Book Determination of Stress Intensity Factor Distributions for Interface Cracks in Incompressible Dissimilar Materials

Download or read book Determination of Stress Intensity Factor Distributions for Interface Cracks in Incompressible Dissimilar Materials written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-02 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study was undertaken in order to develop test methods and procedures for measuring the variation of the stress intensity factor through the thickness in bimaterial specimens containing cracks within and parallel to the bond line using the frozen stress photoelastic method. Since stress freezing materials are incompressible above critical temperature, and since thick plates are to be employed which tend to produce a state of plane strain near the crack tip, the interface near tip fracture equations reduce to the classic form for homogeneous materials. Moreover, zero thickness interfaces do not exist when materials are bonded together. It was decided early on that it would be important to insure a uniform straight and accurate crack tip region through the thickness of the body to reduce scatter in the SIF distribution through the thickness. It was also observed that rubberlike materials which were desired to be modeled exhibited significant tip blunting prior to crack extension and that some blunting of the tip would provide a more realistic model. It should be noted that, in normal stress freezing photoelastic work, it is considered good practice to avoid utilizing data near bond lines in photoelastic models due to the bond line stresses which inevitably develop when two parts are bonded together. Thus, the present study involves certain exploratory aspects in deviating from standard practice in stress freezing work. With the above ideas in mind, several different test methods were investigated and are described in the following sections and appendices. The geometry selected for the program was a thick, edge cracked specimen containing a bond line. Smith, C. W. Langley Research Center NAG1-1622...

Book Experimental Determination of the Dependence of Crack Extension Force on Crack Length for a Single edge notch Tension Specimen

Download or read book Experimental Determination of the Dependence of Crack Extension Force on Crack Length for a Single edge notch Tension Specimen written by John E. Srawley and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The single-edge-notch form of a plane-strain (or opening mode) crack toughness specimen is particularly economical in regard to available test material and testing machine capacity. The necessary calibration relation for a particular design of a single-edge-notch specimen centrally loaded in tension, was determined from a series of compliance measurements at crack lengths ranging from zero to one-half the specimen width. The accuracy of the calibration is estimated to be +1/2 percent in the range of interest. Agreement with concurrent results obtained by boundary collocation of an appropriate stress function is excellent. Alternative types of specimen are discussed, and the relation between necessary specimen size and the ratio of toughness to yield strength is emphasized.

Book The Short Single Edge Crack Specimen with Linearly Varying End Displacements

Download or read book The Short Single Edge Crack Specimen with Linearly Varying End Displacements written by Joseph M. BLOOM and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stress intensity factors for single edge cracks in square sheets with prescribed linearly varying end displacements are investigated. The stress distribution around the crack tip is reduced to the solution of a Riemann-Hilbert problem. Numerical results are presented for several crack lengths in a square sheet. (Author).

Book Stress Intensity Magnification for Deep Surface Cracks in Sheets and Plates

Download or read book Stress Intensity Magnification for Deep Surface Cracks in Sheets and Plates written by Robert B. Anderson and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irwin stress intensity factor for surface cracks with crack depths less than half the plate thickness is extended to cases of relatively deep cracks by including the effect of the free surface opposite the crack. The stress intensity magnification factor is given as a function of applied load, crack length, crack depth, sheet thickness, yield strength, and Poisson's ratio. The combinations of these variables for which the plastic zone extends completely through the thickness a r e also predicted. The range of applicability of the analysis to surface-crack specimen data was investigated in terms of crack-depth-to-specimen-thickness ratio and crack depth-to-length ratio.
