Book Discards in the World s Marine Fisheries

Download or read book Discards in the World s Marine Fisheries written by Kieran Kelleher and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication gives an updated review of the quantity of discards in the world's marine fisheries, using information from a broad range of fisheries in all continents. A number of policy issues are discussed including a 'no discards' approach to fisheries management, the need for balance between bycatch reduction and bycatch utilisation initiatives, and concerns arising from incidental catches of marine mammals, birds and reptiles. The report also highlights the need for more robust methods of estimating discards, and the development of bycatch management plans.

Book Pilot Study to Test the Effectiveness of Electronic Monitoring in Canterbury Fisheries

Download or read book Pilot Study to Test the Effectiveness of Electronic Monitoring in Canterbury Fisheries written by Howard Ingram McElderry and published by . This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pilot study to test the use of electronic monitoring (EM) systems to examine interactions between protected species and fishing gear was conducted in the Canterbury coast, New Zealand, inshore set net and trawl fisheries between October 2003 and January 2004. The EM systems, consisting of two closed circuit television cameras, a GPS receiver, hydraulic and winch sensors, and on-board data storage, were deployed on one trawl and four set net vessels. The EM systems operated very reliably for the inshore set net and trawl fleet. Although there was a post-fishing trip data loss of 14% of the retrieval imagery, 85 set net events were available for analysis. Detailed catch enumeration of 46 events distinguished over 99% of the catch (c. 11,000 pieces) among 22 species or groups of morphologically similar species. A second analysis method was used on the balance of recorded set net events, examining imagery for protected species. This method required about a third of the time required for the detailed catch enumeration method and was successful in detecting two Hector's dolphin (Cephalorhynchus hectori hectori) entanglements. The study demonstrated that EM systems could effectively monitor retrieval operations and encounters with protected and endangered species in the set net fishery. Minor technical improvements to the EM system could include a more forward-directed camera field of view, and lengthening of the record time to increase image capture when retrieval stops for a period of time. In the trialled monitoring application, EM offered a number of advantages over observer programmes, including logistical efficiency, fleet suitability, and industry acceptance. Issues standing in the way of implementing an EM-based monitoring programme include expanding fleet awareness of EM programme requirements, developing local infrastructure to support an EM-based programme, and developing data-sharing agreements that specify the monitoring objectives, the information to be collected, and its use.

Book Improving Fish Stock Assessments

Download or read book Improving Fish Stock Assessments written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1998-02-27 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ocean harvests have plateaued worldwide and many important commercial stocks have been depleted. This has caused great concern among scientists, fishery managers, the fishing community, and the public. This book evaluates the major models used for estimating the size and structure of marine fish populations (stock assessments) and changes in populations over time. It demonstrates how problems that may occur in fisheries dataâ€"for example underreporting or changes in the likelihood that fish can be caught with a given type of gearâ€"can seriously degrade the quality of stock assessments. The volume makes recommendations for means to improve stock assessments and their use in fishery management.

Book Overview of mitigation measures to reduce the incidental catch of vulnerable species in fisheries

Download or read book Overview of mitigation measures to reduce the incidental catch of vulnerable species in fisheries written by Sacchi, J. and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2021-06-23 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Potentially harmful contact between fisheries and marine vulnerable species represents a global conservation issue and efforts to mitigate the negative repercussions of these interactions belong in strategies for ensuring the sustainability of fisheries. This literature review offers a survey of mitigation measures and techniques that have been developed and tested around the world, aiming to address both the incidental catch of highly mobile species – specifically, cetaceans, seabirds, sharks and rays, and sea turtles – and depredation caused by dolphins. Based on research detailed in over 300 documents, including peer-reviewed publications, reports from international organizations and papers available on the internet, most of the mitigation techniques illustrated are still under development, with only a few already adopted through legislation. The selected mitigation measures are grouped by main types of fishing gear – gillnets and trammel nets, longlines and lines, trawls, purse seines, traps and pots – and further subdivided according to which of the four main groups of vulnerable species – cetaceans, seabirds, sharks and rays, or sea turtles – they are designed to protect. Preventive and curative approaches covering both technical measures (gear modifications, strategies, as well as acoustic, visual, magnetic and chemosensory deterrents) and management measures are described.
