Download or read book A Portable Real time Traffic Control System for Freeway Work Zones written by Prahlad D. Pant and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the Travel Time Prediction System (TIPS), a portable, real-time, automated system which calculates travel times between different points in advance of and within a freeway work zone and then makes this information available to drivers through variable message signs. The report first describes the methodology behind TIPS. It then describes the hardware and software development. Implementation, deployment, and results from field tests are reported. Evaluation of TIPS by motorists are presented. The report concludes with recommendations focusing on the implementation of TIPS in a work zone or rural or suburban freeway.

Book Freeway Corridor Management

Download or read book Freeway Corridor Management written by Conrad L. Dudek and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1992 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to state and local traffic engineers, transportation planners, transit operators, law enforcement officials, public information agencies, and others responsible for the transportation elements of freeway corridors. Information is provided on the policies and procedures for freeway corridor management, and descriptions of a number of techniques and practices are presented. Traffic growth and increasing congestion on urban freeways require a comprehensive approach toward managing the complex elements of freeway operations. This report of the Transportation Research Board provides information on freeway corridor management strategies, the components of management, examples of effective applications of the strategies, and benefits of freeway corridor management. The management techniques that are discussed include freeway surveillance and control; corridor street surveillance and control; high-occupancy vehicle facilities and incentives; police enforcement and traffic control; hazardous material and other truck traffic restrictions; alternative route planning; motorist assistance patrols; motorist information techniques; and traffic management for recurrent congestion, for incidents, for special events, and for work zones.

Book Traffic Engineering Handbook

Download or read book Traffic Engineering Handbook written by ITE (Institute of Transportation Engineers) and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get a complete look into modern traffic engineering solutions Traffic Engineering Handbook, Seventh Edition is a newly revised text that builds upon the reputation as the go-to source of essential traffic engineering solutions that this book has maintained for the past 70 years. The updated content reflects changes in key industry standards, and shines a spotlight on the needs of all users, the design of context-sensitive roadways, and the development of more sustainable transportation solutions. Additionally, this resource features a new organizational structure that promotes a more functionally-driven, multimodal approach to planning, designing, and implementing transportation solutions. A branch of civil engineering, traffic engineering concerns the safe and efficient movement of people and goods along roadways. Traffic flow, road geometry, sidewalks, crosswalks, cycle facilities, shared lane markings, traffic signs, traffic lights, and more—all of these elements must be considered when designing public and private sector transportation solutions. Explore the fundamental concepts of traffic engineering as they relate to operation, design, and management Access updated content that reflects changes in key industry-leading resources, such as the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), AASSHTO Policy on Geometric Design, Highway Safety Manual (HSM), and Americans with Disabilities Act Understand the current state of the traffic engineering field Leverage revised information that homes in on the key topics most relevant to traffic engineering in today's world, such as context-sensitive roadways and sustainable transportation solutions Traffic Engineering Handbook, Seventh Edition is an essential text for public and private sector transportation practitioners, transportation decision makers, public officials, and even upper-level undergraduate and graduate students who are studying transportation engineering.

Book Implementation and Testing of the Travel Time Prediction System TIPS

Download or read book Implementation and Testing of the Travel Time Prediction System TIPS written by Prahlad D. Pant and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A freeway construction work zone creates conflicts between vehicular traffic and work activity. The closure of one or more lanes of a freeway section causes a bottleneck on the freeway and reduces the capacity in the work zone, which can lead to conditions that violate the expectations of the motorists. Such a work zone situation is a challenge to one of the main objectives of a traffic management system, that is, to maintain "the safe and efficient movement of traffic." The advance warning area of a traffic control zone represents the area in which the motorists are informed as to what they can expect ahead. The information which is normally provided to the motorists include the type of construction activity, type of lane closure, extent of the work zone, and whether there are available alternate routes to avoid the construction all together. This information is given on static signs, or electronic portable changeable message signs (CMS) by way of static preprogrammed messages.
