Excerpt: ... the mind cannot conceive any thing more hushed, more sylvan, more entirely removed from the slightest evidence of proximity to a town. Nothing is audible there, except the songs of birds and the rustling of leaves. Ken. sington Gardens, beautiful as they are, have no seclusion so perfect as this. "We cannot recommend a better thing to such of our readers as have leisure, than a day spent in wandering amidst the union of stately objects and rural beauty which constitute the charm of Mary-le-bone Park." It would be tedious and uninteresting to the reader to detail the progress of the works since the period at which the previous description was written. Our next object will be, to describe the present state of the Park, with the principal Terraces and Buildings already finished, or in course of completion. We shall therefore proceed on a TOUR OF THE PARK, premising that our descriptions will be aided and illustrated by reference to the topographical Frontispiece Plan. We propose to commence our promenade from the upper end of Portland Place. This spacious street, it will be recollected, is from the designs of Messrs. Adams, the architects of the Adelphi; but the point from which we start is by Mr. Nash. The contrast affords a good idea of the great revolutions of architectural taste within a few yeajs. We first arrive at Park Crescent, and crossing the New Road, enter Park Square, on which site it was originally intended to have completed the crescent opposite into a circus, which would have been the largest circle of buildings in Europe. The square is separated from the New Road and from the Park by a spacious quadrangle, tastefully planted and disposed, and enclosed by ornamental railings, and communicating beneath the New Road with the...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serial Forms: The Unfinished Project of Modernity, 1815-1848 proposes an entirely new way of reading the transition into the modern. It is the first book in a series of three which will take the reader up to the end of the First World War, moving from a focus on London to a global perspective. Serial Forms sets out the theoretical and historical basis for all three volumes. It suggests that, as a serial news culture and a stadial historicism developed together between 1815 and 1848, seriality became the dominant form of the nineteenth century. Through serial newsprint, illustrations, performances, and shows, the past and the contemporary moment enter into public visibility together. Serial Forms argues that it is through seriality that the social is represented as increasingly politically urgent. The insistent rhythm of the serial reorganizes time, recalibrates and rescales the social, and will prepare the way for the 1848 revolutions which are the subject of the next book. By placing their work back into the messy print and performance culture from which it originally appeared, Serial Forms is able to produce new and exciting readings of familiar authors such as Scott, Byron, Dickens, and Gaskell. Rather than offering a rarefied intellectual history or chopping up the period into 'Romantic' and 'Victorian', Clare Pettitt tracks the development of communications technologies and their impact on the ways in which time, history and virtuality are imagined.

Book The Coloniality of Animal Monstrous Othering in Children s Books Films and Toys

Download or read book The Coloniality of Animal Monstrous Othering in Children s Books Films and Toys written by Donna Varga and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Coloniality of Animal Monstrous Othering in Children’s Books, Films, and Toys examines how the portrayal of animals as physically distorted, behaviorally depraved, and intellectually defective serves to justify their debasement, violation, and destruction in materials directed toward young consumers. The author argues that this animal monstrous Othering arises from the Eurocentric belief in humans’ natural superiority over animals and the right to categorize animals in accordance with a scale of worthiness that parallels the subjugation of racialized persons. The chapters examine a variety of canonical figures like the dissolute wolf of Red Riding Hood stories and the disfigured titular character of the Wonky Donkey picture book alongside non-canonical animals including reprobate pigs, degenerate sharks, self-centered flamingos, and wicked piranhas. To counter this animal debasement, Varga juxtaposes these readings with an examination of materials that articulate harmonious animal-human interrelationships without dependence on styles of anthropomorphism that diminish animality.
