Book Polarized Positrons at a Future Linear Collider and the Final Focus Test Beam

Download or read book Polarized Positrons at a Future Linear Collider and the Final Focus Test Beam written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having both the positron and electron beams polarized in a future linear ee− collider is a decisive improvement for many physics studies at such a machine. The motivation for polarized positrons, and a demonstration experiment for the undulator-based production of polarized positrons are reviewed. This experiment (''E-166'') uses the 50 GeV Final Focus Test electron beam at SLAC with a 1 m-long helical undulator to make (almost equal to) 10MeV polarized photons. These photons are then converted in a thin ((almost equal to) 0.5 radiation length) target into positrons (and electrons) with about 50% polarization.

Book Positron Collection in Linear Collider

Download or read book Positron Collection in Linear Collider written by Y. K. Batygin and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 3 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Linear Collider design, the positron capture system includes a positron production target, followed by an adiabatic matching device (solenoid), a pre-linac with solenoidal focusing, and a linac with quadrupole focusing before injection into a positron damping ring. Two schemes for positron production have been studied: (1) a conventional approach with high-energy electron beam interacting with a high-Z target and (2) polarized positron production using polarized photons generated in a helical undulator by a primary collider electron beam which then interact with a positron production target. The capture efficiencies for both schemes are compared. Various parameters affecting the positron capture are analyzed.

Book Beam Dynamics in a Spectrometer for the Polarized Positron Production Experiment

Download or read book Beam Dynamics in a Spectrometer for the Polarized Positron Production Experiment written by Yuri K. Batygin and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proposed experiment E-166 at SLAC is designed to demonstrate the possibility of producing longitudinally polarized positrons from circularly polarized photons to be used in future Linear Collider. The experimental set-up utilizes a low emittance 50 GeV electron beam passing through a helical undulator in the Final Focus Test Beam line of the SLAC accelerator. Circularly polarized photons generated by the electron beam in the undulator hit a target and produce electron-positron pairs. The purpose of the post-target spectrometer is to select the positron beam and to deliver it to a polarimeter whilst keeping the positron beam polarization as high as possible. This paper analyzes positron transmission and polarization in the E-166 spectrometer experiment. The positron transmission has a maximum value of 7% for a positron beam energy of 5.5 MeV, while positron polarization is approximately 60%.

Book Assessing the Merits of Positron Polarization at a Linear Collider

Download or read book Assessing the Merits of Positron Polarization at a Linear Collider written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possibility of polarized positron beams at a future linear collider has created much interest. At the 2001 Snowmass meeting, a study group (designated E3) included a subgroup whose charge was to closely examine the merits, as quantitatively as possible, of this option. The leading issues are outlined here, and a few physics examples are given. The deciding issues are, however, likely to be technological, as positron polarization would to be a very complex and expensive addition to the accelerator.

Book Capture and Polarization of Positrons in a Proposed NLC Polarized Positron Source

Download or read book Capture and Polarization of Positrons in a Proposed NLC Polarized Positron Source written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A proposed NLC polarized positron source utilizes a 150 GeV electron beam passing through a helical undulator. The resulting flux of polarized photons is converted in a thin positron production target. Spin polarized positrons are captured using a high field flux concentrator followed by an accelerator section immersed in a solenoidal field. Positron tracking through the accelerating and focusing systems is done together with integration of spin precession. Optimization of the collection system is performed to insure high positron yield into the 6-dimensional acceptance of the subsequent pre-damping ring while keeping the high value of positron beam polarization.

Book Physics And Experiments With Linear Colliders Lcws95 Proceedings Of The Workshop In 2 Volumes

Download or read book Physics And Experiments With Linear Colliders Lcws95 Proceedings Of The Workshop In 2 Volumes written by Yoshiaki Fujii and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1996-08-22 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collider experiments have become essential to studying elementary particles. In particular, lepton collisions such as e⁺e⁻ are ideal from both experimental and theoretical points of view, and are a unique means of probing the new energy region, sub-TeV to TeV. It is a common understanding that a next-generation e⁺e⁻ collider will have to be a linear machine that evades beam-energy losses due to synchrotron radiation. In this book, physics feasibilities at linear colliders are discussed in detail, taking into account the recent progress in high-energy physics.

Book Undulator Based Production of Polarized Positrons A Proposal for the 50 GeV Beam in the FFTB

Download or read book Undulator Based Production of Polarized Positrons A Proposal for the 50 GeV Beam in the FFTB written by J. Turner and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The full exploitation of the physics potential of future linear colliders such as the JLC, NLC, and TESLA will require the development of polarized positron beams. In the proposed scheme of Balakin and Mikhailichenko [1] a helical undulator is employed to generate photons of several MeV with circular polarization which are then converted in a relatively thin target to generate longitudinally polarized positrons. This experiment, E-166, proposes to test this scheme to determine whether such a technique can produce polarized positron beams of sufficient quality for use in future linear colliders. The experiment will install a meter-long, short-period, pulsed helical undulator in the Final Focus Test Beam (FFTB) at SLAC. A low-emittance 50-GeV electron beam passing through this undulator will generate circularly polarized photons with energies up to 10 MeV. These polarized photons are then converted to polarized positrons via pair production in thin targets. Titanium and tungsten targets, which are both candidates for use in linear colliders, will be tested. The experiment will measure the flux and polarization of the undulator photons, and the spectrum and polarization of the positrons produced in the conversion target, and compare the measurement results to simulations. Thus the proposed experiment directly tests for the first time the validity of the simulation programs used for the physics of polarized pair production in finite matter, in particular the effects of multiple scattering on polarization. Successful comparison of the experimental results to the simulations will lead to greater confidence in the proposed designs of polarized positrons sources for the next generation of linear colliders. This experiment requests six-weeks of time in the FFTB beam line: three weeks for installation and setup and three weeks of beam for data taking. A 50-GeV beam with about twice the SLC emittance at a repetition rate of 30 Hz is required.
