Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Second International Workshop on Mobile Entity Localization and Tracking in GPS-less Environments (MELT 2009), held in Orlando, Florida on September 30, 2009 in conjunction with the 11th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing (Ubicomp 2009). MELT provides a forum for the presentation of state-of-the-art technologies in mobile localization and tracking and novel applications of location-based s- vices. MELT 2009 continued the success of the ?rst workshop in the series (MELT 2008), which was held is San Francisco, California on September 19, 2008 in conjunction with Mobicom. Location-awareness is a key component for achieving context-awareness. - cent years have witnessed an increasing trend towards location-based services and applications. In most cases, however, location information is limited by the accessibility to GPS, which is unavailable for indoor or underground fac- ities and unreliable in urban environments. Much research has been done, in both the sensor network community and the ubiquitous computing community, to provide techniques for localization and tracking in GPS-less environments. Novel applications based on ad-hoc localization and real-time tracking of - bile entities are growing as a result of these technologies. MELT brings together leaders from both the academic and industrial research communities to discuss challenging and open problems, to evaluate pros and cons of various approaches, to bridge the gap between theory and applications, and to envision new research opportunities.

Book excerpt: Wireless sensor networks have received considerable attention for their potential as a cheap, easily deployed, distributed monitoring tool. Recently, researchers have begun to investigate the use of wireless sensor networks to drive closed-loop control systems. However, such composite systems are nontrivial to design due to the system interface dichotomy: control systems typically assume periodic, high frequency sensor updates whereas sensor networks provide a periodic, low frequency, and laggy sensor updates. Utilizing robot navigation and pursuit-evasion games as benchmarks, our research focuses on improving control system performance by exploiting the properties of wireless sensor networks. We developed and deployed a real-world, medium-scale wireless sensor network for playing pursuit-evasion games. Using our experience from this deployment, we highlight the difficulties in using sensor network data to accurately localize robots. Several techniques designed to compensate for such difficulties are developed and incorporated into an unified system architecture. To test our architecture, an application-level simulator, accounting for many of the sensor network characteristics that frustrate control design, is developed. This simulator allows us to identify components of our system architecture that can improve the performance of control systems operating in networks of sensors. Amongst the components, intelligent path planning is identified as uniquely important in improving robot localization accuracy during navigation. Path planning techniques that use information maps, exploiting the knowledge of node topology and sensor models, are developed. Information is a metric for measuring the ability of a region in the environment to aid in robot localization.

Book Algorithm Design and Error Analysis of Quantized RSSI Based Localization in Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Algorithm Design and Error Analysis of Quantized RSSI Based Localization in Wireless Sensor Networks written by Xiaoli Li and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wireless Sensor Network localization is an important aspect in sensor network applications such as tracking and monitoring. The general goal of localization is to obtain the best position estimation of each node under the constraints of the deploying cost, the capability of a sensor node platform, and the properties of the deploying environment. The purpose of this research is to investigate new algorithms and analyze the characteristics of their localization error in sensor network localization. In this dissertation, a new received signal strength (RSS) based algorithm RangeQ is presented. The simulation results show that the partial- range-aware algorithm can improve the localization accuracy by reducing position errors up to 50% of the previous range-free localization results. Based on the above algorithm, the Cramer-Rao lower bound (CRLB) has been derived for the localization problem. Simulation results show that RangeQ outperforms two range- free algorithms. A new anchor placement algorithm for optimal or near-optimal CRLB result is also presented.

Book Simultaneous Localization and Tracking in Wireless Ad hoc Sensor Networks

Download or read book Simultaneous Localization and Tracking in Wireless Ad hoc Sensor Networks written by Christopher Jorgen Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis we present LaSLAT, a sensor network algorithm that uses range measurements between sensors and a moving target to simultaneously localize the sensors, calibrate sensing hardware, and recover the target's trajectory. LaSLAT is based on a Bayesian filter that updates a probability distribution over the parameters of interest as measurements arrive. The algorithm is distributable and requires a fixed amount of storage space with respect to the number of measurements it has incorporated. LaSLAT is easy to adapt to new types of hardware and new physical environments due to its use of intuitive probability distributions: one adaptation demonstrated in this thesis uses a mixture measurement model to detect and compensate for bad acoustic range measurements due to echoes. We present results from a centralized implementation of LaSLAT using a network of Cricket sensors. In both 2D and 3D networks, LaSLAT is able to localize sensors to within several centimeters of their ground truth positions while recovering a range measurement bias for each sensor and the complete trajectory of the mobile.

Book Tracking Mobile Targets Through Wireless Sensor Networks

Download or read book Tracking Mobile Targets Through Wireless Sensor Networks written by Tareq Alhmiedat and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-05 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, advances in signal processing have led to small, low power, inexpensive Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). Target localisation and tracking problems in WSNs have received considerable attention recently, driven by the necessity to achieve higher localisation accuracy, lower cost, and the smallest form factor. This book includes five studies. The first study leads to the design and implementation of a triangulation-based localisation approach using RSS technique for indoor tracking applications. The second study concentrates on investigating a fingerprinting localisation method for indoor tracking applications. The third study focuses on designing and implementing a decentralised tracking approach for tracking multiple mobile targets with low resource requirements. The fourth study focuses on developing and designing a practical ZigBee-based tracking approach. The fifth study outlines designing and implementing an energy-efficient approach for tracking applications.

Book Localization in Wireless Networks

Download or read book Localization in Wireless Networks written by Jessica Feng Sanford and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-03 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a computational tour-de-force, this volume wipes away a host of problems related to location discovery in wireless ad-hoc sensor networks. WASNs have recognized potential in many applications that are location-dependent, yet are heavily constrained by factors such as cost and energy consumption. Their “ad-hoc” nature, with direct rather than mediated connections between a network of wireless devices, adds another layer of difficulty. Basing this work entirely on data-driven, coordinated algorithms, the author’s aim is to present location discovery techniques that are highly accurate—and which fit user criteria. The research deploys nonparametric statistical methods and relies on the concept of joint probability to construct error (including location error) models and environmental field models. It also addresses system issues such as the broadcast and scheduling of the beacon. Reporting an impressive accuracy gain of almost 17 percent, and organized in a clear, sequential manner, this book represents a stride forward in wireless localization.
