Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plea for Spelling Reform We may further note here that in many other positions where the conventional long sounds of the vowels are supposed to be regularly used we frequently find the short ones. Thus, if we have change and range, we have also flange paste and waste have caste for an ill-assorted fellow bind and pint must keep company with wind and mint; toll and droll with doll; while torn, port, and most are readily confronted with corn, short, and cost. Thus no certain means are provided in thousands of cases to mark whether a vowel-sign represents the conventional long or the short sound, quite different in nature as those sounds are, and the spelling-books only partially surmount the difficulty by adopting a plan of syllabication which is often in conflict with etymology and phonetics. If a word - a spoken word - cannot be analysed into its several elements or sounds, and if these sounds are not the letters by which the word is known, such word, when written, is to all intents and purposes a hieroglyph, and we might as well draw some Egyptian hieroglyph, and say, That figure stands for such a word. When we speak the word though we utter two sounds, a vocal th, which I will represent by d, and the vowel 0. Why should we take the trouble to write six letters to re present this word, when two letters would answer the pur pose But our 0 must be a true 0, one that represents the sound it has in though on all occasions. For this long, Open vowel, a slight modification of o is introduced, thus e, and.the old letter is reserved for the sound which it commonly represents, namely, the short vowel in not. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Spelling and Spelling Reform The subject Of spelling reform is not, strictly Speaking, a soul-stirring one, nor is any possible treatment Of it likely to contribute to the gayety Of nations. If any Of the chapters contained in the present volume be Of the slightest in terest in itself, that on the orthographic situa tion is assuredly not the one. On the other hand, if there be anything Of value in the work, that same chapter has, as I look at it, far the most value. There is in it, indeed, nothing original. The numerous facts it contains are to be found scattered up and down the pages Of various volumes - particularly in the intro ductions to the larger dictionaries, and in orthographic and orthoepic essays produced at various periods. But SO far as I know, this is the first attempt ever made to collect and com bine and, above all, to put in a form, easily com prehensible by the general reader, the widely scattered facts which go to Show the precise character and characteristics Of English orthog raphy, and to bring out with distinctness the real nature Of the deep-seated disease under which it labors. At all events, Whether or not I have been anticipated in the presentation Of these facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The Problem of Spelling Reform Classic Reprint written by W. W. Skeat and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Spelling Reform At this point I pause awhile, in order to point out two great advantages that would certainly result from the introduction of even such small instalments of spelling reform as those to which I have just drawn attention. The first is that these partial reforms would necessarily involve the disuse of a large number of useless letters. In this way more matter would be got into a page, and some labour in the composi tion of the type would be saved; and as this would happen in every case, whether the book be small or great, it might very easily save every printer and publisher a considerable sum of money. It would not be surprising if the aggregate saving, in the course of a year, throughout the British Empire, were to amount to some thousands of pounds. Every one would gain by it; the writer would have fewer letters to write, the printer would have fewer to print, and the reader would have fewer to spell and read. Many ambiguities would disappear, and the written record would exhibit a closer approximation to the sounds which it professes to represent. The second is that the task of learning to read would be consider ably simplified, and the time taken to achieve that task would be considerably shortened, to the equal delight and profit both of teacher and pupil. In this case there can be no doubt at all that the sums thus saved to the nation would be very considerable.
