Book Samson and the Pirate Monks

Download or read book Samson and the Pirate Monks written by Nate Larkin and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2007-02-18 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With no-holds-barred honesty and poignant storytelling, Nate Larkin introduces a model of community and friendship that is reinvigorating men's ministry across the country, a model he calls The Samson Society. Too many men see the biblical hero Samson as their model for manhood--a rugged individualist of the highest order. Yet, Samson's solitary successes were eventually overcome by moral weaknesses. Larkin, through the story of his own past and the stories of those in The Samson Society, offers a radical, refreshing alternative.

Book Samson Agonistes and Other Poems

Download or read book Samson Agonistes and Other Poems written by John Milton and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2013-12-10 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Samson Agonistes, Milton’s last great work, he addresses questions that pressed insistently on the imagination of all who were unhappy with the changes wrought by the Restoration. How do we respond to the experience of defeat, and to fears of having been abandoned by the divine? How do we know when our actions accord with divine will, or when they are fueled instead by our fallen desires and weaknesses? At what point do accommodation and compromise with an enemy become a failure of will? What constitutes true heroism? To what extent is violence justified in the cause of freedom? In this dramatic poem, Milton abandons the regularly maintained blank verse of Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained and employs varying line lengths, mixes blank verse with lyric rhyme, and takes such liberties with scansion that the poem often has the feel of modern “free verse.” To many scholars, the poetry of Samson Agonistes seems the culminating literary expression of a poet who had already demonstrated his mastery of traditional forms and felt free to abandon convention to create the poetic effects he desired. In addition to Samson Agonistes, this volume includes a selection of Milton’s best-known short poems (also taken from The Broadview Anthology of British Literature). The biblical material concerning Samson is also included in an appendix.

Book The Quinn Moosebroker Mysteries

Download or read book The Quinn Moosebroker Mysteries written by Michael Friedman and published by Mockingbird-Books. This book was released on 2014-12-11 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detective Quinn Moosebroker arrived in the sleepy town of Clearview Terrace a broken man. A shoot out in the line of duty killed his partner and a second bullet ended his career with the Allentown Police Department. In his forced retirement, he lives with his daughter Kate and has become a Sunday painter. His one activity is the restoration of a 1946 wood-paneled Chrysler Town and Country and an occasional trip to the local used book shop run by Blake Knightly. Kate sets her father up on a blind date with the widow Betty Atwood to see a local play at a community theater. At the end of act one Pepper Bishop, owner of the Second Street Mystery Playhouse is murdered. Betty Atwood starts the beginning of the best first date in history and the best thing that has happened to her in the years since her husband's passing. The couples casual encounter quickly develops into a partnership that unveils a pornographers scheme to sell photographs of non-consenting Clearview Terrace ladies to a big city true-detective publisher. During Quinn and Betty's investigation Quinn bumps heads with the local authority in the form of Detective DeLaMonte a renegade dismissed from the New Orleans Police department. Eleanor Pennyworth finds Quinn Moosebroker's name in an address book with the word 'trusted' written in pencil. When her partner is found dead in his Clearview Terrace home, she calls in Quinn to investigate a missing literary manuscript known as Night of the Falling. Quinn and Betty find themselves in a world of book people and rare book treasures. Quinn relays a conversation about a young man's dream of murder to Betty he overheard on a quiet Saturday afternoon at the local barbershop. The story hits Betty so hard that while she tried to sleep that night she received a visitor in the form of a little boy at the foot of her bed. The haunting guest and Quinn's growing loyalty to Betty lead them to a government cover-up at a North Carolina Marine Corp Camp and to an aging Marine and his estranged wife. On the return home, along a cold dark southern highway, Betty adjusts the Town and Country's radio and a broadcast that correctly describes the night he was shot and his partner was killed sends them on a detour deep into a steel town and Quinn's past. The investigation undoes Dolan Ó Braonáin a local crime boss and exposes the far reaching tentacles of his organization. An innocent trip to the grand opening of a Clearview Terrace thrift store and an unexpected find send this detective duo skirting along the edges of stolen Nazi loot as they do their best to find the rightful owner of a piece of art that has survived all that has come its way. Clearview Terrace will never be the same.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joseph Wittreich reveals Samson to be an intensely political work that reflects the heroic ambitions and failings of the Puritan Revolution and the tragic ambiguities of the era. He sees in the work not the purveyance of Medieval and early Renaissance typological associations but an interrogation of them and a consequent movement away from them. Originally published in 1986. Download or read book Black Samson written by Jeremy Schipper and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-06-04 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Harriet Tubman or Martin Luther King was identified with Moses, African Americans identified those who challenged racial oppression in America with Samson. In Black Samson: The Untold Story of an American Icon, Nyasha Junior and Jeremy Schipper tell the story of how this biblical character became an icon of African American literature. Along the way, Schipper and Junior introduce readers to a cast of historical characters -- many of whom became American icons themselves -- including Fredrick Douglass, Ida B. Wells, Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, Malcolm X, Huey P. Newton and others. From stories of slave rebellions to the Harlem Renaissance to the civil rights era and the Black Power movement, invoking the biblical character of Samson became a powerful way for African American intellectuals, activists, and artists to voice strategies and opinions about race relations in America. As this provocative book reveals, the story of Black Samson became the story of our nation's contested racial history.

Book That Invincible Samson

Download or read book That Invincible Samson written by Watson Kirkconnell and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1964-12-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work examines the more than one hundred analogues of Samson Agonistes, about half of them written earlier than Milton's drama. The author has gone back in every instance to primary sources, and examined all treatments of Milton's theme, in all languages, for their intrinsic interest and merit. While he has not entirely omitted a discussion of source relationships, his concern here has been chiefly with analogues. In Part I of the book the author compares five pre-Miltonic works, which he has translated, in whole or in part, from the original Latin, Dutch, and Italian. In Part II, a descriptive catalogue, he comments on the significance, to Miltonists and to the general reader, of the analogues. He traces the purposes beyond mere theatre in the different versions of the play: versions prior to 1670 contain many overtones of personal, national, or theological significance, while, after 1671, there is a rapid shift away from religious or moral presentation to a more strictly theatrical entertainment. Dr. Kirkconnell believes that this shift in interest has obscured from most of the critics of later centuries the tone and tradition of this great drama. The nineteenth and twentieth centuries have seen dozens of versions of the old play theme, nearly all of them wholly disregarding any inner drama of the spirit, and stressing extrovert aspects of Strength, Beauty, and Sex. As a whole, the analogues will reveal the variety that playwrights have found possible in the ancient theme. The author concludes that Milton's treatment is the noblest ever written, surpassing all others in literary quality and in the nature of the dramatic conflict it describes.
