Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. Medical theory and practice of the 1700s developed rapidly, as is evidenced by the extensive collection, which includes descriptions of diseases, their conditions, and treatments. Book A Genealogy of Puberty Science

Download or read book A Genealogy of Puberty Science written by Pedro Pinto and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-02-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Genealogy of Puberty Science explores the modern invention of puberty as a scientific object. Drawing on Foucault’s genealogical analytic, Pinto and Macleod trace the birth of puberty science in the early 1800s and follow its expansion and shifting discursive frameworks over the course of two centuries. Offering a critical inquiry into the epistemological and political roots of our present pubertal complex, this book breaks the almost complete silence concerning puberty in critical theories and research about childhood and adolescence. Most strikingly, the book highlights the failure of ongoing medical debates on early puberty to address young people’s sexual and reproductive embodiment and citizenships. A Genealogy of Puberty Science will be of great interest to academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the fields of child and adolescent health research, critical psychology, developmental psychology, health psychology, feminist and gender studies, medical history, science and technology studies, and sexualities and reproduction studies.

Book Important European Sculpture

Download or read book Important European Sculpture written by Charles Avery and published by . This book was released on 2017-03-19 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *This richly illustrated and scholarly catalogue accompanies an exhibition at Carlton Hobbs in New York, January 2017. Among the 25 beautiful works, dating from the early Renaissance to the Neoclassical period, are important statuettes by masters such as Gianfrancesco Susini, Willem Danielsz van Tetrode, Masimiliano Soldani-Benzi, Pietro Tacca and Joseph Nollekens. This elegant catalog accompanies the latest in a series of acclaimed exhibitions by Tomasso Brothers Fine Art at Carlton Hobbs LLC in New York (19-27 January 2017). It includes works by some of the greatest European sculptors from the Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical periods - a serene polychromed stucco Madonna and Child by the workshop of Lorenzo Ghiberti (c.1378-1455) from c.1423-40, along with two polychrome glazed terracottas by Santi (1494-1576) and Benedetto Buglioni (1459-1521). There are also a number of newly discovered masterpieces in bronze, for which Tomasso Brothers are now synonymous, which include a magnificent, striding, early bronze after the antique by Willem Danielsz van Tetrode (c.1525-1580). Intriguingly, the Castiglioni Hercules and Antaeus by Pietro Tacca is conjectured to have been made to celebrate a marriage between the great houses of Medici and Della Rovere, c.1620-37. The exhibition also includes a unique 'dancing' version of the ancient Borghese Satyr by Gian Francesco Susini, a highly finished composition of Ganymede and the Eagle by Massimiliano Soldani- Benzi (1656-1740) and an extremely rare gilt-bronze relief by the enigmatic court sculptor to Charles I of England, Francesco Fanelli (1577-c.1661). Amongst the finest and most exquisite objects on show are the newly discovered terracotta roundels by John Bacon the Elder (1740-1799) after frescoes found at Pompeii, that were later translated into black basalt and white stoneware versions by Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795). Other treasures in terracotta include two works by Joseph Nollekens (1732-1823) depicting Eve bewailing the death of Abel and Lot and his Daughters, both believed to have been bought by J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) in Nollekens' posthumous sale of 1823. The carefully researched entries accompany beautiful photography and are bolstered by significant contributions from Charles Avery, Giancarlo Gentilini, Stefano Grandesso and Lorenzo Principi.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The various phases of life and their manifestations in theory and social reality constitute a well-established area of research in the fields of western medieval studies and ancient history. In this respect the Byzantine East has been widely neglected. This volume will focus on the Byzantine experience of adolescence, which may be defined as the biological transition from childhood to adulthood as well as the social and psychological experience of leaving the care of parents, guardians and family groups and the gradual integration into adult society. The contributions gathered therein treat seven subtopics that correspond to crucial questions in the current research on adolescence: the legal status of adolescents; the mechanisms of transition from childhood to adolescence; the socialisation and gradual integration into adult society; adolescents in Byzantine art; psychological aspects of adolescence from medieval to modern times; illnesses of adolescents; adolescents in the western medieval world. The focus is on the Middle and Late Byzantine Period, where historical, hagiographical, legal and medical sources offer rich material for an investigation of these aspects. The book contributes to a better understanding of all these questions and to show future trajectories for research.
