Book Eugenics at the Edges of Empire

Download or read book Eugenics at the Edges of Empire written by Diane B. Paul and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-16 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the history of eugenics in four Dominions of the British Empire: New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and South Africa. These self-governing colonies reshaped ideas absorbed from the metropole in accord with local conditions and ideals. Compared to Britain (and the US, Germany, and Scandinavia), their orientation was generally less hereditarian and more populist and agrarian. It also reflected the view that these young and enterprising societies could potentially show Britain the way — if they were protected from internal and external threat. This volume contributes to the increasingly comparative and international literature on the history of eugenics and to several ongoing historiographic debates, especially around issues of race. As white-settler societies, questions related to racial mixing and purity were inescapable, and a notable contribution of this volume is its attention to Indigenous populations, both as targets and on occasion agents of eugenic ideology.

Book THE FERTILITY OF THE UNFIT

Download or read book THE FERTILITY OF THE UNFIT written by William Allan Chapple and published by BoD - Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-02-11 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Fertility of the Unfit" is a book written by William Allan Chapple. Published in 1903, the book reflects the eugenics movement that gained prominence during the early 20th century. Eugenics was a controversial social and scientific movement that aimed to improve the genetic quality of the human population through selective breeding and sterilization. In "The Fertility of the Unfit," Chapple likely explores and discusses the theories and ideas related to eugenics. The term "unfit" in this context often referred to individuals considered less desirable from a eugenic perspective, including those with perceived physical or mental disabilities. It's important to note that the ideas and practices associated with eugenics have been widely discredited and condemned due to their unethical and discriminatory nature. The eugenics movement has been criticized for promoting harmful and discriminatory policies, including forced sterilization and other forms of reproductive control. Understanding historical perspectives on eugenics can provide insights into the ethical challenges associated with scientific and social movements of the past.

Book Forensic Medicine and Death Investigation in Medieval England

Download or read book Forensic Medicine and Death Investigation in Medieval England written by Sara M. Butler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: England has traditionally been understood as a latecomer to the use of forensic medicine in death investigation, lagging nearly two-hundred years behind other European authorities. Using the coroner's inquest as a lens, this book hopes to offer a fresh perspective on the process of death investigation in medieval England. The central premise of this book is that medical practitioners did participate in death investigation – although not in every inquest, or even most, and not necessarily in those investigations where we today would deem their advice most pertinent. The medieval relationship with death and disease, in particular, shaped coroners' and their jurors' understanding of the inquest's medical needs and led them to conclusions that can only be understood in context of the medieval world's holistic approach to health and medicine. Moreover, while the English resisted Southern Europe's penchant for autopsies, at times their findings reveal a solid understanding of internal medicine. By studying cause of death in the coroners' reports, this study sheds new light on subjects such as abortion by assault, bubonic plague, cruentation, epilepsy, insanity, senescence, and unnatural death.
