Download or read book Observing the Sun written by Peter O. Taylor and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1991-11-21 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Observing the Sun is one of the most interesting and rewarding facets of astronomy to which amateurs can contribute. Few areas of science offer as many opportunities to contribute meaningful data. It is the one branch of astronomy that requires only modest equipment and can be pursued during the day. Peter Taylor is a keen and highly experienced observer of the Sun. In this book he explains in a clear and practical way everything that a telescope user needs to know in order to make solar observations. The author draws on his many years of personal experience as a contributor to the Solar Division of the American Association of Variable Star Observers and to the American Sunspot Program. The book deals with the following topics: historical background, choice of equipment for the safe conduct of solar observations, observations of sunspots, and reporting observations. New techniques, such as electronic recording and the operations of radio telescopes, are included. The level of presentation is understandable to anyone with basic astronomical knowledge and some experience in handling a small telescope.

Book Sketching the Moon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Richard Handy
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-12-11
  • ISBN : 1461409411
  • Pages : 258 pages

Download or read book Sketching the Moon written by Richard Handy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-11 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For anyone artistically inclined, observing the Moon and attempting to sketch or paint it can easily become a passion. The Moon presents a broad array of tone, texture, and form. Capturing this in a painting or sketch at the eyepiece of a telescope – or even with binoculars – develops observational skills, leaves a record of the observation, and can also be a delightful and rewarding pastime. However, the choice of media available is extensive (acrylic paint, oils, pen, charcoal, etc., and even computer art programs), and there is no existing text that fully explains all lunar sketching and painting techniques in each respective medium. This beautiful and graphically rich book fulfills this requirement. It presents detailed step-by-step instructions, in the form of illustrated tutorials for every major medium employed to represent the Moon. It also provides practical advice on how to sketch outdoors at night (not ideal conditions for an artist!). This is easily the most extensive book on the subject of lunar art for amateur astronomers, particularly those observing through a telescope. The diverse features of the lunar surface will attract and entice readers to review the number of different media presented, exciting and inspiring them with the possibilities of learning to depict all of the fascinating aspects of Earth's very own satellite.

Book Return to the Far Side of Planet Moore

Download or read book Return to the Far Side of Planet Moore written by Martin Mobberley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 427 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The result of an exhaustive study of Sir Patrick Moore’s observations of the Moon and planets for more than 60 years, this book is a fantastic companion to the extremely popular, “It Came From Outer Space Wearing an RAF Blazer!” written by the same author. Moore recorded his telescopic observations in his logbooks, which are reproduced and described here in detail, along with his sketches and notes. In this light, the author discusses the factors that caused Moore to switch from lunar observing to planetary and variable star observing. He has also included personal recollections and humorous anecdotes from Moore’s friends and acquaintances, as well as a look at his best loved books. Further chapters describe Moore’s foreign travels and correspondence with those back home. Lastly, the author has not neglected a few of Moore’s most memorable television and radio appearances, which are examined along with a close up of what it was like to visit Moore’s beloved home of Farthings in Selsey. Essentially, this is a book written by popular demand from the readers of the author’s original biography, who craved more of Moore!

Book The Moon

  • Pages : 184 pages

Download or read book The Moon written by Bill Leatherbarrow and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The moon has always been the most obvious feature in our night sky. It is our nearest celestial neighbour, orbiting the earth at an average distance of 384,400 kilometers, and is large enough to display significant detail even to the unaided eye. Our moon has drawn observers since the dawn of humankind, and all people have tried to make sense of the puzzles it poses and the questions it raises. The moon provided our ancient ancestors with one of the earliest means of keeping and measuring time, and many early religions had cults that worshipped it. When it eclipses the sun it provides one of the most awe-inspiring views in nature. In The Moon, celebrated amateur astronomer Bill Leatherbarrow provides expert insight into the history of our study of this compelling astronomical body. Drawing on his own decades of lunar observation, he describes how and why the observation and study of the moon has evolved, particularly in the age of telescopic study. He also offers an overview of current scientific thinking and developments in lunar science since the advent of the Space Age, even providing practical advice on how to make your own observations of the moon. Extensively illustrated with images of the lunar surface taken both from spacecraft and using amateur equipment, this book is an accessible introduction to complex astrophysical concepts that will give all amateur astronomers and anyone fascinated by this natural satellite something to moon over.

Book Pentration Special Edition Updated

Download or read book Pentration Special Edition Updated written by Ingo Swann and published by Swann-Ryder Productions, LLC. This book was released on 2020-11-29 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **UPDATED WITH NEW MATERIAL FOUND IN HAROLD SHERMAN'S ARCHIVES*** Ingo Swann -- renowned psi researcher -- reveals a long-held secret series of experiences with a "deep black" agency whose apparent charter was simple: UFOs and extraterrestrials on the moon and worries about ET telepathic/mind control powers. The agency was so secret that it had no paper trail, and hence no written secrecy agreements. Only the verbal ones, which in Ingo's case expired several years ago. Now, in this era of burgeoning UFO "glasnost," he tells a story of meetings held in a secret underground facility not far from Washington DC, and of being taken to a remote location near the Arctic Circle to witness the expected arrival of a huge UFO over the surface of an Alaskan lake. This book discusses undeveloped human telepathy and contrasts it with the probable existence of fully developed alien telepathy, which may have many different forms. Ingo also explores the fact that we officially know far more than we're admitting about the Moon -- its origins, its atmosphere, its occupants and many other unusual features. Penetration is about one of the means by which we can learn more about those not of this earth (and vice-versa) -- telepathy. Do we have the means to answer some very important questions that many have been asking for quite a long time? Inside this book are the answers to some.PLUS...In a newly discovered missing chapter on his psychic probes of Mars ("9") to Penetration, Ingo asserts that there is a bigger question at play – the question as to “why do mass-consciousness humans, as it were, mass-consciously almost 'conspire' to avoid certain issues, and consistently so?” This inquiry, deep within Ingo’s own awareness, is one that he would ponder until his passing in 2013. He no doubt wished to share this interrogation with the world back in 1998. Thus, while Neptune goes direct in Pisces, removing the veils, and providing an awakening of sorts, we have decided put Ingo’s question to the world by including “9” along with Introductions by Dr. Krippner and Dr. Mitchell, an Afterword by Thomas M. McNear, Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.), and recently discovered documents from Harold Sherman’s Archives in this Updated Special Edition, all within an aptly named section entitled Subscript.

Book Observing Comets Asteroids Meteors and the Zodiacal Light

Download or read book Observing the Moon written by Peter T. Wlasuk and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why write another guide to observing the Moon? That was the question I was pondering as I began this project, having a fine collection of "classic" lunar guidebooks dating back to 1791 in my own library. As a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), member of the American Astronomical Society's Division for Planetary Sciences (AAS DPS), and member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), I am fortunate to know many pro fessionallunar scientists who keep me up to date with developments in lunar scienc- contrary to public perception, lunar science has definitely not stagnated since the last Apollo, No. 17, left the surface of the Moon in December, 1972. I am also lucky to know many amateur lunar observers, who, like me, enjoy actually looking at the Moon with tele scopes and imaging it with a wide variety of devices ranging from regular 35 mm cameras to video recorders and CCD cameras. My friends who study the Moon, whether in their professions or just for fun, gave me several reasons for doing "another" lunar guidebook. First, the last lunar observer's guide of any length was published over ten years ago, and many reviewers noted that it was badly out of date even then.
