Book A Poetry Primer Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Poetry Primer Classic Reprint written by Gerald Sanders and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Poetry Primer This book is designed to help students in the early stages of their study, when poetry is like something behind locked doors for which they have no key. It is meant to be helpful particularly in introductory courses Where considerable poetry is read, and where, without devoting too much time to this, students are required to know something of the elements Of prosody. It is written simply, therefore, in the hope that once it is in the hands of students, they can teach themselves; it makes little effort to consider matters of chief interest to the advanced student and the critic; and it intro duces no innovations. It might be well if all the teachers and critics and writers of poetry would meet and settle once for all the ques tions of poetic and prosodic terminology, probably scrapping the present terminology, and even the present system of teaching prosody. But in view of the swiftness with which proponents and opponents of any small change rush to battle, it is unlikely that such a convention will be held this year; and until it is held, it seems best to employ the terms used for some hundreds of years Without material damage to the quality of English poetry or to its appreciation by those not writing it. Experience shows that many students need to know not only something about rhythm and metre and stanzas and feet, but how to read a poem intelligently. I have, therefore, added a very ele mentary section, included so far as I know in no handbook of this sort, on how to study the content of a poem. And I have tried to deal as fully as possible in so short a work with such troublesome forms as the sonnet, the ode, and free verse, in order to make these as clear as possible to students. For helpful comments on the manuscript, I am indebted to Professors Alma Blount, C. F. Harrold, and H. W. Reninger; and for permission to use some of their verse to illustrate a number of forms, to a number Of my former students. Book A Primer of Burns Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Primer of Burns Classic Reprint written by Geo; W. T. McGown and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Burns There is good reason to hope that the Doric is about to become a subject of more systematic study than ever before. A goodly number of literary and educated people throughout Scotland have a strong opinion that their native tongue - so rich in the best of song and poem - should have a place in the curriculum of their own Scottish Universities. To hasten on such a desirable step, or, at least, to support the hands of those who may make an effort to see this realised, no body of the people can do more than the Teachers of Scotland. This is said with all due deference to existing Clubs and Societies. In educative value, next to studying with a class a special poet each year, so as to aim at as much completeness as circumstances will allow, is the plan of selecting the cream of poetry as contained in short, choice pieces. Long "screeds" of rhyme may serve as exercise and training for the memory; but there is more likelihood that the mental possession of noble thoughts set in choice words - even though imparted in lines and couplets and stanzas - will do more good as mental training now, and will provide the mind with a store of rich thought that it can fall back upon for pleasure and profit in after years. Such may be argument enough for the shortness of the selected pieces. It has long been the practice of the subscriber to take up a poem of our National Poet each year, along with, of course, some other suitable piece, or pieces, from the English Classics. Book The Music Primer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Music Primer Classic Reprint written by Frederic Herbert Ripley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Music Primer The object of this work is to impart the power to read vocal music. The plan is similar in every respect to a graded series of literary readers. Music, in fact, is a language, and should be learned just as any other language is learned, by using it. As the philosophy of language, or gram mar, can only be taught when the language is well known, so the technical ities of music must come late in the course. Everything in this system tends to cultivate the power to do; yet a careful presentation of theoretic elements induces a growing independence on the part of the pupil from the beginning. Care is taken to make the pupil familiar with musical effects before they are named; for instance, the words major and minor are admitted only when the effects which these words represent are perfectly familiar to the ear. All non-musical and unscientific representations of music, such as diagrams, figures, circles, etc., are avoided. Experience proves that the full staff representation when properly presented is the simplest possible. Any representation to the eye of effects which are known only through the ear is of necessity purely arbitrary, there being no natural relation whatever between the thing and its sign. Hence the assumed superiority of some modern devices is purely imaginary. The songs are such as a child who has accomplished the preceding exercises can actually read, and are, therefore, of a thoroughly educational character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primer of English Verse: Chiefly in Its AEsthetic and Organic Character These examples will suffice to Show the character of Chaucer's alliterations. The greater part of them may have been written unconsciously by the poet; his sense of melody Often attracting words with the same initial or internal consonants, as well as asso nantal words, - all contributing, more or less, to the general melody and harmony. Feeling, according to its character, weaves its own vowel and consonantal texture. It was Spenser who first, to any extent, exhibited organic alliteration. Alliteration, as employed in anglo-saxon poetry,1 and in the 'vision of William concerning Piers the Plowman, ' being, as it is, constantly kept up, is generally a mere mechanical device; and where it is organically employed, it loses, in consequence of its constant use, its effect as an exceptional consonantal melody. • Author : David Hawkes
  • Publisher : New York Review of Books
  • Release : 2016-06-21
  • ISBN : 9629968991

