Download or read book Cancer Care for the Whole Patient written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2008-03-19 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer care today often provides state-of-the-science biomedical treatment, but fails to address the psychological and social (psychosocial) problems associated with the illness. This failure can compromise the effectiveness of health care and thereby adversely affect the health of cancer patients. Psychological and social problems created or exacerbated by cancer-including depression and other emotional problems; lack of information or skills needed to manage the illness; lack of transportation or other resources; and disruptions in work, school, and family life-cause additional suffering, weaken adherence to prescribed treatments, and threaten patients' return to health. Today, it is not possible to deliver high-quality cancer care without using existing approaches, tools, and resources to address patients' psychosocial health needs. All patients with cancer and their families should expect and receive cancer care that ensures the provision of appropriate psychosocial health services. Cancer Care for the Whole Patient recommends actions that oncology providers, health policy makers, educators, health insurers, health planners, researchers and research sponsors, and consumer advocates should undertake to ensure that this standard is met.

Book Psychological Aspects of Cancer

Download or read book Psychological Aspects of Cancer written by Brian I. Carr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Psychological Aspects of Cancer: A Guide to Emotional and Psychological Consequences of Cancer, Their Causes and Their Management opens with two essays on the biological basis of emotion/mental-driven body processes and disease. The consequence of such considerations is that since thoughts and emotions can be modulated and changed by health care professionals, psychological counseling should be seen not only as a way to help patients cope, but possibly to influence the disease itself. A unique overview of a key area of cancer care, this important title then proceeds to offer a section on genetic predispositions to cancer and the psychological considerations involved in screening and pre-emptive therapies and decision-making in cancer therapy. A third section deals with the philosophical and religious underpinnings of psychological factors involved in coping with disease state stressors and the roles of hope in coping. The fourth section is an acknowledgement that patients with cancer live in a social context, which often includes a partner and/or caregiver. The fifth section includes several essays on aspects and modalities of care-giving that are designed to help patients coping with their cancer and its aftermath, which increasingly extends for years. An important title covering key aspects of one of the most troubling disorders of our time, Psychological Aspects of Cancer: A Guide to Emotional and Psychological Consequences of Cancer, Their Causes and Their Management will provide the busy practitioner with cutting edge knowledge as well as practical information that can translate into better care for patients with cancer.

Cooper University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology The importance of stress in the development of heart disease is well established, but its role in cancer is only just beginning to be investigated. The scope of cardiac oncology will increase as we con tinue to develop expertise in the detection and management of cardiac prob we intensify efforts to improve survival in patients who at an lems and as earlier time might have succumbed to advanced disease and a fragile cardio vascular system. With our aging population and the developing complexity of treatment modalities, we now recognize that the cardiovascular system is a target of the adverse effects of chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and cancer itself. The goal of this book is to present the scope of modern cardiac oncology as a growing discipline with sophisticated diagnostic testing and treatment modalities. The views of different specialists from different subspecialities are integrated to provide a multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis, man agement, and complications of cancer of the heart and related conditions. The rapidly growing interest in cardiac oncology has largely been advanced through the ready availability of two-dimensional echocardiography, nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, angiocardiography, and other imaging tech niques. This book is divided into four parts. The first appraises cardiac tumors in detail and describes the distribution, pathology, noninvasive and invasive methods for testing, diagnosis, and treatment. This book was released on 2022-08-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION Background of the study Appreciation of relationship between psychological factors and physical disease is not very new. Thomas Sydenham and William Harvey emphasized the role of psychological factors in physical diseases in the 17th century (Taylor, 1980). It would be relevant to discuss in what way how psychological factors mediate in the causation of physical diseases. Psychological-oriented explanations have been forwarded to explain why and how psychological factors play an important role in physical disease. Psychological factors are important in the initiation and promotion of cancer. Although the role of psychological factors in the development of physical diseases have been highlighted for a long time but real attention has been paid in recent times. Medical practitioners are accepting and appreciating the role of psychological and emotional factors that play a vital role in the manifestation of what was earlier considered a purely somatic disease. The area of health psychology integrates the psychological and organic viewpoints to the study of physical diseases. Thus, more research work on psychological correlates of diseases like cancer needs to be conducted. The interdisciplinary approach to the treatment of physical disorders thought to have psychological factors as a major aspect of their causal patterns, broadly known as behavioral medicine (Gentry, 1984) is fast gaining popularity. The field of psychooncology includes professionals from many disciplines including medicine, radiotherapy, psychology, sociology and social work - who seek to incorporate biological, psychological and socio-cultural factors into the domain of causation. Its emphasis however is essentially on the role which psychological factors play in the occurrence, maintenance and prevention of physical illness. Therefore, it is only natural that psychologists have found this an area of major interest and as a consequence, an area referred as Health psychology has emerged. Health psychology is a sub-specialty within the behavioral medicine approach. Since the 1970s,
