This book was released on 1985 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the effort by Arvin/Calspan Corporation to formulate a revision of MIL-H-8501A in terms of Mission-Oriented Flying Qualities Requirements for Military Rotorcraft. Emphasis is placed on development of a specification structure which will permit addressing Operational Missions and Flight Phases, Flight Regions, Classification of Required Operational Capability, Categorization of Flight Phases, and Levels of Flying Qualities. A number of definitions are established to permit addressing the rotorcraft state, flight envelopes, environments, and the conditions under which degraded flying qualities are permitted. Tentative requirements are drafted for Required Operational Capability Class I. Also included is a Background Information and Users Guide for the draft specification structure proposed for the MIL-H-8501A revision. The report also contains a discussion of critical data gaps and attempts to prioritize these data gaps and to suggest experiments that should be performed to generate data needed to support formulation of quantitative design criteria for the additional Operational capability Classes II, III, and IV.
Download or read book A Mathematical Model of the UH 60 Helicopter written by K. B. Hilbert and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report documents the revisions made to a mathematical model of a single main rotor helicopter. These revisions were necessary to model the UH-60 helicopter accurately. The major modifications to the model include fuselage aerodynamic force and moment equations that are specific to the UH-60, a canted tail rotor, a horizontal stabilator with variable incidence, and a pitch bias actuator (PBA). In addition, the model requires a full set of parameters which describe the helicopter configuration and its physical characteristics.
Download or read book A Review of US Army Aircrew aircraft Integration Research Programs written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Handling qualities have historically been studied in the context of two-crew helicopters by stability and control engineers. Mission management development has been left to engineering psychologist or human factors specialists who have studied cockpit controls and displays independently. The desire of the army for a one-crew helicopter that can perform the Scout and Attack role is forcing us to integrate these disciplines and concerns. This paper reviews some recent studies and results in these disciplines, describes the need for a more unified approach to support new helicopter development, and describes a plan to develop fundamental principles needed for efficient man-machine interface design. Keywords: Stability and control; Flying qualities; Human factors. (sdw).

Download or read book Helicopter Flight Dynamics written by Gareth D. Padfield and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 856 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Book The behaviour of helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft is so complex that understanding the physical mechanisms at work in trim, stability and response, and thus the prediction of Flying Qualities, requires a framework of analytical and numerical modelling and simulation. Good Flying Qualities are vital for ensuring that mission performance is achievable with safety and, in the first and second editions of Helicopter Flight Dynamics, a comprehensive treatment of design criteria was presented, relating to both normal and degraded Flying Qualities. Fully embracing the consequences of Degraded Flying Qualities during the design phase will contribute positively to safety. In this third edition, two new Chapters are included. Chapter 9 takes the reader on a journey from the origins of the story of Flying Qualities, tracing key contributions to the developing maturity and to the current position. Chapter 10 provides a comprehensive treatment of the Flight Dynamics of tiltrotor aircraft; informed by research activities and the limited data on operational aircraft. Many of the unique behavioural characteristics of tiltrotors are revealed for the first time in this book. The accurate prediction and assessment of Flying Qualities draws on the modelling and simulation discipline on the one hand and testing practice on the other. Checking predictions in flight requires clearly defined mission tasks, derived from realistic performance requirements. High fidelity simulations also form the basis for the design of stability and control augmentation systems, essential for conferring Level 1 Flying Qualities. The integrated description of flight dynamic modelling, simulation and flying qualities of rotorcraft forms the subject of this book, which will be of interest to engineers practising and honing their skills in research laboratories, academia and manufacturing industries, test pilots and flight test engineers, and as a reference for graduate and postgraduate students in aerospace engineering.

Download or read book Stick and Feel System Design written by J. C. Gibson and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the earliest days of manned flight, designers have to sought to assist the pilot in the performance of tasks by using stick and feel systems to bring these tasks within the bounds of human physical capabilities. This volume describes stick and feel systems in two parts. Part one describes the technologies which have been developed throughout the history of 20th Century aviation. Part two describes how modern systems dynamics interact with the human pilot. It is hoped that the design lessons and approaches outlined in this volume will contribute to a better understanding and appreciation of the importance of force-feel system design in aircraft/rotorcraft flight control.
