Book Ten Pieces of My Former Self

Download or read book Ten Pieces of My Former Self written by Ivy W. Harrell and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ten Pieces of My Former Self, author Ivy W. Harrell narrates a story of her journey, of childhood angst, daddy issues, and a life gone awry. But she also shares a story about the power of God and how he intervened and delivered her from the angst and waywardness. This memoir chronicles how Ivy realized she couldn’t do life on her own when an inexplicable shift in her heart brought her to her knees as she cried out to the Lord. It offers a look at the lessons she experienced, telling how she learned that when things go wrong and the weight of the wrongness wants to consume her, God will make a way of escape. She learned that reflection helps in seeing more clearly the poor decisions and thoughtless choices, some she barely lived through. She learned that her past—as unsheltered as it was—doesn’t define her. Ivy submits no regrets, only gratefulness to God for having made it through, piece by piece.

Book excerpt: This title explores the shadowy world of the short, pornographic cut-piece clips that appear in some films in Bangladesh and examines their place in South Asian film culture. It provides a portrait of the production, consumption and cinematic pleasures of stray celluloid and shines a light on Bangladesh's state-owned film industry and popular practices of the obscene. The book also reframes conceptual approaches to South Asian cinema and film culture, drawing on media anthropology to decode the cultural contradictions of Bangladesh since the 1990s.

Book The Address of the Eye

Download or read book The Address of the Eye written by Vivian Sobchack and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cinema is a sensuous object, but in our presence it becomes also a sensing, sensual, sense-making subject. Thus argues Vivian Sobchack as she challenges basic assumptions of current film theory that reduce film to an object of vision and the spectator to a victim of a deterministic cinematic apparatus. Maintaining that these premises ignore the material and cultural-historical situations of both the spectator and the film, the author makes the radical proposal that the cinematic experience depends on two "viewers" viewing: the spectator and the film, each existing as both subject and object of vision. Drawing on existential and semiotic phenomenology, and particularly on the work of Merleau-Ponty, Sobchack shows how the film experience provides empirical insight into the reversible, dialectical, and signifying nature of that embodied vision we each live daily as both "mine" and "another's." In this attempt to account for cinematic intelligibility and signification, the author explores the possibility of human choice and expressive freedom within the bounds of history and culture.

Book Imitations of the Self Jiang Yan and Chinese Poetics

Download or read book Imitations of the Self Jiang Yan and Chinese Poetics written by Nicholas Morrow Williams and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imitations of the Self reevaluates the poetry of Jiang Yan (444–505), long underappreciated because of its pervasive reliance on allusion, by emphasizing the self-conscious artistry of imitation. In context of “imitation poetry,” the popular genre of the Six Dynasties era, Jiang’s work can be seen as the culmination of central trends in Six Dynasties poetry. His own life experiences are encoded in his poetry through an array of literary impersonations, reframed in traditional literary forms that imbue them with renewed significance. A close reading of Jiang Yan’s poetry demonstrates the need to apply models of interpretation to Chinese poetry that do justice to the multiplicity of authorial self-representation.

  • Author : Heather Bamford
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press

Download or read book Cultures of the Fragment written by Heather Bamford and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The majority of medieval and sixteenth-century Iberian manuscripts, whether in Latin, Hebrew, Arabic, Spanish, or Aljamiado (Spanish written in Arabic script), contain fragments or are fragments. The term fragment is used to describe not only isolated bits of manuscript material with a damaged appearance, but also any piece of a larger text that was intended to be a fragment. Investigating the vital role these fragments played in medieval and early modern Iberian manuscript culture, Heather Bamford’s Cultures of the Fragment is focused on fragments from five major Iberian literary traditions, including Hispano-Arabic and Hispano-Hebrew poetry, Latin and Castilian epics, chivalric romances, and the literature of early modern crypto-Muslims. The author argues that while some manuscript fragments came about by accident, many were actually created on purpose and used in a number of ways, from binding materials, to anthology excerpts, and some fragments were even incorporated into sacred objects as messages of good luck. Examining four main motifs of fragmentation, including intention, physical appearance, metonymy, and performance, this work reveals the centrality of the fragment to manuscript studies, highlighting the significance of the fragment to Iberia’s multicultural and multilingual manuscript culture.
