Book excerpt: “A definitive guide to astronomy’s hottest field.” —The Economist Since its formation nearly five billion years ago, our planet has been the sole living world in a vast and silent universe. But over the past two decades, astronomers have discovered thousands of “exoplanets,” including some that could be similar to our own world, and the pace of discovery is accelerating. In a fascinating account of this unfolding revolution, Lee Billings draws on interviews with the world’s top experts in the search for life beyond earth. He reveals how the search for exoplanets is not only a scientific challenge, but also a reflection of our culture’s timeless hopes, dreams, and fears.

Book excerpt: “Might be just the book to bring out your inner astronomer . . . over 250 pages of breathtaking images from the past 50 years of NASA’s space exploration.” —Parade Preface by Bill Nye This magnificent volume offers a rich visual tour of the planets in our solar system. More than two-hundred breathtaking photographs from the archives of NASA are paired with extended captions detailing the science behind some of our cosmic neighborhood’s most extraordinary phenomena. Images of newly discovered areas of Jupiter, fiery volcanoes on Venus, and many more reveal the astronomical marvels of space in engrossing detail. Anyone with an interest in science, astronomy, and the mysteries of the universe will delight in this awe-inspiring guide to the wonders of the solar system. “As you turn through the pages, you’re hit with true moments of awe, photos that remind you the power of nature extends beyond our own planet.” —Houston Chronicle “Breathtaking pictures show the otherworldly magic of the solar system . . . The images are at once humbling and uplifting: Here in the black void of space is Saturn’s frozen moon, Mimas, white and pitted like a galactic golf ball; here is the tiny golden orb called Io, casting a shadow in a perfect inky circle on the marbled surface of Jupiter; here is the great sun, flames spurting from its surface like plumes.” —The Wall Street Journal “[A] gorgeous photographic tour of space . . . The collection is a remarkable reminder of how much has been learned about the planets over the past few decades, solving many mysteries yet introducing many more.” —Publishers Weekly

Book The Planets Are Very Very Very Far Away A Journey Through the Amazing Scale of the Solar System

Download or read book The Planets Are Very Very Very Far Away A Journey Through the Amazing Scale of the Solar System written by Mike Vago and published by The Experiment, LLC. This book was released on 2024-02-27 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The solar system unfolds before your eyes in this cheeky, myth-busting book (grounded in real math)! Quick: Picture the solar system. Do you see nine planets on tidy rings around the Sun? Then you have been lied to! It’s not without reason: We have to draw the solar system that way to fit it on a place mat, or a lunch box, or into an ordinary book. But that familiar diagram is wrong about almost everything—and so this is no ordinary book. Seven double-gatefold pages open out not once but twice, capturing our planetary neighbors at scale. At a 100,000,000,000-to-1 scale, the Sun is about the size of a dime. And five feet away from the Sun, we find . . . Earth, the size of a pinhead. A hundred-billion-to-one scale is not nearly small enough to fit our solar system into a book (or onto a soccer field)! How small do we need to go? Unfold the next three spreads to find out . . .

Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to demonstrate to a wider audience, as well as to a more skilled audience, the many fascinating aspects of modern celestial mechanics. It sets out to do this without the use of mathematics. After giving the reader the technical tools needed for a basic understanding of the underlying physical phenomena (using only elementary mathematics), facts and figures are provided on historical events, modern discoveries and future applications. Contents are divided into major topics where the three "souls" of modern celestial mechanics (dynamical systems, Solar System and stellar systems, spaceflight dynamics) play a major role.

Book The Babylonian Theory of the Planets

Download or read book The Babylonian Theory of the Planets written by N. M. Swerdlow and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second millennium b.c., Babylonian scribes assembled a vast collection of astrological omens, believed to be signs from the gods concerning the kingdom's political, military, and agricultural fortunes. The importance of these omens was such that from the eighth or seventh until the first century, the scribes observed the heavens nightly and recorded the dates and locations of ominous phenomena of the moon and planets in relation to stars and constellations. The observations were arranged in monthly reports along with notable events and prices of agricultural commodities, the object being to find correlations between phenomena in the heavens and conditions on earth. These collections of omens and observations form the first empirical science of antiquity and were the basis of the first mathematical science, astronomy. For it was discovered that planetary phenomena, although irregular and sometimes concealed by bad weather, recur in limited periods within cycles in which they are repeated on nearly the same dates and in nearly the same locations. N. M. Swerdlow's book is a study of the collection and observation of ominous celestial phenomena and of how intervals of time, locations by zodiacal sign, and cycles in which the phenomena recur were used to reduce them to purely arithmetical computation, thereby surmounting the greatest obstacle to observation, bad weather. The work marks a striking advance in our understanding of both the origin of scientific astronomy and the astrological divination through which the kingdoms of ancient Mesopotamia were governed.
