Book A Plain Sailorman in China

Download or read book A Plain Sailorman in China written by Bruce Swanson and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2012-07-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Plain Sailorman in China is a biography of Cdr. Irvin Van Gorder Gillis, USN that recounts both his extraordinary family history – a fascinating slice of Americana in the 1800’s – and Irvin’s multi-faceted career as a naval officer for 25 years and then as successful rare Chinese book collector. Son of a U. S. Navy Rear Admiral, as a U.S. Naval Academy graduate in 1894 he distinguished himself academically at the Academy and soon operationally while serving aboard his first U. S. Navy warships. Assigned to a torpedo boat in the Spanish-American War, he was hailed a hero for disarming a live Spanish torpedo while it was still floating in the sea. A talented naval engineer as well as leader of men, Gillis rapidly was selected to command a series of U.S. Navy warships, initially the torpedo boat in which he served during the war. His second command, USS Annapolis, took him to Asia for the first time where he saw action in the Philippines during the insurrection there. After another tour in command of a monitor assigned to China and service in two battleships, he was assigned as Assistant U. S. Naval Attaché in Tokyo to observe the Russo-Japanese War. Following more sea duty in the Atlantic he was sent to Peking as the first U. S. Naval Attaché to China, a job he held three times over the following 12 years. Following the second of these tours, and during his first period of retirement from the Navy in 1914, he was designated as chief intelligence officer for the Navy in China – and perhaps for other government intelligence collectors as well – while simultaneously working for Bethlehem Steel Corporation and Electric Boat Company as their China representative to sell warships to the Chinese Navy. In 1917 he was recalled to active duty for his third tour as U. S. Naval Attaché to China to replace the incumbent who was reassigned to command a destroyer in World War I. Following the end of the war, Gillis was released from active duty and settled into his life as a civilian. Married to a Chinese princess – possibly with two children —he remained in China from 1914 until his death in 1948, primarily collecting, sorting, cataloguing, binding and shipping tens of thousands of volumes of rare Chinese manuscripts that ultimately were to reside in Princeton University’s East Asian Library. During World War II, he and his wife were interned at the former British Embassy in Peking, returning after to war to his old home near the Forbidden City until his death a few years later."

Book Other People s Wars

Download or read book Other People s Wars written by Brent L. Sterling and published by Georgetown University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Case studies explore how to improve military adaptation and preparedness in peacetime by investigating foreign wars Preparing for the next war at an unknown date against an undetermined opponent is a difficult undertaking with extremely high stakes. Even the most detailed exercises and wargames do not truly simulate combat and the fog of war. Thus, outside of their own combat, militaries have studied foreign wars as a valuable source of battlefield information. The effectiveness of this learning process, however, has rarely been evaluated across different periods and contexts. Through a series of in-depth case studies of the US Army, Navy, and Air Force, Brent L. Sterling creates a better understanding of the dynamics of learning from “other people’s wars,” determining what types of knowledge can be gained from foreign wars, identifying common pitfalls, and proposing solutions to maximize the benefits for doctrine, organization, training, and equipment. Other People’s Wars explores major US efforts involving direct observation missions and post-conflict investigations at key junctures for the US armed forces: the Crimean War (1854–56), Russo-Japanese War (1904–5), Spanish Civil War (1936–39), and Yom Kippur War (1973), which preceded the US Civil War, First and Second World Wars, and major army and air force reforms of the 1970s, respectively. The case studies identify learning pitfalls but also show that initiatives to learn from other nations’ wars can yield significant benefits if the right conditions are met. Sterling puts forth a process that emphasizes comprehensive qualitative learning to foster better military preparedness and adaptability.

Morrison Life Logbook is the story of the colorful life of Vance Hallam Morrison as he documents his experiences for his family and others who may be interested in his adventures, especially naval Cold War historians. Too often is “I wish they were still here to explain how these events came to pass” lamented. In this case, he formats his story into that of a ship’s deck log which those with Navy careers will find intimately familiar.

Book The China Clippers Classic Reprint

Download or read book The China Clippers Classic Reprint written by Basil Lubbock and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-25 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The China Clippers This book is an effort to preserve the records of the most perfect type of sailing ship at the very height of its development, and it has been written entirely for sailors and those who are interested in shipping. In it I have put down as simply as possible the personal history of certain ships and that in the plain language of the sea without any attempt to explain technical or seafaring terms for the benefit of the landsman. At the same time the reader must not expect to find highly-coloured descriptions of great sea adventures - the adventures are there right enough, but he who wishes to find them must search deep into the cold print of bald statements and read between the lines by the light of his own experience. The material gathered together in this book has been culled from countless abstract log books, as well as from information supplied to me, not only by the men who sailed the ships but also by their owners, designers and builders. Indeed I have to thank so many people for their help that a page of print would not contain their names, and I can only hope that this book may, perhaps, recall some pleasant sea memories and thus in some slight way recompense them for their kindness and trouble. Note - Where the word mile is used in this book, the sea-mile or 6080 feet is always meant, not the statute or land mile which is only 5280 feet.
