Book excerpt: After making the mistake of a lifetime, Katherine Klein reminds us of how frivolous decisions in our early adult years can impact the rest of our lives. As she remained in denial about her marriage, she embarked on a dedicated journey to become a doctor and a mother. Katherine's obstacles in medical school and residency were challenging enough, but the nightmares intensified after she gained the strength and courage to leave the oppressive personal situation she lived under. Little did she know ... the aftermath of her divorce would threaten everything she worked for and held close to her heart. "A Physician's Plight is an intriguing read that shouldn't be missed for readers of personal memoirs." Midwest Book Review "This book pulls no punches - nothing is sacred, nothing is left out!" Josh Grossman, M.D., FACP, Col. (ret), U.S. Army Medical Corps "Along with her well-documented experiences in her career, relationship with her sons, and finding her footing as a mother and a wife that kept me glued, Kline grabs my emotions and forces me to be a witness to one of the most horrendously excruciating divorces and custody battles I have ever heard of, read of, or seen in my life." Book Women Aren t Supposed to Fly

Download or read book Women Aren t Supposed to Fly written by Harriet Hall and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This irreverent romp through the worlds of medicine and the military is part autobiography, part social history, and part laugh-out-loud comedy. When the author graduated from medical school in 1970, only 7% of America's doctors were women, and very few of those joined the military. She was the second woman ever to do an Air Force internship, the only woman doctor at David Grant USAF Medical Center, and the only female military doctor in Spain. She had to fight for acceptance: even the 3 year old daughter of a patient told her father, "Oh, Daddy! That¿s not a doctor, that's a lady." She was refused a radiology residency because they subtracted points for women. She couldn¿t have dependents: she was paid less than her male counterparts, she couldn't live on base, and her civilian husband was not even covered for medical care or allowed to shop on base. After spending six years as a General Medical Officer in Franco's Spain, she became a family practice specialist and a flight surgeon, doing everything from delivering babies to flying a B-52. Along the way, she found time to buy her own airplane and learn to fly it (in that order) and to have two babies of her own. She retired as a full colonel. As a rare woman in a male-dominated field, she encountered prejudice, silliness, and even frank disbelief. Her sense of humor kept her afloat; she enlivened the solemnity of her job with antics like admitting a spider to the hospital and singing "The Mickey Mouse Club March" on a field exercise. This book describes her education and career. She tells an entertaining story of what it was like to be a female doctor, flight surgeon, pilot, and military officer in a world that wasn't quite ready for her yet. The title is taken from her first cross-country solo flight: when she closed out her flight plan, the man at the desk said, "Didn't anybody ever tell you women aren't supposed to fly?"

Book No Apparent Distress A Doctor s Coming of Age on the Front Lines of American Medicine

Download or read book No Apparent Distress A Doctor s Coming of Age on the Front Lines of American Medicine written by Rachel Pearson and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brutally frank memoir about doctors and patients in a health care system that puts the poor at risk. No Apparent Distress begins with a mistake made by a white medical student that may have hastened the death of a working-class black man who sought care in a student-run clinic. Haunted by this error, the author—herself from a working-class background—delves into the stories and politics of a medical training system in which students learn on the bodies of the poor. Part confession, part family history, No Apparent Distress is at once an indictment of American health care and a deeply moving tale of one doctor’s coming-of-age.

Book A Final Arc of Sky

Download or read book A Final Arc of Sky written by Jennifer Culkin and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A critical care and emergency flight nurse, Jennifer Culkin is no stranger to death and its dramas. Her memoir plunges the reader into chaotic scenes where she struggles to keep seriously injured patients alive while wedged against the door of an Augusta 109A helicopter. She pulls us into the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit), where she works on babies born too soon, as well as into the PICU (pediatric intensive care unit), where she cares for kids seemingly too small to contain their devastating illnesses. Through these experiences, Culkin explores the overlap between her work and her private life, where her caregiving must eventually be extended to accommodate her sons, her dying mother, then her father, and finally, as she adjusts to life with multiple sclerosis, herself. In the closing chapter, Culkin writes of friends and colleagues injured or killed in helicopter crashes, calling again on her constant awareness of the fragility of life.

Book In the Shadow of a Badge

Download or read book In the Shadow of a Badge written by Lillie Leonardi and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2013 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Former law enforcement professional Lillie Leonardi has always lived with her feet planted in two separate worlds--the metaphysical and the physical. In the Shadow of a Badge, her previously self-published spiritual memoir, takes you on a dramatic journey of what happens when Leonardi's two very distinct realities become dangerously intertwined. During her work at the crash site of Flight 93 in Shanksville, Pennsylvania, surrounding the fateful events of September 11th, Leonardi is forced to confront her connection to the divine--something she has struggled with since her youth. Her gripping personal account of the 12 days she spent acting as an FBI liaison between the law enforcement and social service agencies carries you into a world that combines the factual and logistical with the angelic and mystical. After witnessing what she describes as a "field of angels" during her first minutes at the crash site, Leonardi must finally reconcile the opposing sides of her life. We walk with her through the diagnosis of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, experience the guilt and fear that grip her, and witness the remarkable transformation of her soul as she discovers that forgiveness, of self and others, can be the best remedy. As an inspiring example of what it really means to be called to service, Leonardi shows that it's never too late to find your spiritual path and life's purpose.

Book Crossings

Download or read book Crossings written by Jon Kerstetter and published by Crown. This book was released on 2018-09-04 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A searing, beautifully told memoir by a Native American doctor on the trials of being a doctor-soldier in the Iraq War, and then, after suffering a stroke that left his life irrevocably changed, his struggles to overcome the new limits of his body, mind, and identity. Every juncture in Jon Kerstetter’s life has been marked by a crossing from one world into another: from civilian to doctor to soldier; between healing and waging war; and between compassion and hatred of the enemy. When an injury led to a stroke that ended his careers as a doctor and a soldier, he faced the most difficult crossing of all, a recovery that proved as shattering as war itself. Crossings is a memoir of an improbable, powerfully drawn life, one that began in poverty on the Oneida Reservation in Wisconsin but grew by force of will to encompass a remarkable medical practice. Trained as an emergency physician, Kerstetter’s thirst for intensity led him to volunteer in war-torn Rwanda, Kosovo, and Bosnia, and to join the Army National Guard. His three tours in the Iraq War marked the height of the American struggle there. The story of his work in theater, which involved everything from saving soldiers’ lives to organizing the joint U.S.–Iraqi forensics team tasked with identifying the bodies of Saddam Hussein’s sons, is a bracing, unprecedented evocation of a doctor’s life at war. But war was only the start of Kerstetter’s struggle. The stroke he suffered upon returning from Iraq led to serious cognitive and physical disabilities. His years-long recovery, impeded by near-unbearable pain and complicated by PTSD, meant overcoming the perceived limits of his body and mind and reimagining his own capacity for renewal and change. It led him not only to writing as a vocation but to a deeper understanding of how healing means accepting a new identity, and how that acceptance must be fought for with as much tenacity as any battlefield victory.
