It consistently ranks as the first or second most serious educational problem in the eyes of the general public, and beginning teachers consistently rank it as their most pressing concern during their early teaching years. Management problems continue to be a major cause of teacher burnout and job dissatisfaction. Strangely, despite this enduring concern on the part of educators and the public, few researchers have chosen to focus on classroom management or to identify themselves with this critical field. The Handbook of Classroom Management has four primary goals: 1) to clarify the term classroom management; 2) to demonstrate to scholars and practitioners that there is a distinct body of knowledge that directly addresses teachers’ managerial tasks; 3) to bring together disparate lines of research and encourage conversations across different areas of inquiry; and 4) to promote a vigorous agenda for future research in this area. To this end, 47 chapters have been organized into 10 sections, each chapter written by a recognized expert in that area. Cutting across the sections and chapters are the following themes: *First, positive teacher-student relationships are seen as the very core of effective classroom management. *Second, classroom management is viewed as a social and moral curriculum. *Third, external reward and punishment strategies are not seen as optimal for promoting academic and social-emotional growth and self-regulated behavior. *Fourth, to create orderly, productive environments teachers must take into account student characteristics such as age, developmental level, race, ethnicity, cultural background, socioeconomic status, and ableness. Like other research handbooks, the Handbook of Classroom Management provides an indispensable reference volume for scholars, teacher educators, in-service practitioners, and the academic libraries serving these audiences. It is also appropriate for graduate courses wholly or partly devoted to the study of classroom management.

Book excerpt: In-school suspension is one of the most commonly used disciplinary procedures in schools today. It enjoys broad support from administrators, teachers, and parents and has become a favored alternative to out-of-school suspension. Despite its wide-spread use, virtually nothing is known about its effect on student behavior. Among the parameters of in-school suspension that have received little or no scientific evaluation, duration of assignment---an oft researched topic in the timeout literature---possesses particular practical, ethical, and legal implications. In this study, a within-subjects reversal design was used to compare the effects of short, 2-hour assignments to in-school suspension to more commonly used 2-day (12-hour) assignments on the classroom behavior of seven elementary school students. A visual inspection of the results revealed a reduction in participant classroom disruptive behavior and a corresponding increase in engagement immediately following in-school suspension for all participants. A small decrease in classmate disruptiveness and an accompanying increase in classmate engagement following participant suspension was also observed. Surprisingly, visual inspection of the data revealed no difference in participant or classmate behavior between in-school suspension conditions. The 12-hour condition, however, was associated with a 466% increase in lost instructional time over the 2-hour condition. Longterm behavior change was not achieved under either condition. Implications of these findings for the educational community are discussed.

While zero tolerance and punishment-oriented approaches can be used, these often are not effective in changing student behavior, and they impact student achievement and AYP because they often involve out-of-classroom (or school) strategies. Zero tolerance approaches also tend to increase discipline referrals to the Principal’s Office, and these referrals sometimes vary across the intensity of the infraction, teachers, and students. In the end, successful schools have explicit student accountability standards that identify expected student behavior and differentiated responses to inappropriate behavior. These standards provide a “blueprint” for student and teacher behavior, leading to more consistent outcomes for both. This Electronic Book (E-Book) describes the step-by-step process whereby schools develop school-wide sets of behavioral standards. Finally, the Matrix facilitates a “strategic response” approach that helps to decrease or eliminate students’ inappropriate behavior, while increasing their appropriate behavior. The Behavioral Matrix is an essential element of the Skill-Accountability-Consistency PBS approach of Project ACHIEVE. The various alternatives have been shown to improve student behavior, maintain school safety, and enhance academic achievement. The approaches fall into three categories. First are programs that seek to improve the culture within an entire school. They rely on professional development to encourage all school staff to implement positive behavioral interventions. Second are programs that teach individual professionals better skills in behavior management and student discipline. Both teachers and school resource officers are targeted by these programs that teach adolescent development and effective conflict resolution. Third are approaches that change the response of school to misbehavior by students. These approaches either replace school suspension with another type of response to misconduct or offer alternative activities to students during times of suspension. Most aim to help students avoid future misconduct. The final strategy highlighted in the report, Policies Reducing the Use of Suspension as a Discipline Tool, can complement any of the other approaches described.

Book excerpt: This book was designed to provide school districts with an alternative to school suspension of students with behavioral problems. Research has shown that schools have not implemented a plan to deal with difficult students. Often the only recourse is out-of-school suspension. This intervention focused on a Twilight School Program (TSP). The TSP assisted students who present behavioral problems during the school day program. The school administration, teachers, and parents worked together to involve students in the evening school program. The students attended school in the evening and had to meet the necessary requirements that would have been offered during the regular school day. This program was instrumental in assisting students with attendance problems. Students were recommended for placement in the TSP by the administration. Parents were sent notification letters, and they met with the administrative staff. This was an option from placing the student on out-of-school suspension. The TSP was composed of a staff of teachers, an attendance monitor, a guidance counselor, and a coordinator. Students received individual academic guidance from the school counselor. An analysis of the data showed that students who participated in the TSP had an increase in attendance and academic achievement. This intervention was used during the author's tenure as principal of an urban high school. All facts in the book are true and researched.
