Book Expository Thoughts on Pilgrim s Progress Classic Reprint

Download or read book Expository Thoughts on Pilgrim s Progress Classic Reprint written by Leander M. Zimmerman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Expository Thoughts on Pilgrim's Progress All such cloaks are but as rags in the eyes of God, and man stands condemned for his sins. Sin from its very nature clothes a man with rags, both literally and spiritually. The prodigal could not travel many years in the way of sin before he was clothed in rags in the true sense of the term; and like him, many men and we men are walking our streets in rags, because they have been traveling along the paths of transgression. It costs a good bit to be a sinner, and when the money is all spent, then all that sin gives to man is rags for his body and husk for his food. The very counte nance of the sinner makes him known. Place ten good, pure, honest, upright young men or women together, and beside them place ten who are of the world, who find satisfaction in eating, drinking and being merry, and you will readily be enabled to tell who are the good, and who are the bad. The very eye, the expression will bespeak the character of each. Compare the countenances of men and women in prisons and dens of iniquity, with those of men and women in churches, and you will have many living witnesses and proofs of the wages of sin as they appear in the wicked, while the righteous show by their very countenance that they are good and pure, for they have been cleansed and clothed in white robes of righteousness; the old man is put off with his rags, and the new man put on with the robe of righteousness. Book Wanderings of a Pilgrim Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wanderings of a Pilgrim Classic Reprint written by George Barrell Cheever and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wanderings of a Pilgrim A preface is a thing of inconsistencies. Though it comes first in the Book, it is last in the Author's thoughts; the first thing with the reader, it is the last with the writer and the printer. Though it is the shortest part of the Book, it is by far the most difficult. And though it is no part of the Book, it is sometimes the only part read, and the longest remembered. It is always demanded by custom, though oftentimes wholly unnecessary. It is like a visit of ceremony, with half an ex cuse for not calling sooner, and half an apology for calling at all. It is like the title Esq., which is no part of any man's name, and yet every man writes it on a letter to his neighbour. It is like notes at the bottom of the page, which, if they contain anything important, had better be put in the body of the work. Finally, it is like standing at the door in a rain-storm, and sending in the servant to announce your name. A Preface in the present case might have been spared, inas much as there is an introductory chapter. But perhaps it may be set down as one of those graces in book-life, like the touch of your hat to a friend across the street, which softens the manners, and does not permit men to be brutes. This doubtless is the philosophy of it, though the etymology intimates that it is simply the art of putting the best face foremost. It may be questioned whether it were not better not to have published at all; but this should have been thought of before. When I first wrote, I was thinking of dear friends, just as in collecting my Alpine Flowers, and of the pleasure I would give them, if ever permitted to show them my mountain treasures. To write merely for the public is but poor business; it makes a sort of commercial traveller out of a man, who goes about like an Argus, seeing with a hundred eyes, not one of which is his own; seeing everything for the public, nothing for himself a kind of commission agent to trade with nature, and drive the best Speculations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zion's Pilgrim IT was not until that I had passed a very con siderable portion of time in the life of man, that I felt the full conviction' of my being but a stranger and a pilgrim upon the earth. And' it becomes even now, one of the most astonish ing circumstances, in the new view of things which are continually Opening before me, that there should have been so much iglnorance in my mind by nature, on a subject whic in itself, ap pears so exceedingly plain and evident. Not that I was altogether void of apprehension, that the present life formed a bounded prospect. But yet my ideas were like those of the great mass of unawakened characters, who believe as though they believed not; and who, though ready enough to confess in the general, that man is but a dying creature, yet in the particular instance, as it concerns themselves, live as though they never thought to die. For this desire on the part of the children to see a story in its natural setting, and to know what came before and what followed after, showed that they had reached the period which is a happy time for laying a strong foundation upon which to build later work; a. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pilgrims' Way: A Little Scrip of Good Counsel for Travellers It is a disease of us English, and I think a reproach to that reformed religion which most of us profess, that we no longer go on pilgrimages. We travel more furiously than ever, and our propensity for it has passed into a by-word among the nations: but we travel among phenomena, and either in that rage for sight-seeing which Matthew Arnold summarised once for all, or in pursuit of bodily, not of spiritual, health. Yet we were once a great people for pilgrimages for our spiritual health; and the roads along which we tear in motors or on bicycles intersect and sometimes follow for miles the tracks whereby the Englishman used to ride or trudge - once in his lifetime, perhaps, but for his soul's great benefit - to Canterbury, Walsingham, St. Michael's Mount. For most of us the frequented stretches of these old roads have had their significance rubbed out of them: it is where the track diverges - where the rider on his way home from the hunt crosses a ribbon of short turf winding over the downs - that the lesson is more likely to be read: and this is a pity, for it effaces by a foolish antiquarian interest what should be a present practical one. If the new road lead us better to Walsingham than the old, by all means let the old be superseded. But does the new lead to Walsingham? I want to urge here a reason or two why this good custom of our fathers, of going on pilgrimages, should not be discontinued.
