Book A Study of Sino Korean Phonology

Download or read book A Study of Sino Korean Phonology written by Youyong Qian and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-22 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term Sino-Korean may refer to either the phonological system or vocabulary in Korean that is of Chinese origin. Along with the borrowing of Chinese characters, the Chinese readings of characters must also have been transmitted into Korean. A Study of Sino-Korean Phonology aims to contribute to the field of Sino-Korean phonology by re-examining the origin and layers of Sino-Korean pronunciations from a loanword phonology perspective. The central issues of this book include an ongoing discussion on the questions of which Chinese dialect Sino-Korean is based on and how the source form in Chinese was adapted into Korean. Last is an in-depth analysis of the layers of Sino-Korean.

Book A Study on the Origin of Modern Sino Korean

Download or read book A Study on the Origin of Modern Sino Korean written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study aims to examine the origin of Modern Sino-Korean, namely the pronunciation system of Chinese characters in the present day Korean. In order to have a better understanding of the adaptation strategy in SK, we introduced the theory of loanword phonology and conducted a case study on the Mandarin loanwords in Modern Korean in Chapter 2. The result of this case study shows that both the perception and phonology of the borrowing language play a role in the process of adaptation. Furthermore, different borrowers may adopt different adaptation strategies in the process of borrowing, including different constraints and different rankings of the same constraints. In Chapter 3, 4 and 5 we examined the initials, rhymes and tones in Hunmong jahoe (1527), the earliest Hangul notated character dictionary in Korea. The SK system presented in this book provides the following valuable hints regarding the origin of Modern SK. (1) The labial-dental fei initial group has not occurred. (2) The yun initial is separated from the xia initial. (3) The zhi initial group has not become affricative or fricative. (4) The chan initial and the chuan initial belong to the same category. (5) The ri initial has lost its nasality. (6) Chongyun (double rhymes) are distinguished in some pairs of rhymes. (7) Fourth division rhymes have -j glide. (8) The distinction of Middle Chinese -p, -t and -k codas are preserved. In order to identify the time and place that Modern SK borrowed from Chinese, we compared these eight features with the phonological system in different works of Chinese. The comparison shows that the mainstream SK is a reflection of Chinese later than Xuanying's (?-661) Yiqie jing yinyi (c. 650) (abbr. XYYY) but earlier than Huilin's (737-820) Yiqie jing yinyi (810) (abbr. HLYY). Given the fact that the fanqie in XYYY and HLYY is based on the pronunciation of the Chang'an dialect, this study concludes that the matrix of Modern SK is borrowed from the Chang'an dialect between 650 AD and 810 AD.

Book LOANWORD PHONOLOGY

Download or read book LOANWORD PHONOLOGY written by YANG HUI and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2020-07-06 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to explore which factors and to what extent these factors affect loanword phonology by conducting acoustic experiments and corpus studies. Two typologically different languages, Mandarin Chinese and Korean (spoken by Seoul Korean and Korean Chinese in Northern part of China), are recruited into the research to propose more scientific and more comprehensive generalizations for loanword phonology. First, this book determines the acoustic properties of Korean dialects. Then, corpus studies are conducted to compute which cues exert influence in the adaptation process. The results argue that distinctive features or primary acoustic cues of the borrowing languages greatly affect the process in loanword phonology synchronically. Further, this book explores the role of other influential factors such as frequency on shaping the adaptation process diachronically. Frequency is attested as an important factor in systematizing the perceptual adaptation into phonological adaptation. A cross-linguistic study provides not only the synchronic evidence of phonetic approximation in loanword adaptation but also diachronic support of the systematization of loanword phonology. This book makes contributions to research methodologies of acoustic experiments across languages and sheds light on the understanding of the complexity of loanword phonology synchronically and diachronically.

Book Adoption of Aspiration Feature in Sino Korean Phonology

Download or read book Adoption of Aspiration Feature in Sino Korean Phonology written by Sun-Mi Kim and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation examines the adoption of aspiration feature in Sino-Korean character readings. In broad usage, the term Sino-Korean refers to Chinese loanwords in Korean, but in this dissertation, it is used for a phonological system of Chinese-character readings (or pronunciation) derived from Middle Chinese. Although most sound correspondences between Sino-Korean and Middle Chinese are quite regular, some phonological features of Middle Chinese have been adopted irregularly into Sino-Korean, and Sino-Korean (SK) readings with aspiration discrepancy are part of this broader phenomenon of irregular SK readings. It is generally assumed that both the Chinese and Korean languages had voiceless aspirated stops and voiceless unaspirated stops at the time Chinese characters were adopted in the Korean peninsula. If that is indeed the case, a regular correspondence between Middle Chinese (MC) and SK is expected between the two languages. However, there are many cases where the aspiration feature shows irregular correspondence. Some SK readings with an unaspirated initial in their MC counterpart have an aspirated initial, while other SK readings with an aspirated initial in their MC counterpart have an unaspirated initial. Based on data from Korean annotations of Chinese texts and Korean Chinese-character rhyme books, previous researchers (Kōno, 1968; Itō, 2007) have identified analogy and syllabic inclination as two possible factors influencing the aspiration feature in SK. The analogy hypothesis is that the reading of the phonetic component of certain "frequent" characters is applied by analogy to other characters that share the same component. The syllabic inclination hypothesis is concerned with the tendency that irregular aspiration appears only in certain syllable shapes. In this dissertation, I discuss problems with the previous research and suggest an improved account of aspiration mismatch. After a thorough quantitative analysis of data, I propose hyperforeignization as an important cause for the aspiration mismatch in SK borrowings. Hyperforeignization is a process in which speakers create a form by adding a feature they perceive as foreign to a borrowed foreign word, even when that feature is not present in the original pronunciation. In my examination, I focus on what role hyperforeignization played in creating irregular SK pronunciations and its possible connections to the phenomenon of syllabic inclination. Because of the special historical context in which the written characters were main medium of borrowing in the case of SK loanwords, orthographic interference had a more significant influence compared to most other scenarios of loanword adaptation. It is probably not a single factor that is responsible for irregular SK readings, and any serious linguistic analysis must be complemented by social and cultural factors. This dissertation contributes to the field by showing how such factors may have played a role in the creation and transmission of irregular loanword readings.
