Book Religion and Relationships in Ragged Schools

Download or read book Religion and Relationships in Ragged Schools written by Laura M. Mair and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the interaction between teachers and scholars, this book provides an intimate account of "ragged schools" that challenges existing scholarship on evangelical child-saving movements and Victorian philanthropy. With Lord Shaftesbury as their figurehead, these institutions provided a free education to impoverished children. The primary purpose of the schools, however, was the salvation of children’s souls. Using promotional literature and local school documents, this book contrasts the public portrayal of children and teachers with that found in practice. It draws upon evidence from schools in Scotland and England, giving insight into the achievements and challenges of individual institutions. An intimate account is constructed using the journals maintained by Martin Ware, the superintendent of a North London school, alongside a cache of letters that children sent him. This combination of personal and national perspectives adds nuance to the narratives often imposed upon historic philanthropic movements. Investigating how children responded to the evangelistic messages and educational opportunities ragged schools offered, this book will be of keen interest to historians of education, emigration, religion, as well as of the nineteenth century more broadly.

Book A Plea for Ragged Schools

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Plea for Ragged Schools: Or Prevention Better Than Cure "Can hope look forward to a manhood raised On such foundations?" "'Hope is none for him!' The pale recluse indignantly exclaimed; 'And tens of thousands suffer wrongs as deep.' "At this day Who shall enumerate the crazy huts And tottering hovels, whence do issue forth A ragged offspring, with thin upright hair, Crowned like the image of fantastic Fear; Or wearing (shall we say?) in that white growth An ill-adjusted turban, for defence Or fierceness, wreathed around their sun-burnt brows By savage Nature? Shrivelled are their lips; Naked, and coloured like the soil, the feet On which they stand, as if thereby they drew Some nourishment, as trees do by their roots, From earth, the common mother of us all. Figure and mien, complexion and attire, Are leagued to strike dismay; but outstretched hand And whining voice denote them suppliants For the least boon that pity can bestow." Wordsworth. Book The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists

Download or read book The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists written by Robert Tressell and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 1962 with total page 639 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a classic representation of the impoverished and politically powerless underclass of British society in Edwardian England, ruthlessly exploited by the institutionalized corruption of their employers and the civic and religious authorities. Epic in scale, the novel charts the ruinous effects of the laissez-faire mercantilist ethics on the men, women, and children of the working classes, and through its emblematic characters, argues for a socialist politics as the only hope for a civilized and humane life for all. It is a timeless work whose political message is as relevant today as it was in Tressell's time. For this it has long been honoured by the Trade Union movement and thinkers across the political spectrum.

Book The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists

Download or read book The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists written by Robert Tressell and published by Paperbackshop.CompanyUK Limited - Echo Library. This book was released on 1925 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tressell's novel is about survival on the underside of the Edwardian Twilight, about exploitative employment when the only safety nets are charity, workhouse, and grave. Following the fortunes of a group of painters and decorators and their families, and the attempts to rouse their politicalwill by the Socialist visionary Frank Owen, the book is both a highly entertaining story and a passionate appeal for a fairer way of life. It asks questions that are still being asked today: why do your wages bear no relation to the value of your work? Why do fat cats get richer when you don't?Tressell's answers are "The Great Money Trick" and the "philanthropy" of an unenlightened workforce, who give away their rights and aspirations to a decent life so freely.Intellectually enlightening, deeply moving and gloriously funny (complete with exploding clergyman), The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists is a book that changes lives.