Download or read book A Little Primer of Tu Fu written by David Hawkes and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The deepest and most varied of the Tang Dynasty poets, Tu Fu (Du Fu) is, in the words of David Hinton, the “first complete poetic sensibility in Chinese literature.” Tu Fu merged the public and the private, often in the same poem, as his subjects ranged from the horrors of war to the delights of friendship, from closely observed landscapes to remembered dreams, from the evocation of historical moments to a wry lament over his own thinning hair. Although Tu Fu has been translated often, and often brilliantly, David Hawkes’s classic study, first published in 1967, is the only book that demonstrates in depth how his poems were written. Hawkes presents thirty-five poems in the original Chinese, with a pinyin transliteration, a character-by-character translation, and a commentary on the subject, the form, the historical background, and the individual lines. There is no other book quite like it for any language: a nuts-and-bolts account of how Chinese poems in general, and specifically the poems of one of the world’s greatest poets, are constructed. It’s an irresistible challenge for readers to invent their own translations.

Book The Craft of Poetry

What should readers notice and look out for? Poet Lucy Newlyn demystifies the principles of the form, effortlessly illustrating key approaches and terms—all through her own original verse. Each poem exemplifies an aspect of poetic craft—but read together they suggest how poetry can evoke a whole community and its way of life in myriad ways. In a series of beautiful meditations, Newlyn guides the reader through key aspects of poetry, from sonnets and haiku to volta and synecdoche. Avoiding glosses and notes, her poems are allowed to speak for themselves, and show that there are no limits to what poetry can communicate. Newlyn’s timeless verse will appeal to lovers of poetry as well as to practitioners, teachers, and students of all ages. Onomatopoeia You’d play here all day if you had your way— near the stepping-stones, in the clearest of rock-pools, where water slaps and slips; where minnows dart, and a baby trout flop-flips.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Preludes: A Collection of Poems The Poet's Dream. I Dreamt I wander'd in a fairy bower. Jewell'd with all the painted things that grow, And, on my way, full many a queenly flower I pass'd, but heeded not for all its glow. So many beauties gather'd in that spot, My aching sense grew dull, and, gazing, I saw not. I turn'd me from them, languid and oppress'd: And, from the dazzling splendor of the sight Seeking relief, my eye at last did rest Upon a rose-bush, autumn rifled quite Of all its summer glories - all, save one - One virgin, ling'ring bud, that blush'd there all alone. It blush'd there all alone, 'mid em'rald sheen Hid like a violet; its conscious pride, Half check'd for youthful shame at being seen, With tinge of maiden coyness deep had dyed Those fair lips, demi-parted to receive The farewell kiss of Sol, - the tears of dewy eve. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book A Primer of Browning Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Primer of Browning Classic Reprint written by Edward Berdoe and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of Browning There are few works in our literature which so well repay careful and loving study as the poems of Robert Browning. To know Browning well is to have acquired a liberal education. The British public have taken a long time in finding this out, but it is now recognized that his claims cannot be neglected by those who would think high thoughts and commune with noble souls. It has been the fashion to call the poet obscure, analytical and introspective, and this by those who have never taken the pains to learn really what he is. The truth is, he frequently deals with subjects that in their nature are profound; but though he treats obscure matters deeply, it is not true to say that he deals with deep subjects obscurely. As a poet he is very varied. He has written many exquisite love poems, some charming lyrics, many dramatic monologues, and has told the story of a crowd of half-forgotten persons more or less important in their time and way. The aim of this Primer is to indicate briefly the subjects treated in the different poems, and to indicate in plain language their main outlines. Book Poetry as Survival

Download or read book Poetry as Survival written by Gregory Orr and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2010-12-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for general readers and for students and scholars of poetry, Poetry as Survival is a complex and lucid analysis of the powerful role poetry can play in confronting, surviving, and transcending pain and suffering. Gregory Orr draws from a generous array of sources. He weaves discussions of work by Keats, Dickinson, and Whitman with quotes from three-thousand-year-old Egyptian poems, Inuit songs, and Japanese love poems to show that writing personal lyric has helped poets throughout history to process emotional and experiential turmoil, from individual stress to collective grief. More specifically, he considers how the acts of writing, reading, and listening to lyric bring ordering powers to the chaos that surrounds us. Moving into more contemporary work, Orr looks at the poetry of Sylvia Plath, Stanley Kunitz, and Theodore Roethke, poets who relied on their own work to get through painful psychological experiences. As a poet who has experienced considerable trauma--especially as a child--Orr refers to the damaging experiences of his past and to the role poetry played in his ability to recover and survive. His personal narrative makes all the more poignant and vivid Orr's claims for lyric poetry's power as a tool for healing. Poetry as Survival is a memorable and inspiring introduction to lyric poetry's capacity to help us find safety and comfort in a threatening world.
