.D., the not so artistic, not at all eccentric member of the unconventional Applewhite clan, can't believe the plan her father has hatched to save the family from financial disaster. He’s decided to transform their rural North Carolina farm into a summer camp for creative children. Soon the farm is packed with temperamental artists, out-of-control campers, and an even more out-of-control goat. It's all a little too much for structure-loving E.D., even before threatening notes begin appearing in the family mailbox. Together with Jake Semple--the boy who survived his first year in the Applewhites' home school—she's determined to save the camp and the family from disaster. Like Carl Hiassan’s Chomp, Applewhites at Wit's End combines outrageous humor and the frustrations and joys of being part of a family.

Book Cloacal Contemplations

Download or read book Cloacal Contemplations written by Llyris Wood and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2022-10-11 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly twenty-five years, I have worked with a native wildlife rehabilitation organisation in all aspects of this field. During that time, I have learned a huge amount about native Australian wildlife, humans, and myself. Along with my partners and other wildlife carers, I have rescued, rehabilitated and released many thousands of native animals – giving them a highly valuable second chance. What did I do when a bird was caught by its head in a fence? What happens to a Koala with severe eye disease? How did we extricate a bird of prey from a barbed wire fence? Why DID the Echidna cross the road? Are Bats really foul and evil? What happened to the snake wrapped around a bed post? How on earth do you feed thumb-sized baby birds? This collection of true stories represents how amazing our wildlife is, and how awesome wildlife carers are, plus how lovely the general public can be. The stories give examples of some very funny experiences, and some that are sad – and all are interesting. Embarrassing episodes are also included. Every encounter was educational, individual and never boring. My personal stories embrace numerous different species of birds, bats, possums, gliders, snakes and lizards, plus anecdotes relating to kangaroos, koalas, echidnas and platypus. I have attempted to be as factual as possible, and to dispel myths around many of these creatures. I have drawn the illustrations of the animals myself, in order to give a representation of these species. Throughout the stories, I have emphasised my deepest respect for these animals, and the land they inhabit – on which we live. The challenge of giving them a second chance is complex and demanding, especially the raising and releasing of orphans, and intensely satisfying. In writing these stories, I want to share my experiences and observations with people, and hopefully bring them some joy from their reading.

Book By the Side of the Tracks

Download or read book By the Side of the Tracks written by Roslyn May and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-12-26 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is based on the lives of real people and actual events. This remarkable story imagines the life of one young couple in the heady days of the 1880s railway boom, their struggles in the depression of the 1890s, and their rescue from poverty by the Kalgoorlie gold rush. Rob and Mary were both born and raised by the tracks in railway navvy camps, but Rob wants something better for his children and his beloved Mary. In the cold mountain air of Ben Lomond, he promises her she will have a home by the sea. Mary cares more for the people in her family than for houses but follows Rob from colony to colony as he chases opportunities until the day the work runs out, and the lives of their children are in danger. Rob and Marys quest for the great Australian dream parallels the coming together of the colonies to form the nation of Australia. At the start of the new century, it seems they have finally made it, but dreams can be easily shattered. Told with empathy for the characters and an eye for detail for social history, By the Side of the Tracks is a tribute to the thousands of navvies and their families who built the railways, which made it possible for Australia to become one nation.
