Book Meaning Context and Methodology

Download or read book Meaning Context and Methodology written by Sarah-Jane Conrad and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What methodological impact does Contextualism have on the philosophy of language? This collection sets out to provide some answers. The authors in this volume question three ultimately connected assumptions of the philosophy of language. The first assumption relates to the predominant status of referential semantics and its power to explain truth-conditional meaning. This assumption has come under attack by the context thesis and a number of papers pursue the question of whether this is justified. The second assumption gives priority to assertive sentences when considering language use. The context thesis changes our understanding of language use altogether; possible implications from this methodological shift are addressed in this volume. According to the third assumption, philosophical analysis amounts to nothing more than conceptual analysis. The context thesis risks undermining this project. Whether conceptual analysis can still be defended as a methodological tool is discussed in this volume.

Book Revival A Modern Introduction to Logic 1950

Download or read book Revival A Modern Introduction to Logic 1950 written by Lizzie Susan Stebbing and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the author of this volume states, "the science of logic does not stand still." This book was intended to cover the advances made in the study of logic in the first half of the nineteenth century, during which time the author felt there to have been greater advances made than in the whole of the preceding period from the time of Aristotle. Advances which, in her eyes, were not present in contemporary text books. As such, this book offers a valuable insight into the progress of the subject, tracing this frenetic period in its development with a first-hand awareness of its documentary value.

Book Fissures in EU Citizenship

    Book Details:
  • Author : Martin Steinfeld
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2022-01-06
  • ISBN : 1108861717
  • Pages : 413 pages

Download or read book Fissures in EU Citizenship written by Martin Steinfeld and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-06 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that core concepts in EU citizenship law are riddled with latent fissures traceable back to the earliest case law on free movement of persons, and that later developments simply compounded such defects. By looking at these defects, not only could Brexit have been predicted, but it could also have been foreseen that unchecked problems with EU citizenship would potentially lead to its eventual dismantling during an era of widespread populism and considerable challenges to further integration. Using a critical constructivist approach, the author painstakingly outlines the 'temple' of citizenship from its foundations upwards, and offers a deconstruction of concepts such as 'worker', the role of non-economic actors, the principle of equal treatment, and utterances of citizenship. In identifying inherent fissures in the concept of solidarity and post national identification, this book poses critical questions and argues that we need to reconstruct EU citizenship from the bottom up.
